Seven manufacturers

Shredder Brands

Every machine on this site is made by one of seven manufacturers. None of them is best at everything, and the differences between them matter less than the difference between machine sizes — so work out the size and the security level first, then choose the brand. What follows is what actually separates the seven, including who each one is wrong for.

A DIN level is not a government approval. DIN 66399 classifies the particle: P-4 is 160 mm² or smaller, P-5 is 30 mm², P-6 is 10 mm² and P-7 — the end of the scale, there is no P-8 — is 5 mm². NSA/CSS 02-01 is separate: it requires a 1 x 5 mm particle and that the specific model appears on the current Evaluated Products List. Several brands here reach P-7; that on its own does not make a machine NSA approved. Check the model against the EPL before ordering for classified work.

Authorized dealer

Shredder Master is an authorized dealer for every brand we carry — HSM, Kobra, Dahle, MBM Destroyit, intimus, ACCO/GBC and Fellowes. Machines are new stock supplied through the manufacturer's authorized channel, and carry the manufacturer's own warranty on the terms published for that model.

The seven, compared

Origin, how deep the range goes, what each one is genuinely good at, and where each one runs out of road.

Listings and links are read live from each brand collection. DIN levels and prices cover the models carrying a DIN 66399 P (paper) rating — hard-drive, optical and electronic-media destroyers are rated on the H, O and E classes instead and are not counted in the price band, nor are bags, oil and spare parts. Computed 2026-08-12.
Brand Made in Listings DIN P levels Machine prices Strongest at Where it runs out
HSM Germany 266 P-1 P-2 P-3 P-4 P-5 P-6 P-7 $96 – $54,311
median $1,672
Range and documentation. The only brand here that covers desk-side machines and industrial shredder-balers. The lifetime cutting-roller warranty stops short of the high-security models, and US electrical configuration is confirmed per order.
Kobra Italy 70 P-1 P-2 P-3 P-4 P-5 P-6 P-7 $315 – $22,563
median $1,498
Sustained running. Explicit 24-hour continuous-duty ratings on named models, and the highest sheet capacity per price tier. The thinnest published data of the three mainstream brands, and no headline cutting-cylinder warranty from Elcoman.
Dahle Germany 60 P-3 P-4 P-5 P-6 P-7 $148 – $26,990
median $2,406
Occupied offices. Oil-free cutting heads and CleanTEC fine-dust filtration. Nothing below P-3 in this range, and no entry-level price point.
MBM Destroyit Germany 46 P-2 P-3 P-4 P-5 P-7 $330 – $53,350
median $3,241
Standardising sites. One 4000-series chassis, four security levels, one set of consumables. Lowest sheet capacity at P-4 of the three mainstream brands, heaviest at that tier, and the 4005 wants a dedicated 20-amp line.
intimus Germany 43 P-2 P-3 P-4 P-5 P-7 $299 – $43,775
median $2,103
The two extremes. P-7 office machines at 0.8 x 4.5 mm, and 220 V three-phase industrial plant. A thin middle. Little between the CP7 office machines and the three-phase plant.
ACCO — GBC and Swingline Not published 37 P-3 P-4 P-5 P-7 $143 – $8,040
median $746
Auto-feed and public-sector procurement. AutoFeed+ trays to 750 sheets; TAA-compliant CHS models. No industrial tier, and manual-slot capacity is far below the tray figure.
Fellowes United States 20 P-4 P-5 P-7 $159 – $2,892
median $439
Getting started. The lowest median machine price of the seven, built to be forgiving. No industrial duty rating anywhere in the range. Not a machine for a shared floor.

HSM 266 listings

Germany · sold in the US by HSM of America

A German manufacturer, sold in the United States through HSM of America, and by a wide margin the deepest range on this site. SECURIO is the office line — C-series desk-side, B-series floor-standing and AF auto-feed machines; Powerline covers industrial shredders and the shredder-baler combinations; ProfiPack turns used cardboard into packaging padding. The same chassis is offered at several cut sizes, so the security level is a separate decision from the machine: a B24 exists at P-2, P-4, P-5 and P-6, with sheet capacity falling from 12–14 to 6 as the particle gets finer.

HSM also publishes the most complete technical data of the brands here, which is what makes it the easiest to attach to a tender.

Less suited to Buyers assuming the headline warranty covers everything. HSM's lifetime cutting-roller warranty explicitly excludes its 0.78 x 11 mm and 1 x 5 mm high-security models. The office machines are also specified for 220–240 V on HSM's European data, so US electrical configuration is confirmed per order rather than assumed. And HSM does not publish shred speed in ft/min for the SECURIO line, which makes throughput comparisons harder than they should be.

Kobra 70 listings

Italy · Elcoman srl, Bovisio Masciago

Made in Italy by Elcoman srl of Bovisio Masciago. The distinguishing engineering decision is the motor: Kobra machines are built around continuous-duty motors rather than the duty-cycle-limited motors common at similar prices, and Elcoman publishes explicit model-by-model statements — the 430 TS C4 AO is described as a 24-hour continuous-duty motor with no cool-down period. Kobra also leads on sheet capacity at comparable price tiers, and its range spans the entire DIN paper scale, P-1 to P-7, from a notably compact catalogue: only HSM covers as many levels here, and it needs several times the listings to do it. If one manufacturer has to answer both a shared-office P-4 requirement and a P-7 high-security one, Kobra reaches both ends of the scale from a range small enough to hold in your head.

Sheet capacity across the range is honest rather than flattering, which is worth knowing when comparing on paper: a Kobra rated 15 sheets and a rival rated 20 may behave the same in daily use.

Less suited to Procurement that needs everything in writing up front. Elcoman does not publish a headline cutting-cylinder warranty, does not publish duty-cycle statements for every model, and does not publish the screen apertures that set the Cyclone's security level. Get the warranty terms in writing before ordering. US dealer and service density is also lower than HSM's, and the price of continuous duty is usually weight and cost rather than throughput.

Dahle 60 listings

Germany

A German manufacturer whose range is built around two things that matter when the machine lives among desks rather than in a copy room: oil-free operation and dust control. Much of the range uses a cutting head designed to run without lubrication, which removes the maintenance step most offices skip. The CleanTEC line adds a fine dust filter — Dahle rates its own filter product to trap up to 98% of fine dust particles. Bins are generous for the class, commonly 38 to 45 gallons even mid-range, with 12 or 16 inch throats.

Above the office range, PowerTEC covers high security and digital media: the 727 CS and 747 CS take paper and optical media to a 1 x 5 mm P-7 particle, the 818 HD punches hard drives, and the 808 MS and 828 HD handle mixed media.

Less suited to Anyone shopping on entry price, or wanting a cheap strip-cut machine for non-confidential paper — the listed Dahle range here starts at P-3 and its median machine is the second most expensive of the seven.

MBM Destroyit 46 listings

Germany · sold in the US by MBM Corporation

MBM Corporation sells the German-built Destroyit line in the United States from Charleston, South Carolina. The centre of gravity is the large office: machines meant to be shared by a floor or a building. The 4000 series runs a 16 inch throat and a 44 gallon bin across the line, with the same chassis offered at 1/4 inch strip (P-2), 4 x 40 mm (P-4), 2 x 15 mm (P-5) and 0.8 x 5 mm super micro-cut (P-7).

That is genuinely useful when several sites have different classification requirements and you want one machine, one consumable set, one service arrangement and one operator training sheet. MBM also publishes US list prices openly, which the other two mainstream brands do not.

Less suited to Tight rooms and older buildings. At P-4 the Destroyit takes 37–39 sheets against a comparable Kobra's 48, and it is the heaviest of the three at that tier; the 4005 wants a dedicated 115 V 20-amp line. The lifetime guarantee on cutting shafts also applies to the P-2, P-4 and P-5 variants — the P-6 and P-7 SMC models carry a 1-year limited warranty instead.

intimus 43 listings

Germany · Martin Yale Group

A German brand within the Martin Yale Group, and the range here is strongest at the two ends of the market rather than the middle. At one end, the 45 CP7, 60 CP7, 120 CP7 and 175 CP7 all cut to 0.8 x 4.5 mm — comfortably inside the 5 mm² P-7 limit — with sheet capacities of 5 to 9 and bins from 12 to 46 gallons.

At the other end, the 14.87, 14.95, 16.50S and 16.86 run 220 V three-phase with 17 to 20 inch throats and roughly 140 to 550 sheets per pass at P-2 and P-3, several of them offered paired with the 870 baler. Digital media is covered by the HDD Gladiator and SSD Granulator.

Less suited to The mainstream middle. If you want a straightforward departmental P-4 machine there is more choice at HSM, MBM or ACCO. And three-phase power is a building constraint, not a preference — check the supply before specifying the industrial machines.

ACCO — GBC and Swingline 37 listings

United States · ACCO Brands

ACCO Brands sells shredders in the United States under the GBC and Swingline names, and two things make the range distinctive. The first is the depth of the auto-feed line: AutoFeed+ runs from the 150X to the 750X, in X (P-4) and M (P-5) variants of the same chassis, with trays of 150, 230, 300, 600 and 750 sheets so you can load a stack and walk away. The second is public-sector procurement — the CHS high-security models, including the CHS10-30 at a 1 x 5 mm particle with a 10 inch throat and 30 gallon bin, are marked TAA compliant.

TAA compliance is a procurement rule about country of origin. It is not NSA/CSS approval, which additionally requires Evaluated Products List membership.

Less suited to Heavy manual feeding — the manual-slot capacity is far below the tray figure, so stapled and folded documents slow these machines down. There is also nothing industrial at the top of the range, and ACCO does not publish a manufacturing origin for the line, which some procurement processes will want.

Fellowes 20 listings

United States

A US manufacturer, aimed squarely at home offices, reception desks and small teams: the lowest median machine price of the seven, and the lowest top-end price too, with features designed to make the machine forgiving of people who have never read a manual. The Powershred line (79Ci, 99Ci, 125Ci) is jam-proof cross-cut at P-4 with 9 to 9.5 inch throats. The AutoMax line adds a closing tray for unattended shredding, from the 100M up to the 350C, 550C and 600M with trays of 350 to 600 sheets. The Microshred 225Mi covers P-5, and the Fortishred HS-440 is a DIN P-7 machine at 1/32 x 3/16 inch.

Less suited to A shared floor or a shred station. Nothing in this range carries an industrial duty rating, and as with any P-7 machine the particle is paid for in capacity — the HS-440 takes four sheets a pass. If the machine will run for more than short bursts, look at Kobra or HSM instead.

How to actually decide

Start from the constraint, not the badge

In almost every case the size of the machine and the security level matter more than the name on it. Work out the constraint first and the brand usually picks itself.

  • Volume per day is the constraint Kobra — highest capacity per pass and the clearest continuous-duty commitments.
  • A tender needs full documentation HSM — the most complete published data, and the easiest to attach to a submission.
  • Several sites, different classifications MBM Destroyit — one chassis, four security levels, one service arrangement.
  • The machine sits among desks Dahle — oil-free heads and CleanTEC fine-dust filtration.
  • P-7, or three-phase industrial intimus — strongest at both ends of the scale.
  • Auto-feed, or TAA-compliant procurement ACCO — AutoFeed+ trays to 750 sheets and TAA-marked CHS models.
  • One desk, modest budget Fellowes — the lowest median machine price of the seven.
