Frequently Asked Questions
Can it shred staples and paper clips?
Staples yes, and small paper clips yes. Large paper clips are specifically excluded by Fellowes, as are binder clips and heavy-gauge fasteners. Credit cards, CDs and DVDs are all accepted. Feed cards and discs one at a time rather than with a stack of paper.
What is the duty cycle?
Twenty minutes of continuous operation, followed by a thirty-minute cool-down. That is a reasonable budget for a small office: twenty minutes will clear a considerable stack at sixteen sheets a pass. It is not enough for a records clear-out, and hitting the limit repeatedly is a sign you have bought a size too small.
How often will the 6-gallon bin need emptying?
Roughly every 200 to 300 sheets. Six gallons is modest for a machine that takes sixteen sheets a pass, and cross-cut waste is bulky, so in regular use expect this to be a weekly job at least. The 99Ci carries 9 gallons if that matters to you.
What does SafeSense actually do?
It stops the cutters if hands make contact with the paper entry. On a machine that sits at floor level in an office with people moving around it, that is a genuine safety feature rather than a marketing one, and it is worth having if children or pets share the space.
Will legal paper fit?
Yes. The paper entry is 9 inches (230 mm) wide, which takes US legal at 8.5 inches and A4 at 8.27 inches without folding. Ledger and A3 will not fit — nothing in the small-office Powershred range takes paper that wide.
How often should it be oiled?
Every time you empty the bin, with Fellowes oil part 35250. Oiling is the single maintenance task on this machine and the one most often skipped; a shredder that stops managing its rated sheet count is usually a shredder that has not been oiled rather than one that is worn out.
Is this NSA approved?
No. NSA/CSS 02-01 requires a maximum 1 mm x 5 mm particle and requires the model to be on the NSA Evaluated Products List. This is a P-4 cross-cut machine and neither applies. For that class of requirement Fellowes offers the Fortishred HS-440, which takes four sheets at a time and shreds paper only.
