Kobra vs HSM vs MBM Destroyit: Which Professional Shredder Brand Should You Buy?

There is no single best professional shredder brand. Kobra generally gives you the highest sheet capacity and the clearest continuous-duty statements, HSM gives you the fullest published technical data and the strongest cutting-roller warranty, and MBM Destroyit gives you the widest security-level choice on one chassis and the fastest belt speed. The right answer depends on whether your constraint is throughput, documentation, or security level.
This comparison uses each manufacturer's own published figures for directly comparable machines. Where a brand is weaker, it says so.
Who actually makes these machines
Kobra is the shredder brand of Elcoman srl of Bovisio Masciago, Italy. Design and manufacture are Italian.
HSM is a German manufacturer with a US arm, HSM of America, LLC. It makes both office shredders (the SECURIO range) and industrial baling and shredding plant (the Powerline range).
Destroyit is the shredder brand of MBM Corporation, distributed in the US from Charleston, South Carolina. The machines are German-built.
All three are genuine manufacturers rather than rebadgers, which is the first filter worth applying in this market.
Like-for-like at P-4: the mainstream office comparison
P-4 is where most commercial buying happens — fine enough for general confidential business records, coarse enough not to destroy your throughput. Here are three comparable departmental machines, using each manufacturer's published data.

Two things stand out. Kobra wins on raw sheet capacity by roughly a quarter over the Destroyit. MBM wins decisively on belt speed at 44 ft/min against Kobra's 30 ft/min — which matters more than sheet capacity if your work is a steady stream of small stacks rather than occasional thick ones.
A note on cut sizes. Kobra and MBM both publish "3/16 x 1 1/2 in" for their P-4 machines; HSM publishes 3.9 x 40 mm. These describe the same particle. The inch figures are rounded conversions, and DIN classification is always performed on the metric particle — 3.9 x 40 mm gives 156 mm², inside P-4's 160 mm² limit. If you calculate from the rounded inch figure you get roughly 181 mm² and appear to fail. Always classify from the metric.
Like-for-like at P-7: the high-security comparison
P-7 is the tier that matters for classified material. NSA/CSS requires a maximum edge size of 1 mm x 5 mm, which is a P-7 particle.

The warranty row is the most important line in this article, and it is the one nobody advertises. Both HSM and MBM narrow their headline warranty at the high-security tier. HSM's lifetime cutting-roller warranty explicitly excludes its 0.78 x 11 mm and 1 x 5 mm models. MBM's lifetime guarantee on cutting shafts applies to its P-2, P-4 and P-5 Destroyit 4005 variants, but the P-6 and P-7 SMC models carry a 1-year limited warranty on all components instead.
This is not a criticism of either firm. Cutting a 5 mm² particle wears steel far faster than cutting a 156 mm² one, and pretending otherwise would be the dishonest option. But it does mean that if you are comparing a P-5 quotation against a P-7 quotation, the P-7 machine carries meaningfully more lifetime cost risk, and you should price consumables and cylinder replacement into the comparison rather than assuming the warranty covers it.
Where each brand is strongest
Kobra
Explicit, model-specific continuous-duty statements. Elcoman describes the 430 TS C4 AO as a "24 hours continuous duty motor: no duty cycle or timed cool down period", and publishes 24-hour continuous duty ratings for the 400 C4 AO and the 310 TS SS5. Kobra also leads on sheet capacity at comparable price tiers, and its industrial line — the conveyor-fed 430 TS and the 8 HP Cyclone — reaches further up the volume scale than a SECURIO or a Destroyit 4005. HSM
The most complete published data of the three, and the broadest product ladder — SECURIO office machines at one end, Powerline shredder-baler combinations, PET crushers and barrel presses at the other. If you need one supplier to cover document destruction and waste-volume reduction, HSM is the only one of the three that does both. The HSM range is the largest on this site for that reason.
MBM Destroyit
The widest security choice on a single chassis. The Destroyit 4005 is offered at P-2, P-4, P-5, P-6 and P-7 with the same 16 in feed, same 44 gallon bin and same footprint. That is genuinely useful when you are standardising across sites with different classification requirements and want one set of consumables, one service contract and one operator training sheet. Where each brand is weaker
Kobra: the thinnest published technical data of the three. Elcoman does not publish a headline cutting-cylinder warranty on its product pages, does not publish duty-cycle statements for every model including the Cyclone, and does not publish the screen apertures that determine the Cyclone's security level. Get the warranty terms in writing from your dealer before ordering. US dealer and service density is also lower than HSM's.
HSM: the office machines are electrically specified for 220–240 V on HSM's European data, and US electrical configuration must be confirmed per order rather than assumed. HSM also does not publish shred speed in ft/min for the SECURIO line, which makes direct throughput comparison against Kobra and MBM harder than it should be. And as above, the lifetime cutting-roller warranty stops at the high-security models.
MBM Destroyit: the lowest sheet capacity of the three at P-4 (37–39 against Kobra's 48), and the heaviest machine at that tier at 390 lb. The 4005 also requires a dedicated 115 V 20-amp line, which is a real constraint in older buildings. At the industrial end, MBM's ladder tops out earlier: the Destroyit 5009 is a large conveyor-fed machine, but MBM does not offer integrated baling the way HSM's Powerline range does.
How to actually decide
- Constraint is volume per day — Kobra. Highest capacity per pass and the clearest continuous-duty commitments.
- Constraint is a procurement process that demands full documentation — HSM. The published data is the most complete and the easiest to attach to a tender.
- Constraint is standardising several sites at different security levels — MBM Destroyit. One chassis, five levels, one service arrangement.
- You also need to compress the output — HSM, because of the shredder-baler combinations.

Which brand is best overall, Kobra, HSM or MBM?
None of them is best overall, and any source that says otherwise is not comparing like with like. On the directly comparable P-4 machines above, Kobra leads on sheet capacity, MBM leads on shred speed, and HSM leads on published documentation and warranty breadth. Decide by which of those three is your binding constraint.
Are Kobra, HSM and MBM shredders NSA approved?
Individual models from all three have appeared on the NSA/CSS Evaluated Products List for paper shredders. On the October 2021 revision, HSM of America appears in its own right, MBM Destroyit models appear under Whitaker Brothers Business Machines, and a Kobra series appears under Marquis Business Systems. Listings are per model number and the list is revised periodically, so check the current EPL for the specific model you intend to buy. A P-4 or P-5 machine from any of these brands is never NSA approved for classified paper.

Why does the same shredder have different sheet capacities at different security levels?
Because a finer particle requires more cuts per sheet, which takes more torque from the same motor. On the MBM Destroyit 4005, one chassis with one 2 1/8 HP motor gives 50–52 sheets at P-2, 37–39 at P-4, 24–26 at P-5 and 10–12 at P-7. Moving two levels up the DIN scale typically costs you more throughput than any other single specification decision.
Is shred speed or sheet capacity the better throughput measure?
It depends on how your operators feed the machine. Sheet capacity governs how thick a stack can go in at once, which matters for bulk purge work. Shred speed in ft/min governs how quickly each sheet clears, which matters for continuous single-file feeding at a shared machine. The MBM Destroyit 4005 at 44 ft/min and the Kobra 400 C4 AO at 30 ft/min illustrate the trade-off: MBM clears faster, Kobra takes more at once.
Do all three brands run continuously?
All three publish continuous-operation language for their departmental and industrial machines. MBM describes the Destroyit 4005 motor as "rated for continuous operation" and the 5009's dual three-phase motors likewise. HSM states the P44i's motor "ensures a high cutting capacity and reliable continuous operation". Kobra is the most specific, giving explicit "24 hour continuous duty" ratings with no timed cool-down on named models. Smaller and personal machines from all three brands are a different matter and should be checked individually.
