How sensitive is the material?

This is the question that actually decides the machine. DIN 66399 grades paper destruction from P-1 to P-7 by the area of the largest particle — there is no P-8. Read the full DIN 66399 guide.

How sensitive is the material?

Internal notes and drafts — no personal data P-2 (≤800 mm²), strip cut. Be careful here: P-1 and P-2 are strip cut, they only stop casual reading, and they are not a confidentiality control. Do not use them for anything covered by a privacy duty.

Ordinary business paper P-3 (≤320 mm²). The sensible floor for a workplace: internal reports, correspondence, non-personal records.

Business records containing personal data P-4 (≤160 mm²). HR files, invoices, customer details, payroll. This is what most offices handling personal data actually buy.

Confidential personal data P-5 (≤30 mm²), micro cut. Medical, legal, financial and client files — the usual choice for clinics, law firms and finance.

Highly confidential or trade secrets P-6 (≤10 mm²). R&D, M&A, source documents, anything where reconstruction would be catastrophic.

Classified government material P-7 (≤5 mm²), the highest DIN 66399 paper class. For classified US government material the machine must also appear on the NSA/CSS Evaluated Products List — a P-7 rating on its own does not qualify. Choosing this limits results to machines that are both P-7 and EPL listed.

How much goes in at once?

Sheet capacity is the number of sheets a machine takes in a single pass. Buying under your real volume is the most common mistake — people force the throat and jam it.
