Authorized MBM Destroyit dealer New stock through the manufacturer's authorized channel, with the manufacturer's own warranty · what this covers

Description

The Destroyit 4003 cross-cut is the variant of MBM's 4003 most general offices end up buying. It cuts to 4 x 40 mm - 160 mm², which sits exactly on the DIN 66399 P-4 boundary - and it is one of only two 4003 builds MBM clears for optical media. That combination is what separates it from its siblings: the strip-cut 4003 is faster but only P-2, the 2 x 15 mm version is more secure but drops to 16-18 sheets, and the super micro-cut version halves throughput again and is paper-only.

Key Features

  • P-4 cross cut at 4 x 40 mm, the level most organisations specify for personal data and internal commercial documents.
  • Automatic oil injection lubricates the cutting shafts on cross-cut models, which is the single biggest factor in cross-cut shaft life.
  • ECC+ Electronic Capacity Control shows how much of the sheet capacity is being used while you feed, so operators learn where the limit is instead of jamming into it.
  • EASY-SWITCH control element reports machine status through colour codes and back-lit symbols rather than an error beep.
  • SPS safety package with an electronically controlled transparent flap across the 16-inch feed opening.
  • ZERO ENERGY standby: after 15 minutes idle the machine disconnects from the supply completely and draws 0 Wh.
  • Automatic reverse and power cut-off on overfeed, automatic stop when the bin is full, and a magnetic proximity switch that kills the drive if the cabinet door is opened.
  • Mobile on castors; the 44-gallon bin runs lined or unlined.

MBM quotes sheet capacity at 70 gsm paper on its published spec sheet and prints an explicit caveat alongside it: "realistic throughputs can be as low as half that of the theoretical capacities quoted." US 20 lb bond is roughly 75 gsm and slightly heavier, so plan around the lower end of the range, not the headline number.

What's in the Box

The machine ships assembled on castors with its shred bin, the printed operating manual and the power cord. The bin is designed to be used with or without a liner, so disposable bags are not included - order MBM part #9000 410 (box of 50) if you want to bag the waste. Shredder oil is also sold separately.

Who Should Buy This - and Who Should Not

Buy it if you are equipping a shared office area or a department that shreds continuously for 20-30 minutes at a time and needs a defensible P-4 rating. The 44-gallon bin and 16-inch throat mean it will take continuous-form printouts and folded tabloid sheets, and it will destroy the occasional expired access card or backup disc without a second machine.

Do not buy it if your retention policy or your client contracts specify P-5 or higher - a 4 x 40 mm particle is legible under reconstruction effort that P-5 defeats, and you want the DSH0502L (4005, 2 x 15 mm) or the DSH0397O super micro-cut 4003 instead. Do not buy it if you shred more than roughly 400 sheets an hour, day in day out; at that duty the 4005 chassis (DSH0501L) gives the same P-4 cut with a 2.12 hp motor and 37-39 sheet capacity, and the conveyor-fed 4108 is the real answer above that. And if a single desk is all you are covering, this is a 179 lb floor machine on castors, not a deskside unit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can this shred staples and paper clips?

Yes. The 4003 cross-cut is rated for paper containing staples and paper clips, and MBM's spec sheet also clears P-2 and P-4 models for the most common CDs and DVDs. Optical media and cards are abrasive, so feed them one at a time and oil the cutting shafts afterwards. The automatic oil injection system on cross-cut models handles routine lubrication, but a run of discs is not routine use.

How many people can share it before it bottlenecks?

As a rule of thumb, a 4003 cross-cut comfortably serves a floor of 10 to 20 people doing normal end-of-day shredding. The limit is not the motor, it is the 44-gallon bin and the 34-36 sheet pass. If two or more people regularly queue at the machine, or you are clearing archive boxes, move up to the 4005 or the conveyor-fed 4108 rather than adding a second 4003.

Does it really use no power on standby?

MBM states that ZERO ENERGY standby disconnects the machine from the supply completely after 15 minutes of inactivity and that it then consumes 0 Wh. It wakes on the photocell when paper enters the throat. The practical consequence is that you can leave it switched on at the wall without it contributing to standby load, which matters if facilities is tracking plug-load energy.

Will legal or tabloid paper fit?

Yes. The feed opening is 16 inches, so US legal (8.5 x 14 in) and letter both enter long edge first with room to spare, and 11 x 17 tabloid goes in folded once. MBM specifically calls out the 16-inch opening as suitable for continuous forms and large formats. Sheet capacity figures are quoted for A4/letter, so expect fewer sheets per pass on heavier or larger stock.

Is this NSA approved?

No. NSA/CSS 02-01 requires a maximum particle of 1 mm x 5 mm and the specific model to appear on the NSA Evaluated Products List. A 4 x 40 mm cross cut is far outside that. If you need NSA-listed destruction, look at the super micro-cut 4003 (DSH0397O) as a starting point and verify the exact model against the current EPL yourself - a P-7 rating on its own is not NSA approval.

How often will the bin need emptying?

A 44-gallon bin holds roughly 700 to 900 sheets' worth of 4 x 40 mm cross-cut waste before it stops accepting more, though the number moves with how well the particles settle. The machine stops automatically when the bin is full rather than packing itself solid. For a 20-person floor that typically means emptying once or twice a week.

What is the difference between this and the DSH0501L?

Same P-4 cut size, different chassis. The DSH0501L is the 4005, which uses a 2.12 hp motor instead of 1.75 hp, takes 37-39 sheets instead of 34-36, and ships at 378 lb against 179 lb. Both use a 16-inch throat and a 44-gallon bin. Choose the 4003 for lower cost and lighter duty; choose the 4005 if the machine will run for long stretches.
