KOBRA 240 HS-6

The KOBRA 240 HS-6 is a compact high-security shredder that cuts paper to 0.8 x 5 mm particles, the DIN 66399 P-7 level, and is named on the NSA/CSS Evaluated Products List for Paper Shredders (January 2026 edition). It takes 4-5 sheets per pass on 70 g/m² paper through a 9.5 in (240 mm) throat and empties into a bagless 9.5-gallon bin. What the NSA listing and P-7 mean in practice

Two separate standards apply here. DIN 66399 limits a P-7 particle to 5 mm²; the 240 HS-6 produces 4 mm², and Kobra states a single sheet ends up as roughly 20,000 pieces. NSA/CSS Specification 02-01 asks for particles no larger than 1 mm x 5 mm and, crucially, for the exact model to appear on the Evaluated Products List. A P-7 rating alone does not satisfy that second condition; this model is named on the January 2026 list as "Kobra 240 HS-6". The EPL is updated periodically, so confirm the current edition before a compliance purchase.

Built on Kobra's 240 cabinet

The 240 HS-6 shares its drive with Kobra's other 240 machines: steel gears and a metal chain, which Kobra calls the Super Potential Power Unit, behind a motor rated for 24-hour duty with thermal protection. Electronic eyes start and stop the cutters, and Energy Smart standby lowers power use between batches with illuminated indicators. The 35-liter bin slides out without lifting the cutting head and stops the knives when removed; Kobra states no plastic bags are needed.

Working within a 4-5 sheet limit

A head that cuts this fine cannot take thick stacks, so plan for small batches. Kobra's European data gives 4-5 sheets at 70 g/m² and 3-4 at 80 g/m²; its US page states up to 6. Only paper and films are on the materials list. Remove staples and clips before feeding, as is standard practice with high-security heads, and keep cards and discs for a separate machine.

Who should buy the 240 HS-6

Buy it when a security officer, contract or policy requires an NSA/CSS-listed shredder or P-7 and the daily volume is modest. It fits under a desk in a private office or secure room. It is not a general office shredder: the small stack, paper-and-film-only list and frequent bin emptying make it slow for routine work, where a P-4 or P-5 machine is the better buy.
