The HSM SECURIO AF500 3/16 x 1 1/8 (model 2103) is a P-4 cross-cut autofeed shredder that processes stacks of up to 500 sheets into 4.5 x 30 mm particles and collects them in a 21.7-gallon (82 l) container. It is the fastest AF500 head, taking 14-16 sheets per manual pass, and the only one in the range rated for CDs, DVDs and cards. It suits a busy department shredding large volumes of ordinary confidential paper along with the occasional disc.

AF500 P-4: the essentials

The broadest-rated head in the AF500 range

The P-5 and P-6 AF500 heads are aimed at paper. This coarser head accepts paper with staples and clips, credit and ID cards, and CDs and DVDs, which lets one cabinet deal with a drawer of old backup discs and expired badges as well as the filing. Discs and cards go through the 9.45 in (240 mm) manual slot one at a time, never into the automatic tray, which is designed for loose paper. Plastic works the rollers harder than paper, so treat disc shredding as an occasional job.

Unattended shredding with the Lock-and-Go tray

Load up to 500 sheets, close and lock the magazine lid, and the AF500 works through the stack alone. The lock stops someone passing from lifting documents back out while they wait; it is a deterrent rather than a rated security container, and the bin is not locked. Pull large binder clips and spiral bindings before loading, because bulky metal stops the feed roller separating sheets. When the container is full, the display says so and the machine stops.

Liners, oil and power for the AF500 P-4

The cabinet takes HSM's cardboard box insert for the AF500/B32 rather than a plastic bag, sold separately. Cutting-block oil is also an accessory, worth budgeting for if the machine runs daily. The 610 W motor runs from 110-120 V, and EcoSmart standby powers the machine down to 0.1 W between jobs.

AF500 P-4 or another model?

  • AF500 1/16 x 5/8: P-5 in the same cabinet, 9-11 sheets per pass, no disc rating.
  • AF500 1/32 x 7/16: P-6, 6 sheets per pass, paper and film only.
  • AF300 3/16 x 1 1/8: the same P-4 particle with a 300-sheet tray, 12-14 sheets by hand and a 9.2-gallon (35 l) bin, for smaller offices.

Who should buy it

It fits a department that clears out archive boxes several times a quarter and wants one machine for paper, cards and discs. If a policy or contract asks for P-5 or higher for your records, step to the 1/16 x 5/8 AF500 and accept the slower pass and loss of disc capability.

Can the HSM SECURIO AF500 3/16 x 1 1/8 shred CDs and DVDs?

Yes. It is the only AF500 head HSM rates for optical media, at O-3, and it also handles cards at T-4. Feed discs singly through the manual slot, never through the automatic tray, and keep disc shredding to occasional batches.

How many sheets does the AF500 P-4 take per pass?

It takes 14-16 sheets of 80 g/m² paper through the manual slot, according to HSM's datasheet, the highest of the three AF500 heads. The automatic tray holds up to 500 sheets and runs on its own.

How often does the AF500 bin need emptying?

It depends on volume, but the 82-liter (21.7-gallon) container is far larger than the 35-liter bins on the AF300 and AF350. A display warns when it is full and the machine stops. The liner is HSM's cardboard box insert for the AF500/B32.

What does Lock-and-Go do on the AF500?

It locks the lid of the automatic feed magazine so a loaded stack cannot be lifted out by someone passing by. It deters casual retrieval of documents waiting to be shredded, but it is not a rated security container, and the waste bin itself does not lock.

Is the AF500 P-4 secure enough for personal data?
