The Dahle 40534 is a P-7 micro-cut department shredder that turns paper into 1 mm x 4.7 mm particles through a 12-inch feed opening, emptying into a 38-gallon bin. It is meant for organizations that set their own top-tier DIN 66399 standard and want the widest throat and largest bin Dahle offers at this particle size. Buyers who need NSA/CSS 02-01 compliance should note that the 40534 was on the NSA/CSS Evaluated Products List in October 2024 but is missing from the January and April 2026 updates.

DIN P-7 versus NSA listing on the 40534

These are two separate approvals, and the 40534 holds only one of them today. Under DIN 66399, P-7 is the strictest class for paper, capping each particle at 5 mm². At 4.7 mm², the 40534 qualifies in full, so any internal or commercial policy written to DIN P-7 is met. Federal classified destruction is a different matter: NSA/CSS 02-01 accepts only models that are currently listed on the EPL, and this one has dropped off. If that listing is a hard requirement, specify the Dahle 40434 (same particle, 30 gallons, 10.25-inch feed), the Dahle 20394 (16-inch feed, 50 gallons), or the CleanTEC 41534, the dust-filtered version of this chassis that is still listed.

Why the 12-inch throat and 38-gallon bin matter

With fine cuts, the work tends to slow down in two places: lining up a stack to fit the slot, and stopping to swap bags. The extra width over the 10.25-inch models makes stacks easier to square up and feed, and the larger bin means fewer interruptions in the middle of a session. Inside, a chain drive turns the cylinders rather than a belt. The EvenFlow Lubricator oils them continuously, and an overfeed triggers automatic reverse. SmartPower switches the machine to standby and powers it down after 30 minutes of idle time.

Do not mix bag sizes up. The 38-gallon bin takes Dahle 20726 bags, while the 30-gallon 40434 uses the smaller 20725. Shredder oil comes as Dahle 20721 (12 oz) or 20722 (1 gallon). Bags and oil are both bought separately.

• Dahle 40434: the same 1 x 4.7 mm cut and 8-sheet pass in a smaller cabinet with a 10.25-inch throat and 30 gallons. It is currently EPL-listed.
• Dahle 40530: the same cabinet, throat and bin at P-6 (about 8.8 mm²). It takes 10 sheets per pass at 50 dB, which makes it the quicker option where policy allows P-6.
• CleanTEC 41534: this chassis with fine dust filtration, and it is still on the NSA list.

Is the 40534 right for you?

It suits a department that has written its own policy to DIN P-7, shares the machine among several people, and values a wide feed and a large bin. It is a poor choice wherever an auditor will look for an EPL entry, and for anyone who needs to destroy discs, cards or stapled files, because Dahle rates it for paper only.
