Description

The Dahle 40534 is the widest-throat machine in Dahle's P-7 department range: a 12-inch feed opening and a 38-gallon bin behind cutting cylinders that reduce paper to 1 mm x 4.7 mm particles, at eight sheets a pass. One thing has to be said plainly before anything else. Although this model was previously listed on the NSA/CSS Evaluated Products List for paper shredders, it does not appear on the current list - it is present in the October 2024 update but absent from January 2026 and April 2026. If NSA/CSS 02-01 compliance is a hard requirement for you, specify a model that is currently listed.

Key Features

  • P-7 particle at 4.7 mm2. 1 mm x 4.7 mm output, inside DIN 66399's 5 mm2 ceiling for P-7, which is the highest security class the standard defines for paper.
  • 12-inch feed opening. The widest throat Dahle offers in this cabinet family. Stacks feed more forgivingly and wider stock goes in without folding.
  • 38-gallon bin. Eight gallons more than the 40434, which on a P-7 machine translates into noticeably fewer bag changes.
  • Eight sheets a pass. Eight sheets of #20 bond, ten of #16 - the same rating as the 40434 and well above the five-sheet 40334.
  • Automatic EvenFlow Lubricator. Continuous oiling across the cutting cylinders, which a P-7 head depends on.
  • SmartPower energy management. SmartPower energy management drops the machine into standby and powers it down after 30 minutes of inactivity, so it is not drawing current overnight.
  • Automatic jam protection and chain-driven motor. Overfeed detection with reverse, and a chain rather than a belt to the cylinders.

What's in the Box

Dahle does not publish a full carton packing list. Expect the shredder on its 38-gallon cabinet with the power cord. Shred bags are not included - the 38-gallon bin takes Dahle 20726 bags (31-55 gallon shredders, 100 per box), not the smaller 20725 size used by the 40334 and 40434. Lubricator oil is separate: Dahle 20721 (12 oz) or 20722 (1 gallon).

Who Should Buy This - and Who Should Not

Buy the 40534 if you want the finest cut Dahle makes with the most generous throat and bin in that cut, and your requirement is a security standard you set yourself rather than a federal accreditation. As a commercial high-security machine it is a strong specification: 1 x 4.7 mm particles, a 12-inch feed and 38 gallons for a department of five or more.

Do not buy it if the NSA/CSS Evaluated Products List is part of your specification. The 40534 is not on the current list. The Dahle 40434 is currently listed at the same 1 x 4.7 mm particle and the same eight sheets a pass, in a 30-gallon cabinet with a 10.25-inch throat; the Dahle 20394 is listed with a 16-inch throat and 50 gallons; and Dahle's CleanTEC 41534 - the dust-filtered version of this very machine - remains on the list. Do not buy it for mixed media either: it takes paper only, no CDs, cards or staples. And note the warranty split - two years on the machine but only one year on the cutting cylinders, where Dahle's P-3 to P-5 models get lifetime cover.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Dahle 40534 NSA approved?

Not on the current list. 'Dahle 40534' appeared on the NSA/CSS Evaluated Products List for paper shredders in the October 2024 quarterly update, but it is not present in the January 2026 or April 2026 updates, which do list the CleanTEC 41534 alongside the 40334, 40434, 41334, 41434, 20394 and 20434 DS. NSA/CSS 02-01 requires the specific model to be listed, so we cannot describe the 40534 as NSA approved today. Check the current EPL yourself before specifying it for classified work.

If I need an NSA-listed machine, what should I buy instead?

Three options, depending on what you value. The Dahle 40434 is currently listed with a High throughput rating, the same 1 x 4.7 mm cut and the same eight sheets a pass, in a 30-gallon cabinet with a 10.25-inch throat. The Dahle 20394 is listed with a 16-inch throat, a 50-gallon bin and nine sheets. And the Dahle 41534 - the CleanTEC dust-filtered variant of this chassis - is listed, which is the closest match if the 12-inch throat and 38-gallon bin are what you want.

Does it still meet DIN 66399 P-7?

Yes. The DIN rating and the NSA listing are separate things. The 40534 cuts to 1 mm x 4.7 mm, which is 4.7 mm2 - inside the 5 mm2 maximum DIN 66399 sets for P-7, the highest class defined for paper. For commercial and internal security policies written against DIN, the 40534 fully qualifies. It is only federal accreditation against NSA/CSS 02-01 that turns on the EPL listing.

Can it shred CDs, credit cards or stapled files?

No. Dahle rates the 40534 for paper only. Producing a 1 mm wide particle requires cylinders milled to very tight tolerances, and metal or hard plastic will damage them - a serious matter when the cutting cylinders on Dahle's high-security models are warranted for one year. Remove staples, clips and fasteners before feeding, and destroy optical media by another method.

What shred bags fit the 38-gallon bin?

Dahle 20726, rated for 31-55 gallon shredders and supplied 100 to a box. None are included with the machine. If you also run 40334 or 40434 machines, note that those take the smaller 20725 bags - the two are not interchangeable. P-7 waste is very fine, so use the gusseted 1.5 mil bags rather than a thin generic liner that can split when lifted.

How does it compare with the P-6 Dahle 40530?

Same cabinet family, same 38-gallon bin, same 12-inch throat, same 146 lb. The 40530 is P-6 at roughly 8.8 mm2 and takes ten sheets a pass at 50 dB; the 40534 is P-7 at 4.7 mm2 and takes eight sheets at 52 dB. The 40534 is about an inch deeper. If your policy is written to P-6, the 40530 is faster and cheaper; if it is written to P-7, the 40534 is the machine in this footprint.

What does the warranty cover?

Two years on the machine and one year on the cutting cylinders. That one-year cylinder term applies to all of Dahle's P-6 and P-7 models; the P-3, P-4 and P-5 machines get a lifetime cutting-cylinder warranty instead. On a shared department machine producing a 4.7 mm2 particle every day, the cutting head is the component that wears, so budget accordingly.
