Description

This is the fastest, hungriest version of the Powerline FA 400.2 and the least secure: an 11.8 mm strip cut rated DIN 66399 P-1, taking up to 144 sheets in a single pass. Buy it when the job is destroying paper volume, not protecting secrets.

P-1 is a bulk-reduction level. It renders documents unreadable as whole pages and makes them worthless to a casual passer-by or a skip-diver, but an 11.8 mm strip leaves whole words and often whole lines intact. It is the right level for expired catalogues, superseded print runs, misprints, internal notices, marketing overstock and general non-confidential paper waste — the material that occupies a lot of bin space and no risk register. It is the wrong level for anything with a name, an account number or a signature on it.

Key Features

  • 428 mm (16.85") intake across the full width. Letter, legal and A3 all go in unfolded, landscape or portrait, and so do lever-arch files broken down flat. Nobody has to pre-trim anything.
  • 460 litre removable container. The bin rolls out of the cabinet rather than being lifted, which matters at this size — a full container of shredded paper is heavy enough that a lift-out design would be a manual-handling problem.
  • Continuous-duty motor. The FA 400.2 is built to run all day rather than in bursts. That is the difference between a departmental machine and a central shredding station, and it is the reason HSM positions this chassis for archives and records-destruction rooms.
  • Induction-hardened solid steel cutting rollers. Staples, paper clips and the odd credit card go through without a separate sorting step, which is what makes a central station practical — you cannot ask twelve departments to de-staple reliably.
  • Integrated manual oiler. Cutting-head lubrication is a scheduled task on a machine that runs at this duty, and the on-board oiler means it is done from the front panel rather than with an aerosol and a torch.
  • Storage table on top. Data carriers and stacks waiting to go in have somewhere to sit, which sounds trivial until you watch someone balance a box on a bin lid.
  • Mobile on lockable castors, with emergency stop. It can be repositioned by two people and locked in place, and the emergency-off switch is a requirement in most facilities that run a shared destruction room.

The 144-sheet figure is the practical headline here. Because the cut is coarse, the motor is doing far less work per page than it does in the particle-cut versions, so a whole ream section goes through in one bite. In a records room clearing pallets of superseded paper, that difference compounds across a day.

Metric figures are HSM's published values for the equivalent EU article number; imperial figures are converted from those. Sheet capacity is quoted at 80 g/m² paper, which is HSM's per-model datasheet standard — HSM's overview brochure quotes the same machines at 70 g/m², which reads about 15% higher. Compare like with like when you benchmark against another brand.

Shredder bags and cutting oil are not included and are ordered separately as consumables. HSM lists reusable collection bags, special cutting oil, dust extraction, table extensions and collection trolleys as accessories for this chassis; we have not published a bag part number for the FA 400.2 because we could not verify one against HSM's own documentation. Ask us before you order bags rather than guessing from a smaller model's part number.

Who Should Buy This — and Who Should Not

Buy the 11.8 mm FA 400.2 if your problem is tonnage. Print rooms, publishers, mailing houses, university departments clearing old course packs, and facilities teams disposing of superseded manuals all generate paper that has to disappear but does not have to be protected. At 144 sheets a pass this machine clears that faster than anything else in the Powerline range, and the coarse cut means less wear and less heat for the same throughput.

Do not buy it for personal data. If your material is covered by GDPR, HIPAA, FACTA or an internal confidentiality policy, P-1 will not satisfy an auditor and should not be presented as if it might. Step up within the same chassis: the 5.8 mm P-2 version keeps a strip cut but halves the strip width, the 5.8 x 50 mm P-3 is the usual minimum for routine commercial confidentiality, and the 3.9 x 40 mm P-4 is where most data-protection policies actually land. All four share this cabinet, so the footprint, intake and bin are identical and only the cutting head and throughput change.

Also think twice if you are short of floor space or power. This is a 445 kg, 1.6 m deep, three-phase machine. For a shared office corridor, a smaller single-phase SECURIO is the honest recommendation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is P-1 good enough for confidential documents?

No, and we would rather say so plainly. DIN 66399 P-1 allows particles up to 2000 mm², and an 11.8 mm strip leaves whole words and frequently whole lines readable. It is designed for bulk paper that is not sensitive. If the documents contain names, account numbers, medical details or signatures, use P-3 as an absolute floor and P-4 for anything covered by a data-protection policy. The same FA 400.2 cabinet is available in both.

Can it really take 144 sheets in one go?

That is HSM's rating at 80 g/m² paper, which is the standard used on their per-model datasheets. It is achievable with flat, loose, room-temperature paper fed square to the throat. Stapled sets, folded sheets, glossy stock and paper that has been sitting in a damp store all reduce it. In practice, feeding a comfortable 100 to 120 sheets keeps the machine running continuously rather than cycling through jam recovery, and continuous feeding beats maximum-stack feeding on total throughput.

Do I have to remove staples and paper clips?

No. HSM rates this cutting head for staples, paper clips, credit cards, CDs and diskettes as well as paper, and the rollers are induction-hardened solid steel. That is a genuine operational advantage in a central shredding station, where material arrives from several departments and you cannot rely on everyone stripping fasteners first. Large binder clips and ring-binder mechanisms are still metal that does not belong in a cutting head — take those off.

Will legal and A3 paper fit?

Yes. The intake is 428 mm (16.85 inches) wide, so US legal at 8.5 inches and A3 at 297 mm both pass through comfortably in either orientation. Continuous/computer fanfold paper is also on HSM's list of accepted materials for this machine. The intake width is identical across all four FA 400.2 cut sizes, so it is not a reason to choose between them.

How often will the 460 litre bin need emptying?

Less often than on the finer cuts, because a strip cut leaves the shred fluffier but far less fragmented. As a working rule, a 460 litre container holds on the order of 20,000 to 25,000 strip-cut sheets before it needs changing, though how well the material settles varies a lot with paper type. On a heavy clearance day expect to change it once; on normal departmental use it will run for weeks. The container rolls out rather than lifting out.

What power supply does it need?

Three-phase. HSM publishes the EU article for this machine at 400 V / 50 Hz. North American three-phase installations run at 60 Hz and a different voltage, so the machine you receive is configured differently from the EU datasheet and you should confirm the exact supply with us before ordering. Do not assume it will run from a standard wall outlet — this is a hard-wired installation, not a plug-in office shredder.

How loud is it?

HSM quotes approximately 61 dB(A) at idle. Under load it is louder, as any shredder is. Sixty-one decibels is roughly conversational speech at a metre, which is unremarkable for a machine this size but is not something you want two metres from a desk. It belongs in a dedicated destruction room, a print room or a store, and that is where the continuous-duty design assumes it will live.

Is this NSA approved?

No. NSA/CSS 02-01 requires a maximum 1 mm x 5 mm particle and requires the specific model to appear on the NSA Evaluated Products List. An 11.8 mm strip cut is roughly two orders of magnitude away from that, and no Powerline FA 400.2 variant is offered as an NSA-listed machine. If you need NSA-listed destruction for classified material, you need a high-security micro-cut model that is named on the current EPL — ask us and we will point you at one rather than selling you this.
