Is P-1 good enough for confidential documents?
No, and we would rather say so plainly. DIN 66399 P-1 allows particles up to 2000 mm², and an 11.8 mm strip leaves whole words and frequently whole lines readable. It is designed for bulk paper that is not sensitive. If the documents contain names, account numbers, medical details or signatures, use P-3 as an absolute floor and P-4 for anything covered by a data-protection policy. The same FA 400.2 cabinet is available in both.
Can it really take 144 sheets in one go?
That is HSM's rating at 80 g/m² paper, which is the standard used on their per-model datasheets. It is achievable with flat, loose, room-temperature paper fed square to the throat. Stapled sets, folded sheets, glossy stock and paper that has been sitting in a damp store all reduce it. In practice, feeding a comfortable 100 to 120 sheets keeps the machine running continuously rather than cycling through jam recovery, and continuous feeding beats maximum-stack feeding on total throughput.
Do I have to remove staples and paper clips?
No. HSM rates this cutting head for staples, paper clips, credit cards, CDs and diskettes as well as paper, and the rollers are induction-hardened solid steel. That is a genuine operational advantage in a central shredding station, where material arrives from several departments and you cannot rely on everyone stripping fasteners first. Large binder clips and ring-binder mechanisms are still metal that does not belong in a cutting head — take those off.
Will legal and A3 paper fit?
Yes. The intake is 428 mm (16.85 inches) wide, so US legal at 8.5 inches and A3 at 297 mm both pass through comfortably in either orientation. Continuous/computer fanfold paper is also on HSM's list of accepted materials for this machine. The intake width is identical across all four FA 400.2 cut sizes, so it is not a reason to choose between them.
How often will the 460 litre bin need emptying?
Less often than on the finer cuts, because a strip cut leaves the shred fluffier but far less fragmented. As a working rule, a 460 litre container holds on the order of 20,000 to 25,000 strip-cut sheets before it needs changing, though how well the material settles varies a lot with paper type. On a heavy clearance day expect to change it once; on normal departmental use it will run for weeks. The container rolls out rather than lifting out.
What power supply does it need?
Three-phase. HSM publishes the EU article for this machine at 400 V / 50 Hz. North American three-phase installations run at 60 Hz and a different voltage, so the machine you receive is configured differently from the EU datasheet and you should confirm the exact supply with us before ordering. Do not assume it will run from a standard wall outlet — this is a hard-wired installation, not a plug-in office shredder.
How loud is it?
HSM quotes approximately 61 dB(A) at idle. Under load it is louder, as any shredder is. Sixty-one decibels is roughly conversational speech at a metre, which is unremarkable for a machine this size but is not something you want two metres from a desk. It belongs in a dedicated destruction room, a print room or a store, and that is where the continuous-duty design assumes it will live.
Is this NSA approved?
No. NSA/CSS 02-01 requires a maximum 1 mm x 5 mm particle and requires the specific model to appear on the NSA Evaluated Products List. An 11.8 mm strip cut is roughly two orders of magnitude away from that, and no Powerline FA 400.2 variant is offered as an NSA-listed machine. If you need NSA-listed destruction for classified material, you need a high-security micro-cut model that is named on the current EPL — ask us and we will point you at one rather than selling you this.
