HSM Powerline FA400.2 1/4 x 2 Document Shredder - HSM1514

The HSM Powerline FA400.2 1/4 x 2 in (HSM1514) is a P-3 cross-cut industrial shredder that reduces paper to 5.8 x 50 mm particles at 96 sheets per pass, emptying into a 121.5 US gal (460 L) bin. It is the first head on the FA 400.2 chassis that produces separate particles instead of strips, while giving up only a little speed compared with the strip cuts. It suits central shredding stations that need a confidential cross cut at industrial volume.

The particle math behind P-3

DIN 66399 sets a ceiling of 320 mm² per particle for P-3. A 5.8 x 50 mm piece measures 290 mm², which qualifies with modest headroom near the top of the band. Because the output is discrete particles rather than ribbons, it meets most commercial confidentiality policies covering contracts, pricing, client proofs and internal correspondence. Most data-protection guidance, though, asks for P-4 when the paper identifies individuals.

Why the move from strip to cross cut is cheap on this machine

The P-3 head makes the same 5.8 mm lengthwise cuts as the P-2 strip head and adds a cross break every 50 mm. That extra work is small, so capacity drops only from 104 to 96 sheets. For a site told to replace an old strip-cut machine with a cross cut, this keeps productivity almost unchanged, and because the cabinet, opening and bin match the strip-cut FA 400.2, room layout and routines stay the same. Solid, induction-hardened steel rollers take staples, paper clips and credit cards; the manual oiler, top storage table and emergency stop come standard.

Choosing among the FA 400.2 heads

• 1/4 in strip (P-2): 104 sheets, but strips instead of particles, for non-confidential internal paper.
• 1/8 x 1 1/2 in (P-4): 80 sheets, 16 fewer than this head, and the level auditors expect for personal data.
• Powerline 450.2 at 2 x 15 mm (P-5): the route to P-5, with 28 to 32 sheets and a 290 L bin; the FA 400.2 does not go beyond P-4.

Who it suits, and who should look elsewhere

Shared service centers, legal support teams, local government back offices, print operations destroying client proofs and hospital administration (non-clinical) fit this model. If a formal policy covers customer, employee or patient data, step up to the P-4 head. If nothing you shred is confidential, the strip-cut heads are faster.
