Is 5.8 x 50 mm really P-3? It sounds coarse.
Yes, and the arithmetic is checkable. DIN 66399 sets the P-3 limit at a particle area of 320 mm². A 5.8 x 50 mm particle is 290 mm², so it qualifies with about 9% to spare. It sits near the top of the band rather than in the middle of it, which is worth knowing if your policy is written in terms of particle area rather than P-level. HSM publishes this machine's full rating as E-2|O-2|P-3|T-3.
Is P-3 acceptable for customer or employee records?
Generally no. P-3 is the level normally specified for internal commercial confidentiality. For personal data — customer records, HR files, medical or financial information — the usual specification is P-4, and an auditor asked to sign off a destruction process for personal data will normally expect to see it. The same FA 400.2 chassis is built with a 3.9 x 40 mm P-4 head at 80 sheets a pass. That is the version to buy if compliance is the driver.
Why is this barely slower than the strip-cut version?
Because the particle is long. At 5.8 x 50 mm the cutting head is making the same longitudinal cuts as the 5.8 mm strip version and then adding a relatively infrequent cross break, so the extra work per sheet is small: 96 sheets against 104. Moving to the P-4 head at 3.9 x 40 mm is a bigger step, both because the strips are narrower and because the cross breaks are more frequent, which is why that version drops to 80 sheets.
Can I feed stapled files and CDs into it?
Yes. HSM rates this machine for paper, crumpled paper, continuous/computer paper, staples, paper clips, credit cards, CDs and diskettes, on induction-hardened solid steel rollers. In a central destruction station that matters more than it sounds — material arrives from multiple departments and pre-sorting fasteners out of it is the step that never actually happens. Ring binder mechanisms and large bulldog clips should still be removed.
How much paper does the 460 litre bin hold at this cut size?
A cross cut fragments the paper more than a strip cut, so it settles denser and the bin holds more sheets for the same volume. As an order of magnitude, a 460 litre container at P-3 will take somewhere in the region of 25,000 to 35,000 sheets, but real figures swing widely with paper stock and how much the shred is disturbed. Plan on emptying once per heavy shift and check it as a routine rather than waiting for an alarm.
What is the footprint and can our floor take it?
The machine is 1120 mm wide, 1568 mm deep and 1649 mm high — roughly 44 x 62 x 65 inches — and weighs 430 kg empty. Add clearance in front for feeding and behind or to the side for withdrawing the 460 litre container, and you want a bay of about 2 x 2.5 metres. It arrives on lockable castors so it can be positioned by two people, but check the delivery route: at 1.57 m deep it will not turn in a narrow corridor.
Does it need to cool down between batches?
No. This chassis is specified by HSM for continuous operation, which is the defining difference between the Powerline range and office shredders that quote a run-time and a rest-time. You can feed it for a full shift. The practical limits are the container filling, the cutting head needing its scheduled oiling, and the person doing the feeding.
Is this NSA approved?
No. NSA/CSS 02-01 requires a maximum particle size of 1 mm x 5 mm and requires the exact model to be listed on the NSA Evaluated Products List. At 5.8 x 50 mm this machine is nowhere near that specification, and no Powerline FA 400.2 variant is offered as an NSA-listed product. Treat any claim that a P-3 or P-4 machine is 'NSA approved' as a red flag on whichever site you read it.
