What is the practical difference between this and the 11.8 mm version?
Security level and throughput. This machine cuts a 5.8 mm strip and is rated DIN P-2 at 104 sheets a pass; the 11.8 mm version is P-1 at 144 sheets. Physically they are the same cabinet, same 428 mm intake, same 460 litre bin, same footprint. The narrower strip destroys more of each line of text and slows the machine down by roughly a quarter. If you are choosing between them, choose on whether P-1 would survive scrutiny in your organisation, not on speed.
Is P-2 enough for GDPR or HIPAA material?
No. P-2 permits particles up to 800 mm² and produces long strips that retain readable fragments. Guidance for personal data generally points to P-4, and P-3 is the usual floor for ordinary commercial confidentiality. If your shredding programme covers customer records, employee files, medical information or financial account data, specify the P-4 version of this same machine. We would rather move you up a model than have you fail an audit with the right brand and the wrong cutting head.
Can it shred stapled documents and CDs?
Yes. HSM rates this cutting head for paper, crumpled paper, continuous/computer paper, staples, paper clips, credit cards, CDs and diskettes. The cutting rollers are induction-hardened solid steel, which is what makes mixed-material feeding safe. Note that shredding a CD at P-2 destroys the disc but at a coarse optical-media rating; if optical media destruction is a formal requirement, check the O-level your policy demands rather than assuming paper P-2 covers it.
How many people can share one of these?
Realistically, a whole building. The FA 400.2 is a continuous-duty machine, not a duty-cycle machine that needs to cool down, so the limiting factor is how fast someone can carry paper to it and empty the bin, not the motor. HSM positions this chassis for archives and central destruction stations. If you have fewer than about 50 people and no records room, this is more machine than you need and a SECURIO office model will serve better.
How full does the bin get before it needs changing?
The container is 460 litres and rolls out on the cabinet base rather than lifting out, which is the only sensible design at this capacity. A strip cut fills a bin faster by volume than a particle cut does for the same number of sheets, because the shred is less fragmented and settles less densely. On sustained use expect to change it at least daily; on intermittent departmental use, weekly. There is no fill sensor quoted for this model, so build a check into the routine.
Does it need three-phase power?
Yes. HSM lists the EU article for this machine at 400 V / 50 Hz three-phase. North American installations are configured for 60 Hz at a different voltage, so treat the EU figure as an indication that this is a hard-wired three-phase machine rather than as your site specification. Confirm the exact supply with us before ordering, and budget for an electrician — this is not a plug-in shredder.
What maintenance does it need?
Cutting-head lubrication is the main routine task, and the machine has an integrated manual oiler so it is done from the front rather than with a spray can. HSM sells a special cutting oil for this purpose; ordinary lubricants are not a substitute and can gum the rollers. Beyond that, keep the bin from over-filling, keep the intake clear, and have the machine serviced on the interval your supplier specifies for continuous-duty use.
