Description

The 5.8 mm strip-cut Powerline FA 400.2 is the volume compromise in the range: 104 sheets a pass at DIN 66399 P-2, which is meaningfully more secure than the 11.8 mm version without giving up much speed. It suits a high-throughput destruction room handling internal paperwork that is not personal data.

P-2 allows particles up to 800 mm². A 5.8 mm strip narrows the readable fragment considerably compared with P-1 — you lose most of a line of text rather than keeping it — but it is still a strip, and a determined reconstruction of a single known page remains conceivable. Treat it as the level for commercially sensitive but non-personal material: draft specifications, internal costings, meeting notes, superseded procedures, engineering markups.

  • 428 mm (16.85") intake across the full width. Letter, legal and A3 all go in unfolded, landscape or portrait, and so do lever-arch files broken down flat. Nobody has to pre-trim anything.
  • 460 litre removable container. The bin rolls out of the cabinet rather than being lifted, which matters at this size — a full container of shredded paper is heavy enough that a lift-out design would be a manual-handling problem.
  • Continuous-duty motor. The FA 400.2 is built to run all day rather than in bursts. That is the difference between a departmental machine and a central shredding station, and it is the reason HSM positions this chassis for archives and records-destruction rooms.
  • Induction-hardened solid steel cutting rollers. Staples, paper clips and the odd credit card go through without a separate sorting step, which is what makes a central station practical — you cannot ask twelve departments to de-staple reliably.
  • Integrated manual oiler. Cutting-head lubrication is a scheduled task on a machine that runs at this duty, and the on-board oiler means it is done from the front panel rather than with an aerosol and a torch.
  • Storage table on top. Data carriers and stacks waiting to go in have somewhere to sit, which sounds trivial until you watch someone balance a box on a bin lid.
  • Mobile on lockable castors, with emergency stop. It can be repositioned by two people and locked in place, and the emergency-off switch is a requirement in most facilities that run a shared destruction room.

Compared to its siblings this variant is also the lightest at 425 kg, because the strip-cut head is simpler than the particle-cut assemblies. It makes no practical difference in use, but it does matter if you are checking a floor loading or a lift capacity before delivery.

Metric figures are HSM's published values for the equivalent EU article number; imperial figures are converted from those. Sheet capacity is quoted at 80 g/m² paper, which is HSM's per-model datasheet standard — HSM's overview brochure quotes the same machines at 70 g/m², which reads about 15% higher. Compare like with like when you benchmark against another brand.

Shredder bags and cutting oil are not included and are ordered separately as consumables. HSM lists reusable collection bags, special cutting oil, dust extraction, table extensions and collection trolleys as accessories for this chassis; we have not published a bag part number for the FA 400.2 because we could not verify one against HSM's own documentation. Ask us before you order bags rather than guessing from a smaller model's part number.

Who Should Buy This — and Who Should Not

This is the right machine for an organisation that destroys a lot of internal paper and wants better than bulk-reduction security without paying the throughput penalty of a particle cut. Manufacturing sites clearing drawing revisions, engineering offices, construction firms disposing of superseded plans, and back-office operations shredding non-personal working papers all fit the profile. At 104 sheets a pass it is close to the strip-cut speed of the P-1 machine and twice the effective security level.

Do not buy it if the paper contains personal data. Most data-protection guidance treats P-4 as the working minimum for personal data and P-3 as the floor for general commercial confidentiality; P-2 sits below both. The 5.8 x 50 mm P-3 version costs you eight sheets of capacity and crosses that line, and the 3.9 x 40 mm P-4 version is the one to specify if a policy or an auditor is involved. Going the other way, if security genuinely is not a concern and you only care about volume, the 11.8 mm P-1 version takes 144 sheets.

Do not buy any FA 400.2 for a general office floor. It is a 425 kg three-phase machine 1.57 m deep with a 61 dB(A) idle noise level. It wants a dedicated room.

What is the practical difference between this and the 11.8 mm version?

Security level and throughput. This machine cuts a 5.8 mm strip and is rated DIN P-2 at 104 sheets a pass; the 11.8 mm version is P-1 at 144 sheets. Physically they are the same cabinet, same 428 mm intake, same 460 litre bin, same footprint. The narrower strip destroys more of each line of text and slows the machine down by roughly a quarter. If you are choosing between them, choose on whether P-1 would survive scrutiny in your organisation, not on speed.

Is P-2 enough for GDPR or HIPAA material?

No. P-2 permits particles up to 800 mm² and produces long strips that retain readable fragments. Guidance for personal data generally points to P-4, and P-3 is the usual floor for ordinary commercial confidentiality. If your shredding programme covers customer records, employee files, medical information or financial account data, specify the P-4 version of this same machine. We would rather move you up a model than have you fail an audit with the right brand and the wrong cutting head.

Can it shred stapled documents and CDs?

Yes. HSM rates this cutting head for paper, crumpled paper, continuous/computer paper, staples, paper clips, credit cards, CDs and diskettes. The cutting rollers are induction-hardened solid steel, which is what makes mixed-material feeding safe. Note that shredding a CD at P-2 destroys the disc but at a coarse optical-media rating; if optical media destruction is a formal requirement, check the O-level your policy demands rather than assuming paper P-2 covers it.

How many people can share one of these?

Realistically, a whole building. The FA 400.2 is a continuous-duty machine, not a duty-cycle machine that needs to cool down, so the limiting factor is how fast someone can carry paper to it and empty the bin, not the motor. HSM positions this chassis for archives and central destruction stations. If you have fewer than about 50 people and no records room, this is more machine than you need and a SECURIO office model will serve better.

How full does the bin get before it needs changing?

The container is 460 litres and rolls out on the cabinet base rather than lifting out, which is the only sensible design at this capacity. A strip cut fills a bin faster by volume than a particle cut does for the same number of sheets, because the shred is less fragmented and settles less densely. On sustained use expect to change it at least daily; on intermittent departmental use, weekly. There is no fill sensor quoted for this model, so build a check into the routine.

Does it need three-phase power?

Yes. HSM lists the EU article for this machine at 400 V / 50 Hz three-phase. North American installations are configured for 60 Hz at a different voltage, so treat the EU figure as an indication that this is a hard-wired three-phase machine rather than as your site specification. Confirm the exact supply with us before ordering, and budget for an electrician — this is not a plug-in shredder.

What maintenance does it need?

Cutting-head lubrication is the main routine task, and the machine has an integrated manual oiler so it is done from the front rather than with a spray can. HSM sells a special cutting oil for this purpose; ordinary lubricants are not a substitute and can gum the rollers. Beyond that, keep the bin from over-filling, keep the intake clear, and have the machine serviced on the interval your supplier specifies for continuous-duty use.
