Description

The ecoChip is the ProfiPack that makes loose fill instead of mats. Where the C400 and P425 perforate a sheet of used cardboard so it opens into a flexible pad, the ecoChip cuts it into chips roughly 10.5 mm wide and 40 to 200 mm long — material you pour around an awkward object rather than wrap over a flat one.

That is the entire reason to choose it. If your goods are boxed rectangles, a mat is better and cheaper to make. If they are bottles, castings, instruments, ceramics or anything with a shape that a sheet will not follow, chips fill the voids the way bought loose fill does, out of cardboard you already have. This article is supplied with the adapter set for connecting a vacuum cleaner or dust extractor, which is worth having because chipping throws considerably more dust than perforating does.

What's in the Box

The ecoChip machine and the adapter set for connecting a vacuum cleaner or dust-extraction unit. The extractor or vacuum itself is not included — the adapter is the interface, not the suction. HSM's DE 1-8 is the matched extraction system if you want one specified rather than improvised. No collection hopper or bagging system is supplied; plan where the chips are going to land.

Who Should Buy This — and Who Should Not

Buy the ecoChip if what you ship does not lie flat. Wine and spirits, glassware, ceramics, castings, laboratory instruments, spare parts of varying shapes — these are packed by pouring fill around the item, and a perforated mat is a poor substitute. Making that fill from inbound cartons removes both a waste-disposal cost and a purchased-consumable cost, and the machine plugs into an ordinary outlet.

Do not buy it for flat, boxed, uniform goods. For those the single-phase ProfiPack P425 makes mats faster (120 kg/h on its three-phase sibling, 80 kg/h single phase) and mats are quicker to apply than loose fill when the shape is predictable. For one low-volume bench, the benchtop C400 is the proportionate machine.

Two honest limitations. First, chips are messier than mats in every part of the process — making them, storing them, dispensing them, and at the customer's end unpacking them. Budget for a hopper and accept some sweeping. Second, cardboard chips are heavier and less springy than expanded plastic loose fill; they protect by filling and bracing rather than by cushioning, so for genuinely fragile items you may still want a wrap layer underneath.

What size are the chips?

Roughly 10.5 mm wide and between 40 and 200 mm long, per HSM's ProfiPack product overview. That is a coarse, fairly rigid fill rather than a fluffy one: it braces an item inside a carton and fills voids rather than cushioning by compression. If you need soft cushioning against impact as well, a wrap layer under the fill is still worth using.

Does the vacuum come with it?

No. This article is supplied with the adapter set that lets you connect a vacuum cleaner or a dust-extraction unit; the suction unit itself is a separate purchase. HSM's matched extraction system is the DE 1-8. Chipping cardboard produces noticeably more airborne dust than perforating it, so plan for some form of extraction rather than treating it as an optional extra.

Can it run on a normal socket?

Yes. The ecoChip draws 1,870 W at 100-240 V, 50 or 60 Hz, single phase, so it needs a socket on a circuit that can carry the load but no three-phase installation and no electrician. That puts it in the same electrical class as the single-phase P425, which is useful if the packing area is in a leased unit with limited power.

How is it different from a ProfiPack P425?

Output form, mainly. Both take a 425 mm intake, up to three layers and 20 mm of infeed height, and both run 1,870 W single phase in this configuration. The P425 perforates cardboard into a flexible mat at up to 80 kg/h; the ecoChip cuts it into loose chips at up to 100 kg/h. The ecoChip is also a slightly larger and heavier machine at 769 x 698 x 1035 mm and 171.5 kg.

Where do the chips go when they come out?

Wherever you put a container. HSM does not supply a hopper, bagging system or dispenser with the machine, so most users park a mesh cage, a wheeled tote or a large bin under the outlet and fill it. Chips take up a lot of volume relative to their weight, so at 100 kg/h you will need somewhere sensible to store a day's production, not just a bin next to the bench.
