Description

The SP 5088 takes the same FA 500.3 cutting head as the SP 5080 and puts a larger KP 88.1 press behind it: 85 kN instead of 80, bales of 500 × 500 × 950 mm weighing up to 90 kg instead of 80. What you pay for that is length. At 3281 mm deep and 1660 kg, this is a materially bigger installation than the SP 5080 for the same shredding performance, and the case for it is made almost entirely on the baling side.

What's in the Box

The SP 5088 arrives as a palletised industrial installation and HSM publishes no packing list for it. Freight, rigging, the three-phase electrical connection, optional dust extraction and the strapping consumables for tying 950 mm bales are all separate from the machine price.

Who Should Buy This — and Who Should Not

The SP 5088 makes sense when the economics of the outgoing bale, not the incoming paper, drive the decision. A 90 kg bale at 500 × 500 × 950 mm loads a trailer more efficiently than an 80 kg bale at 570 × 490 × 800 mm, and for a destruction operation shipping several loads a week that difference compounds. Buyers are typically commercial shredding businesses and large records centres with a dedicated bay and a forklift.

For everyone else, the SP 5080 at the same 6 × 40–53 mm cut is the better buy. Shredding performance is identical — same head, same 500 mm conveyor, same 300–350 sheets, same 11.5 kW drive — but it is 807 mm shorter and 310 kg lighter. That 807 mm is often the difference between fitting in an existing waste bay and rebuilding one.

Note also the security ceiling. This variant is P-3, which suits general commercial-confidential paper but not personal data under a formal policy. HSM does build the SP 5088 with finer heads, but if you need P-4 or P-5 and want to buy from stock here, the SP 5080 at 3.9 × 40 mm (P-4) and the SP 5080 at 1.9 × 15 mm (P-5) are the practical routes.

One point in the SP 5088's favour that is easy to miss: because the cutting head is the same FA 500.3 assembly used across this whole family, the wear parts, the automatic oiler and the service procedure are shared with the SP 5080 and the standalone FA 500.3. A site running more than one Powerline machine can hold a single set of spares and train operators once, which is a genuine consideration for a commercial destruction operation with several machines on the floor.

What is the real difference between the SP 5088 and the SP 5080?

The baler, not the shredder. Both use the same FA 500.3 cutting head, the same 500 mm conveyor intake and the same 11.5 kW drive, so at 6 x 40-53 mm both do 300-350 sheets a pass at P-3. The SP 5088 fits a KP 88.1 press at 85 kN making 500 x 500 x 950 mm bales up to 90 kg, against 80 kN and 570 x 490 x 800 mm bales up to 80 kg. It is also 807 mm deeper and 310 kg heavier.

HSM's US page lists 115 hp and a 90 lb bale. Are those correct?

No. HSM's US site displays the European metric figures under imperial unit labels for this product line. The drive is 11.5 kW, not 115 hp; the maximum bale weight is 90 kg, not 90 lb; the intake is 500 mm, not 500 inches; and the machine weighs 1660 kg. Every number on this page is taken from HSM's European datasheet and converted by us, which is why it will not match their US listing.

Is P-3 sufficient for our documents?

For general commercial-confidential paper, yes: 240 mm2 particles sit well inside the 320 mm2 that DIN 66399 permits for P-3. For personal data under a formal privacy programme, usually not, because most such programmes name P-4. If that describes you, the SP 5080 at 3.9 x 40 mm reaches P-4 on the same conveyor and press arrangement, at 180-200 sheets a pass.

What space do I need for it?

1273 mm wide, 3281 mm deep and 1792 mm high, plus clearance to load the conveyor at one end and extract a 950 mm bale at the other. The depth is the figure that catches people out: at 3.28 metres before working space, this needs a bay rather than a corner. It weighs 1660 kg, so floor loading and the delivery route both need checking in advance.

Do I need a forklift?

Realistically, yes. A finished bale is 950 mm long and can weigh 90 kg, which is beyond safe manual handling. You need a pallet truck or forklift and somewhere to stage bales for collection. Sites without mechanical handling should not buy an SP 5088; the SP 4040 V produces 35 kg bales that two people can lift, though at a much lower sheet capacity.

Can it run continuously through a full shift?

It is built for it. HSM designs the Powerline range for continuous operation rather than a duty cycle, and the automatic oiler keeps the cutting rollers lubricated without an operator task. The practical limits are how quickly material reaches the 500 mm belt, and the pause while a completed 950 mm bale is strapped and removed from the press.
