Is a P-5 machine the same as NSA approved?
No, and the distinction matters if you are buying for government work. P-5 is a DIN 66399 / ISO IEC 21964 classification based on particle area, capped at 30 mm2. NSA/CSS 02-01 requires a maximum particle of 1 x 5 mm and requires the specific model to appear on the NSA Evaluated Products List. At 1.9 x 15 mm this machine is outside the NSA particle limit and it is not EPL listed.
Why is this version more powerful and heavier than the other SP 5080 models?
The finer cutting head engages far more edges at once and meets more resistance, so HSM fits a 13.5 kW drive instead of 11.5 kW and the machine comes out at 1480 kg rather than 1350 kg. Both differences matter at installation: the extra 130 kg affects floor loading and rigging, and the larger motor affects the electrical supply you need to provide.
How much throughput do I give up against the P-4 version?
About half. This machine takes 90-100 sheets a pass against 180-200 for the 3.9 x 40 mm P-4 version, both at 80 g/m2. Against the P-2 version at 510-550 sheets, it is roughly one fifth the speed. Since the conveyor, the press and the footprint are otherwise the same, the security level is the only thing you are buying with that throughput.
What bale weight should I plan for?
We can confirm the bale dimensions of 570 x 490 x 800 mm and that HSM quotes a 40 to 80 kg range across the SP 5080 family, but we have not been able to verify a figure specific to the 1.9 x 15 mm variant, and finely cut paper does not compact identically to coarse shred. Ask us to confirm with HSM before you plan your handling around a number.
Can it destroy optical media and microform to a rated level?
Yes, and to the highest ratings in the Powerline range: E-4 for electronic data carriers, O-4 for optical media, F-2 for film and T-5 for hard-copy microform, alongside P-5 for paper. HSM lists CDs and DVDs, floppy disks, credit cards and USB sticks as shreddable. If you have a mixed high-security stream, this avoids running a separate media destroyer.
What supply and site preparation does it need?
Three-phase power for a 13.5 kW drive: 208 V / 60 Hz in the North American configuration, against 400 V / 50 Hz on HSM's European datasheet for the equivalent article. This is the largest motor in the batch, so confirm the available supply capacity, not just the voltage. Physically: 1267 x 2474 x 1792 mm, 1480 kg, loading clearance at the conveyor end, bale clearance at the press end, and a delivery route surveyed for the weight.
