Description

The Momentum X22-23 is the mid-size cabinet in ACCO's Momentum range and the one most small departments should look at: 22 sheets a pass at DIN 66399 P-4, into a 23-gallon bin on castors.

What distinguishes it from the X18-12 below it is bin capacity rather than cutting power. The two machines are within four sheets of each other, but the X22-23 nearly doubles the container. For a shared machine that is usually the specification that decides whether people keep using it, because the emptying is what they notice.

Key Features

  • Twenty-two sheets per pass on 20 lb paper at DIN 66399 P-4.
  • Super cross-cut head at approximately 5/32 x 1 3/8 in (about 4 x 35 mm, roughly 138 mm² per particle).
  • 23-gallon bin on castors — nearly twice the X18-12 — so the whole machine rolls rather than the bin being lifted out.
  • Shreds CDs, credit cards, paper clips, staples and unopened junk mail alongside paper.
  • Active Sensing Anti-Jam Technology, which prevents an overload rather than recovering from one.
  • Runs continuously until the bin is full rather than to a fixed on/off cycle.
  • Auto sleep mode for standby power.
  • TAA compliant, 79.4 lb, two-year warranty.

A word on the anti-jam claim, because every shredder brand makes one. ACCO's approach measures the thickness of the stack at the throat and refuses a load that is too thick, rather than letting the cutters bind and then reversing. It is a narrower promise than jam-proof, and it is the more useful one: it means the failure mode is the machine declining to start on an over-large handful, which takes five seconds to fix, instead of a stalled head that has to be cleared.

ACCO does not publish a decibel rating or a motor wattage for any Momentum model, describing the range only as ultra-quiet, so those rows are omitted rather than filled with an unsourced number. Sheet capacity is quoted on 20 lb paper, which is ACCO's stated basis for this range.

What's in the Box

Shredder on its 23-gallon castered bin, with power cord and operating instructions. Bags and oil are separate. ACCO's published bag sizes step from 13-19 gallon (part 1765010) to 30 gallon (part 1765015), and the manufacturer does not list this model against either, so we have not named a part. Shredder oil is part 1760049.

Who Should Buy This — and Who Should Not

Buy the X22-23 for a department of six to ten people who need one machine to take everything: paper, expired cards, old discs and junk mail that arrives with names on it. The 23-gallon bin means emptying is a weekly job rather than a daily one, the machine rolls to where it is needed, and P-4 is the level ordinarily specified for confidential business records.

Do not buy it if your paper is wider than letter. The 9-inch throat will not take ledger or A3, and the X26-32 with a 12-inch throat, 26 sheets a pass and a 32-gallon bin is the model for that. Do not buy it if a policy names P-5 or micro-cut in the DIN sense — the M12-12 and M20-32 are the micro-cut options, at 12 and 20 sheets respectively. And if the room only holds two or three people, this is more cabinet than you need; the X20-07 is the deskside answer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can it shred CDs, credit cards and staples?

Yes to all of them, plus paper clips and unopened junk mail — ACCO lists the full set for this model. Feed optical discs singly rather than in a stack. It will not take laminated pouches, adhesive labels, continuous form paper or cardboard, and those are the materials most likely to damage a cutting head.

How often will the 23-gallon bin need emptying?

Roughly every 500 to 800 sheets of cross-cut waste, with real variation depending on paper type and how the shred settles. For a department of eight or so on normal correspondence volumes that is usually a weekly job. The bin sits on castors, so moving the machine to a waste point is easier than carrying a container to it.

Will legal paper fit?

Yes. The 9-inch throat clears US legal at 8.5 inches and A4 at 8.27 inches with the sheet fed flat, so nothing has to be folded. Ledger at 11 inches and A3 at 11.7 inches will not fit; those need the 12-inch throat on the X26-32 or M20-32.

What is the duty cycle?

ACCO rates the Momentum range to run continuously until the waste bin is full rather than publishing a fixed on/off cycle. With a 23-gallon container that is a substantial working session. It is still sensible to let the machine rest after a long clear-out, as you would with any motor.

What bags fit it?

We cannot give you a part number with confidence, and would rather say so than guess. ACCO's published bag sizes are 6-8 gallon (1765016), 13-19 gallon (1765010), 30 gallon (1765015) and 35-60 gallon (1145482), and none of the compatibility lists names the X22-23. The 13-19 gallon bag is undersized for a 23-gallon bin and the 30 gallon may be loose. Ask us before ordering a case.

Is P-4 enough for personal data?

For most ordinary business records, yes — P-4 is the standard commercial level and a 4 x 35 mm particle is not reconstructable by hand in any practical sense. Where regulation, a client contract or an internal policy specifies P-5, it is not, and the M12-12 or M20-32 are the machines that answer that requirement in this range.

Is this NSA approved?

No. NSA/CSS 02-01 requires a maximum 1 mm x 5 mm particle and requires the specific model to be listed on the NSA Evaluated Products List. A P-4 super cross-cut meets neither condition, and no Momentum model is listed. TAA compliance, which this machine has, is a separate matter entirely.
