Description

At 29.5 HP the HSM VK 5012 becomes a production machine: HSM publishes a theoretical idle throughput of 223 m³/h and 11.16 tonnes an hour on material at 50 kg/m³, with a 16.6 second idle cycle. The press itself is unchanged from the 20.12 HP version — 500 kN, a 1,020 x 1,250 mm aperture, four wires and an 1,100 x 750 mm mill bale — but this is the drive HSM actually quotes performance figures for.

The VK 5012 is built for materials recovery work: big bags, HDPE and LDPE containers, plastic bottles, film, punch waste, mixed paper and cardboard, fed continuously from a belt or an air conveying system and baled without an operator at the machine. Bale length is set anywhere from 600 to 1,200 mm and finished bales weigh between 300 and 550 kg depending on material.

Physically it is identical to its smaller-drive sibling: 8,990 mm long, 3,990 mm wide, 3,000 mm high, 17,500 kg. What you are buying with the extra 7 kW is the ability to run that chamber continuously instead of intermittently.

What's in the Box

HSM publishes no scope-of-delivery list for the VK range. The press arrives to be positioned, levelled, connected to a three-phase supply and commissioned by an engineer. Feed conveyors, hoppers, platforms, guarding and bale handling equipment are quoted separately against your site.

Wire is not included. Tying uses 3.4 mm baling wire on 40 kg rolls, four ties per bale. Order the first pallet of wire with the machine so that commissioning is not held up by a consumable.

Who Should Buy This — and Who Should Not

Buy the 29.5 HP VK 5012 if the press has to run through a shift rather than in bursts: a materials recovery facility, a plastics reprocessor, a large retail distribution centre consolidating film and OCC. 11.16 t/h at 50 kg/m³ is a genuine production rate, and it is a published figure rather than an estimate.

Buy the 20.12 HP VK 5012 instead if volumes are moderate. Same press, same bale, same footprint, lower connected load and lower cost. HSM does not publish throughput figures for that variant, which is a reasonable signal that it is not the one intended for heavy duty.

Consider the 30 kW or 45 kW VK 5012 if even this is not enough — HSM builds the same frame with both. The 30 kW version is published at 308 m³/h and a 12 second cycle. Ask us if you want that variant quoted; it is not a stock configuration.

Move up to a VK 12018 if you need bales heavier than 550 kg or wider than 1,100 x 750 mm. The 12018 makes an 1,100 x 1,100 mm bale up to 1,100 kg with five wires, at 1,200 kN. It is roughly twice the machine in every dimension, including the installation cost.

What throughput does HSM actually publish for this machine?

Three figures, all from HSM's datasheet: 223 m³/h in idle operation (theoretical), 4.47 t/h on material with a bulk density of 20 kg/m³, and 11.16 t/h at 50 kg/m³. The idle cycle time is 16.6 seconds. Use the tonnage figures when sizing against a waste contract; the volumetric figure assumes the chamber is being fed continuously with nothing in the way.

How much faster is it than the 20.12 HP version?

HSM does not publish throughput or cycle time for the 15 kW VK 5012, so an exact ratio would be invented. What is certain is that the press, the chamber, the aperture and the bale are identical, and the difference is entirely pump speed. If you need a firm comparison for a capital case, ask HSM for the 15 kW cycle time in writing; we would rather leave the gap visible than fill it with a guess.

What does a full bale weigh and how do I move it?

Between 300 and 550 kg, at 1,100 x 750 mm in cross-section and 600 to 1,200 mm long. That needs a counterbalance forklift or a bale clamp, and a flat area with room to stack. HSM's model overview also quotes a headline maximum bale weight of 480 kg for the VK 5012; the detailed datasheet gives the 300–550 kg range. The difference is material dependence, not a contradiction.

Can it handle big bags and bottles at this speed?

Yes, that is what the machine is for. HSM lists HDPE and LDPE hollow containers, plastic bottles, big bags, plastic film, punch waste, mixed paper and cardboard. The 1,020 x 1,250 mm aperture swallows big bags whole and the four wire ties hold rigid containers against springback. What matters more than the drive rating is whether your feed system delivers a consistent stream rather than surges.

What is the installation like?

Substantial. The press is 8,990 mm long, 3,990 mm wide and 3,000 mm tall and weighs 17,500 kg empty, and it needs rigging, levelling, a three-phase connection and commissioning by an HSM engineer. Add feed conveyor, discharge run-off and maintenance access on at least one side. Budget for the installation as a separate project line, not as delivery.

Is 480 V correct, or is this a 400 V machine?

The US article data lists 480 V / 60 Hz three phase and that is what we publish. HSM's European datasheet for the same press lists 400 V / 50 Hz, and HSM offers 380 V / 60 Hz on request. For plant of this size the electrical arrangement is confirmed at order stage against your site supply, so treat the listed figure as the expected configuration and get it confirmed in writing.
