How big is a VK 5012 bale, and why does that matter?
The cross-section is 1,100 x 750 mm and the length is adjustable between 600 and 1,200 mm, giving bales of 300 to 550 kg depending on material. The 1,100 mm width is the format most paper mills and plastics reprocessors are set up to handle, which usually means a better price per tonne and better trailer utilisation than the 700 x 500 mm bales HSM's smaller VK presses make.
What throughput should I plan for?
HSM does not publish throughput or cycle time for the 15 kW VK 5012, so we are not going to estimate one. For reference, the 22 kW version of the same press is published at 223 m³/h idle, 4.47 t/h at 20 kg/m³ and 11.16 t/h at 50 kg/m³. This machine will be slower than that. If throughput is central to your decision, ask HSM for the figure in writing before ordering.
Can it bale big bags and rigid plastic containers?
Yes. HSM lists HDPE and LDPE hollow containers and plastic bottles, big bags, plastic film, punch waste and residue, mixed paper and cardboard for the VK 5012. The 1,020 x 1,250 mm aperture is the reason: big bags go in whole rather than being cut. Rigid containers spring back hard, which is what the four wires and the 500 kN press are there to deal with.
How much space and what foundation does it need?
The press alone is 8,990 mm long, 3,990 mm wide and 3,000 mm high, and weighs 17,500 kg empty. On top of that you need feed access above the aperture, run-off at the discharge end for a 550 kg bale, and maintenance access down at least one side. The floor loading needs checking by someone qualified — this is not a machine you set down on a thin slab.
What wire does it use?
3.4 mm baling wire, supplied on 40 kg rolls, four ties per bale. Wire is not included with the machine. Because wire consumption scales with the number of bales rather than the tonnage, running longer bales where your recycler allows it is the simplest way to reduce the cost per tonne.
Is the published length of 8,990 mm reliable?
It is HSM's own figure and it appears on two independent HSM datasheets for this press. One caveat worth stating: the US article sheet for this SKU gives an overall length of 8,861 mm, about 130 mm shorter. Both figures come from HSM. If your bay length is within 200 mm of critical, get the dimension confirmed on the order acknowledgement rather than trusting either number.
Does the frequency-regulated drive option make sense?
It can. HSM offers frequency-regulated drives across the VK range and states an energy saving of around 40% against a fixed-speed motor of the same rating, because the pump does not run at full speed through the whole cycle. Whether that pays back depends on your electricity tariff and your running hours. It is an order-time option, not a retrofit, so decide before the machine is built.
