How does this compare with the other two VK 12018 drives?
Only in speed and weight. All three press at 1,200 kN into the same 1,100 x 1,100 mm chamber with five wires. HSM publishes idle cycle times of 15.5 s for 45+45 kW, 11.3 s for 55+55 kW and 9.4 s for 75+75 kW, with idle throughputs of 506, 692 and 837 m³/h. The 45+45 and 55+55 machines weigh 38,000 kg; the 75+75 machine weighs 36,000 kg.
Why does the smaller-motor machine weigh more than the biggest one?
Because the hydraulic and drive arrangement differs, not because the frame is heavier. HSM's own data gives 38 tonnes for both the 45+45 kW and 55+55 kW machines and 36 tonnes for the 75+75 kW machine, and the same figures appear in the article data for these three SKUs. It looks wrong at first glance and it is not; if floor loading is critical, work to the 38 tonne figure.
How long can the bales be?
Between 600 and 2,000 mm, set on the control, at a fixed 1,100 x 1,100 mm cross-section. That is double the maximum length of HSM's smaller channel presses. Long bales use fewer wire ties per tonne and fill a trailer more efficiently, but they are harder to handle and not every buyer wants them. Confirm the format with your recycler before you commission the machine.
What sort of feed does it need?
A wide, continuous one. The 970 x 1,800 mm aperture is designed to take material from a full-width sorting belt or an air conveying system, and the light-barrier control expects a steady stream. A VK 12018 fed intermittently is an extremely expensive way to make occasional bales. If your feed is a shredder discharge or a single sorting station, the VK 5012 is the more honest match.
Is a frequency-regulated drive worth specifying?
It can be. HSM offers the VK 12018 with frequency-controlled drives and publishes a 45+45 kW frequency-controlled configuration at a 10 second cycle and 786 m³/h — close to the fixed-speed 75+75 kW machine's output on far less installed power. HSM quotes an energy saving of around 40%. It is an order-time option and cannot be retrofitted, so model the payback before the machine is built.
What safety and control equipment is fitted?
A Siemens programmable logic controller with a touch panel handles material recipes, cycle control and fault reporting, and a castle-lock system secures access points so the press cannot be started with a guard open. HSM also offers wear-resistant steel in the chamber as an option for abrasive residual waste. Site guarding around the feed and discharge is specified separately as part of the installation.
What is the warranty?
HSM does not publish a standard warranty term for its baling presses and we will not state one we cannot verify. On capital plant of this size the warranty, the commissioning scope and any service agreement are negotiated and written into the order documents. Ask for all three in writing at the quotation stage rather than assuming a catalogue term applies.
