Description

This is the coiled strapping wire for HSM's smaller VK channel balers — 2.8 mm diameter steel, 800 metres to the coil, supplied as HSM article 6652993500 and rated for the VK 12, VK 23, VK 30 and VK 42. It is the only wire gauge HSM lists for those four machines, so specifying it is a matter of confirming your model, not comparing options.

Compatible Models

  • HSM VK 12
  • HSM VK 23
  • HSM VK 30
  • HSM VK 42

Larger VK balers take heavier wire and this coil will not serve them: the VK 40 and VK 48 use 3.1 mm wire (article 6661993100), and the VK 50, VK 60, VK 62, VK 72, VK 88, VK 120 and VK 150 use 3.4 mm wire (article 6661993110). Fitting undersized wire to a bigger channel baler risks strap failure on a bale that may weigh several hundred kilograms.

Keep at least one spare coil on the shelf. A channel baler that runs out of wire mid-bale has to be cleared by hand, and on a VK that is a job measured in hours rather than minutes.

Wire is bought by weight and consumed by length, so track both. HSM publishes a wire length of 800 m and designates the coil 40 kg; use the length figure when you are estimating how many bales a coil will tie, and the weight figure when you are planning storage and lifting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this wire fit my VK 40 or VK 48?

No. The VK 40 and VK 48 take 3.1 mm wire, HSM article 6661993100. This coil is 2.8 mm and HSM lists it only for the VK 12, VK 23, VK 30 and VK 42. The difference is not cosmetic: a channel baler's twister head is set up for a specific wire gauge, and running thin wire through it produces unreliable knots on bales heavy enough to injure someone if a strap lets go.

How much wire is on a coil?

HSM publishes 800 metres (800,000 mm) of 2.8 mm wire per coil, and designates the coil 40 kg. Both figures come straight from HSM's article data. To estimate coil life, measure the wire consumed per bale on your machine — bale girth plus twist allowance, multiplied by the number of straps — and divide 800 m by that. Storage note: 40 kg is a two-person lift or a hoist job, not something to wrestle onto a rack alone.

What is the EAN for this coil?

4026631046800, as published by HSM against article 6652993500. Quote either the EAN or the HSM article number when reordering. Retailer part numbers for HSM consumables vary and the descriptive title alone (“2.8 mm strapping wire”) is not specific enough — several HSM wires share a diameter but differ in length, coil weight or intended machine.

Can I use a generic 2.8 mm baling wire?

Sometimes, but do it with your eyes open. Baling wire varies in tensile grade, ductility and surface finish, and a channel baler's twister is sensitive to all three: wire that is too hard snaps at the twist, wire that is too soft unwinds under load. HSM does not publish a tensile grade for this article, so you cannot match a generic wire against the specification on paper. If you do trial an alternative, test it on production bales before switching your standing order.

Is this the same wire as the pre-looped wire for the V-Press machines?

No, and the two are not interchangeable. The V-Press vertical presses use pre-looped eyelet wire cut to a fixed length — for example 2.8 x 3700 mm (article 6135993002) for the V-Press 860 — supplied in 10 kg bundles. This article is continuous coiled wire for the VK horizontal channel balers, which cut and twist it automatically. Same 2.8 mm diameter, entirely different product.
