Why can't I just shred SSDs in a normal drive shredder?
Because an SSD stores data in discrete NAND flash packages soldered to a board, and a shredder that produces large fragments can leave one of those packages whole. A whole NAND package is, in principle, readable by a specialist laboratory. Disintegration to particle size removes the packages themselves, which is why high-assurance standards for solid state media specify particle dimensions rather than simply requiring the device to be broken.
Is the Kobra SSD NSA approved?
Kobra states that the Kobra SSD is approved by the NSA and meets the requirements of the NSA/CSS specification for solid state device destruction. We have not independently inspected the current Evaluated Products List entry, and NSA approval always attaches to a specific model and configuration on a specific EPL edition. If you are destroying US classified media, check the current EPL yourself and keep a copy with your accreditation paperwork rather than relying on any vendor's summary, including ours.
What does E-7 mean, and is there an E-8?
DIN 66399 defines separate scales for different material classes: P for paper, O for optical media, T for magnetic media, E for electronic media, H for hard drives. E-7 is the highest electronic media level, matching P-7 on the paper scale at a maximum particle area of 5 mm². There is no level 8 on any of these scales. Kobra describes this machine's output as similar to O-7, T-7 and E-7.
What can and cannot go into it?
In: solid state drives and enterprise SSDs, SIM cards, USB and flash drives, circuit boards, cell phones, tablets, memory and CPU chips containing internal ROM or flash, and optical discs. Out: paper, and anything that will not pass a 240 x 25 mm throat. Lithium batteries in phones and tablets need particular care and should be handled according to your own safety procedure before destruction — a damaged cell is a fire risk in any cutting chamber.
How fast is it in practice?
Up to about 90 lb (40 kg) per hour, and that figure moves with the screen fitted — finer particles mean more time in the chamber. Compared with a drive shredder this is slow, and it is meant to be: you are buying particle size, not throughput. Organisations with mixed estates typically route bulk spinning disks to a shredder such as the Kobra HDD and reserve this machine for solid state and high-assurance work.
What are the installation requirements?
208 V three-phase power at 50 amps per phase for the 5 kW motor, a 41 x 32 in footprint, and a floor able to carry roughly 1,250 lb. Noise is 50 dB(A) at idle and 60 to 70 dB(A) under load depending on the material, so a dedicated room is sensible — though as with any destruction equipment, the stronger reason for a controlled room is that media awaiting destruction is still live data.
Will it also destroy CDs and DVDs?
Yes, optical discs are on Kobra's material list for this machine and the output is rated similar to O-7, the highest optical media level in DIN 66399. If discs are the bulk of your work, though, this is a very expensive way to destroy them; a machine rated for optical media at a lower level, or the Kobra HDD unit, will handle routine disc destruction far more economically.
