Kobra 240 SS5

The KOBRA 240 SS5 is the volume model of the standard-speed 240 strip cuts. Its 1/4 inch strip is the widest in the family, which means less cutting work per sheet and the highest per-pass rating of the non-Turbo models: up to 29 sheets at 22 ft/min. If the job is clearing out old files rather than protecting sensitive ones, the SS5 gets through the box fastest. The wide strip keeps it at P-2, the same level as the finer-cutting SS4, so there is no security penalty for choosing it over its sibling.

Key Features

• Highest per-pass rating without the Turbo gearing. Up to 29 sheets at the full 22 ft/min feed speed, against 26 on the KOBRA 240 SS4. The wider strip is easier to produce, so more sheets fit in the same duty.
• Same P-2 level as the SS4. Both are rated P-2 O-2 T-2 E-2 under ISO/IEC 21964 (DIN 66399). DIN's strip criterion is width based and both the 3.2 mm and 6 mm strips fall in the same band, so the SS5's wider cut costs nothing in classification.
• Optical media and cards. CDs, DVDs, floppy disks, credit cards and chip cards are all covered, with KOBRA's separator keeping plastic fragments out of the paper in the bin.
• No consumables. No bags required, no oil required. The 9.5 gallon bin pulls out of the cabinet without lifting the cutting head.
• Continuous duty. 3/4 HP motor rated for 24 hour operation with thermal protection, running through a heavy duty chain drive with metal gears.
• Energy Smart System. Illuminated status indicators, electronic-eye automatic start and stop, power-saving standby, and a safety stop that cuts the head when the bin is removed.

Who Should Buy This — and Who Should Not

The SS5 makes sense where the work is bulk paper disposal — expired records, superseded print runs, day-to-day general office paper — and the security requirement is simply that documents should not be readable in the recycling. At 33 lb and 55 dB(A) it fits under a desk in an open-plan floor.

Choose the KOBRA 240 SS4 instead if you would rather have a finer 1/8 inch strip and can live with 26 sheets. Choose the KOBRA 240 SS5 Turbo if users feed thick, untidy handfuls: it takes up to 52 sheets, though at 8 ft/min instead of 22.

Do not buy the SS5 for regulated personal data. A 1/4 inch strip is the coarsest cut in the range and P-2 is the lowest level most policies will accept for anything. If you handle HR files, patient records or financial data, move to a particle cut: the KOBRA 240.1 C4 at P-4, the 240.1 C2 at P-5, or the KOBRA 240 HS at P-6.
