Kobra 240 SS4 Turbo

The Kobra 240 SS4 Turbo is a P-2 strip-cut shredder geared for bigger stacks: it accepts up to 30 sheets per pass and cuts them into 1/8 in (approx. 3.2 mm) strips. Kobra rates its feed at 8 ft/min, slower than the standard 240 SS4, in exchange for more tolerance of thick handfuls. It suits busy shared spaces where people feed whatever they are holding and a jam-prone shredder costs more time than a slightly slower one.

Stack size over speed: how the SS4 Turbo is geared

"Turbo" here does not mean faster paper travel. Compared with the standard 240 SS4, this version accepts four more sheets per bite, 30 versus 26, and moves them at 8 ft/min instead of 22 ft/min. The practical effect is margin. When a colleague drops in a thick folder without counting, the Turbo is more likely to take it in one go instead of stalling and reversing. In a mailroom, reception or shared copy area, fewer interruptions often matter more than raw feed speed.

If one careful person feeds tidy stacks for an hour, though, the standard SS4 will usually finish first. Choose based on how the machine will actually be used.

Security and media on the SS4 Turbo

The cut and rating are unchanged from the standard model: 1/8 in strips at P-2, with O-2 for optical discs, T-2 for cards and E-2 for electronic media. That covers general office paper, superseded drafts and expired cards, but not personal or financial data that a policy expects to see cross-cut. A separator in the cabinet keeps disc and card fragments out of the shredded paper.

Built for steady use

A 3/4 HP motor with thermal protection runs continuously for 24 hours, driving the knives through a heavy-duty chain with metal gears. The carbon-hardened cutters handle staples and paper clips, though binder hardware should come off first. Electronic-eye start and stop, illuminated Energy Smart standby and a stop that cuts the head when the bin is pulled out round it off. The bin needs no liner and empties straight into recycling, and the strip head needs no oil.

• Kobra 240 SS5 Turbo: a wider 1/4 in (6 mm) strip and up to 52 sheets, if stack size is the top priority.

The right buyer for the SS4 Turbo

Pick it for a high-traffic shared shredder where nobody counts sheets. Pass on it if a single person does archive clearance, where the standard SS4 is quicker, or if your documents need P-3 or above.
