Description

The KOBRA 240 SS4 Turbo is the standard 240 SS4 re-geared for stack size rather than speed. Same 1/8 inch strip, same P-2 rating, same 9.5 gallon bin and 33 lb cabinet — but KOBRA rates it at up to 30 sheets per pass and 8 ft/min, where the standard SS4 does 26 sheets at 22 ft/min. That is the entire proposition: it swallows what users actually hand it. Offices where a shredder jams every week usually have a feeding problem, not a shredder problem, and the Turbo gearing is the direct answer to it.

Key Features

  • Geared for thick handfuls. Up to 30 sheets per pass. The lower 8 ft/min feed speed is the trade: more torque available per sheet, less distance covered per minute.
  • Identical P-2 security to the standard SS4. 1/8 inch strip cut, rated P-2 O-2 T-2 E-2 under ISO/IEC 21964 (DIN 66399). Choosing the Turbo does not change the security level in either direction.
  • Mixed media rating. Paper, credit cards, chip cards, CDs/DVDs and floppy disks, with KOBRA's separator mechanism keeping plastic fragments out of the paper stream in the bin.
  • Continuous duty motor. 3/4 HP with thermal protection, rated for 24 hour operation without duty cycles, driven through a heavy duty chain drive with metal gears.
  • No bags, no oil. The bin pulls out without lifting the cutting head and is tipped directly; KOBRA states the 240 series does not require plastic bags, and a strip-cut head does not need lubrication.
  • Energy Smart standby and electronic-eye start. Automatic start and stop, illuminated status indicators, power-saving standby, and a safety stop that kills the cutting head when the bin is removed.

What's in the Box

One assembled unit: cutting head, cabinet and removable 9.5 gallon waste bin, with power cord and manual. No bags and no oil are supplied, and neither is required. KOBRA's datasheet lists no other packed accessories.

Who Should Buy This — and Who Should Not

Buy the SS4 Turbo for a shared machine in a busy area where nobody counts sheets before feeding. The extra stack tolerance means fewer jams, fewer reverse cycles and fewer service calls, which in a shared office is worth more than raw speed.

Do not buy it expecting a faster machine. At 8 ft/min the paper travels through the throat noticeably more slowly than on the standard KOBRA 240 SS4 at 22 ft/min; over a large, tidily fed job the standard SS4 will finish first. If your workload is archive clearance by one careful operator, buy the standard SS4.

And do not buy either one if you need real security. P-2 strips are the lowest useful level and are not appropriate for personal data under most internal policies. For a wider strip with more capacity stay in the family with the KOBRA 240 SS5 Turbo at 52 sheets; for particle-based destruction move to the KOBRA 240.1 C4 at P-4 or the 240.1 C2 at P-5.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Turbo faster than the standard SS4?

No, and the name is misleading. KOBRA rates the Turbo at 8 ft/min feed speed against 22 ft/min for the standard 240 SS4. What the Turbo gains is stack capacity: up to 30 sheets per pass instead of 26. It is geared for torque, not travel. Choose it if your users feed generous handfuls and you want fewer jams; choose the standard SS4 if a single operator feeds steadily and you want the job finished sooner.

Does the Turbo shred to a different security level?

No. Both the SS4 and the SS4 Turbo cut a 1/8 inch strip and both are rated P-2 O-2 T-2 E-2 under ISO/IEC 21964 (DIN 66399). If you need a higher level, changing model within the strip-cut range will not get you there: the KOBRA 240 SS2 reaches P-3 with a 1.9 mm strip, and anything above that requires a cross-cut or micro-cut head such as the KOBRA 240.1 C4 or 240.1 C2.

Can I really put 30 sheets in at once?

Thirty is KOBRA's maximum with good paper in good conditions, and KOBRA notes on the datasheet that capacity varies with paper weight, quality, grain, supply voltage and temperature. Treat the low twenties as your everyday comfortable load on US 20 lb bond and keep 30 for light paper. Overfeeding on any shredder is the usual cause of jams; the point of the Turbo is that the margin for error is wider, not that the limit is soft.

Can it shred staples, clips and CDs?

Staples and standard paper clips yes — KOBRA specifies carbon hardened knives unaffected by them. Binder clips, bulldog clips and binder mechanisms no. CDs, DVDs, floppy disks and chip cards yes; feed discs individually rather than buried in a stack of paper. A separator inside the bin keeps the plastic fragments apart from the shredded paper.

What is the duty cycle before it needs to cool down?

There is no cool-down period. KOBRA specifies a 24 hour continuous duty motor with thermal protection, so the machine is rated to run all day. In real use the constraint is the 9.5 gallon bin rather than the motor.

Does it need bags?

No. KOBRA states the 240 series does not require plastic bags; the waste bin slides out of the cabinet without lifting the cutting head and is tipped directly into recycling. None is supplied. A standard 35 litre liner will fit if your building insists on bagged waste.
