Kobra 240 SS2

The KOBRA 240 SS2 is the security-focused member of the 240 strip-cut family. Its 1.9 mm strip is narrow enough to qualify as P-3 under ISO/IEC 21964 (DIN 66399), where the wider SS4 and SS5 strips sit at P-2. That single difference is the whole reason to choose it. Everything else — the 9.5 inch throat, the 9.5 gallon removable bin, the 24 hour duty motor, the 55 dB(A) noise figure — is common to the 240 chassis. It shreds up to 15 sheets per pass, which is fewer than its P-2 siblings because narrower strips mean more cutting work per sheet.

Key Features

• P-3 from a strip cut. A 1.9 mm strip clears the 2 mm width limit that DIN 66399 sets for P-3 elongated particles. Most strip-cut shredders in this class only reach P-2, so the SS2 is a useful option where a policy names P-3 but a cross-cut machine is not wanted.
• Strip cutting is easier on the machine. Strips take less energy to produce than cross-cut particles, so the SS2 runs cooler and quieter than the cross-cut models on the same chassis, at 55 dB(A) against 58–61 dB(A).
• No oil, no bags. KOBRA's 240-series strip-cut models are designed to run without lubrication and without plastic liners. The bin pulls out and tips. Over a few years that removes two recurring consumables from the budget.
• Energy Smart System. Optical illuminated indicators show status, and the machine drops into a power-saving standby when the throat has been clear for a few seconds.
• Automatic start and stop, safety stop on bin removal. Electronic eyes handle start-up; removing the waste bin cuts power to the cutting head.
• Carbon hardened knives. KOBRA states the 240-series cutting knives are unaffected by staples and clips, so documents do not have to be de-stapled before shredding.

What's in the Box

The 240 SS2 arrives as a single assembled unit: cutting head, cabinet and removable waste bin, plus power cord and manual. Bags are not included and KOBRA's 240-series design does not call for them — the bin is emptied directly. Oil is not supplied because the strip-cut head does not require it.

Who Should Buy This — and Who Should Not

Choose the SS2 when a retention or privacy policy specifies P-3 and you would rather have the simplicity and sheet speed of a strip cut than a cross-cut head. It suits a shared office area, a small HR or finance team, or a clinic front desk handling patient paperwork.

It is the wrong machine if throughput is the priority. Fifteen sheets per pass is the lowest of the strip-cut 240 models; the KOBRA 240 SS4 takes up to 26 and the SS5 up to 29, both at P-2. It is also wrong if your risk assessment expects particles rather than strips: a strip cut of any width leaves reconstructable lines of text, which is why P-4 and above are cross-cut or micro-cut. For that, look at the KOBRA 240.1 C4 at P-4 or the 240.1 C2 at P-5. Finally, unlike its SS4 and SS5 siblings, the SS2 is not rated for CDs, DVDs or floppy disks — it is a paper and card machine.
