Description

Thirty-one sheets a pass at 22 ft/min, with no oil to buy and no maintenance schedule to keep: the KOBRA 240.1 S5 is the highest-throughput model on the 240.1 chassis and the one to choose when the task is getting rid of paper rather than protecting it. Its 1/4 inch strip is the widest cut in the family, which is exactly why the same 4/5 HP motor can push five more sheets per pass than the finer-cutting 240.1 S4. It is rated P-2, and that rating should decide whether it belongs in your office.

Key Features

  • Highest sheet capacity on the 240.1 chassis. Up to 31 sheets per pass at 22 ft/min, against 26 on the KOBRA 240.1 S4 and 17 on the cross-cut C4.
  • Oil-free system. No lubrication, no reservoir, no oil sheets. KOBRA's strip-cut heads are specified as maintenance free, which removes the one consumable that departmental shredders usually run out of.
  • Automatic reverse system. Jams are detected and cleared by reversing the cutting head automatically.
  • 10.5 gallon cabinet on casters. Bigger bin than the KOBRA 240 chassis, mounted on wheels, with a safety stop for an open door or a full bin.
  • Rated for optical media. Paper, credit cards, chip cards, CDs, DVDs and floppy disks all fall within the machine's rating.
  • 24 hour continuous duty. A 4/5 HP motor with no duty cycle, driven through a heavy duty chain drive with metal gears and carbon hardened knives that tolerate staples and clips.
  • Energy Smart System. Eight-second standby, LED indicators, and electronic-eye automatic start and stop.

What's in the Box

One assembled unit: cutting head, caster-mounted cabinet and the 10.5 gallon waste bin, with power cord and manual. No oil is included and none is required. KOBRA does not list shredder bags among the packed contents; buy liners separately if your waste contractor asks for bagged material.

Who Should Buy This — and Who Should Not

Buy the S5 for bulk paper disposal in a busy department: mailroom overflow, print room offcuts, expired routine files, day-to-day office paper. Thirty-one sheets a pass and an oil-free head mean it keeps up without anyone maintaining it, and the caster-mounted bin can be wheeled to wherever the boxes are.

Do not buy it for confidential material. A 1/4 inch strip is the coarsest cut KOBRA offers on this chassis and P-2 is the entry level of the standard. If any of your paper carries names, account numbers or medical detail, buy the KOBRA 240.1 C4 at P-4 instead and accept the drop to 17 sheets a pass, or the KOBRA 240.1 C2 at P-5 if a policy names that level.

If you want a slightly finer strip within the same oil-free, P-2 family, the KOBRA 240.1 S4 cuts 1/8 inch at up to 26 sheets. If the 16 x 14.4 x 25 inch footprint is too large for the space, the KOBRA 240 SS5 gives a comparable 1/4 inch cut in a 33 lb desk-side cabinet with a 9.5 gallon bin.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the S5 shred more sheets than the S4?

Because its strip is wider. The S5 cuts 1/4 inch (about 6 mm) and the S4 cuts 1/8 inch (about 3.2 mm), so the S5's cutting head makes fewer, easier cuts per sheet and the same 4/5 HP motor gets through 31 sheets instead of 26. Both are rated P-2, because DIN 66399 bands strip particles by width and both fall in the same band. The S4's finer strip is harder to reconstruct in practice, if not in classification.

Is P-2 enough for shredding customer records?

Generally no. P-2 leaves 1/4 inch strips with continuous readable text, and most privacy policies and data protection guidance expect at least P-4 for personal data. Use the S5 for general office paper and put anything with names, addresses, account numbers or health information through a cross-cut machine such as the KOBRA 240.1 C4. Saying so plainly is more useful than pretending a strip cut covers you.

Does it need oil or bags?

Neither. KOBRA specifies the strip-cut 240.1 models as oil-free with no lubrication or maintenance required, and the 10.5 gallon bin is designed to be pulled out on its casters and tipped. A liner will fit if your building requires bagged waste, but none is supplied and none is needed for the machine to work.

How often will the bin need emptying?

1/4 inch strip waste is the bulkiest output of any cut type — it springs back rather than settling. KOBRA does not publish a sheets-per-fill figure. On sustained use expect to empty the 10.5 gallon bin at least once a day, and every half hour or so if you are clearing archive boxes. The head stops automatically when the door is opened or the bin reads full.

Can it shred CDs and credit cards?

Yes, CDs, DVDs, floppy disks, credit cards and chip cards are all within rating. Feed discs one at a time. Note that shredding a disc on a P-2 strip-cut head produces relatively large fragments; if optical media destruction is the main requirement rather than an occasional convenience, a dedicated media destroyer is a better answer.

What is the duty cycle before it needs to cool down?

There is none. KOBRA specifies a 24 hour continuous duty motor with no cool-down interval on the 240.1 chassis. You will empty the bin many times before the machine asks for a break.
