Description

The KOBRA 240.1 S4 is a departmental strip-cut shredder built for volume and zero maintenance. It cuts a 1/8 inch strip at P-2, takes up to 26 sheets per pass at 22 ft/min, and empties into a 10.5 gallon cabinet on casters. The detail that separates it from the cross-cut models on the same chassis is KOBRA's oil-free system: the S4 needs no lubrication at all, which means no oil sheets, no reservoir and no consumable to forget. If your shredding is high-volume general office paper, that is worth more than a finer cut.

Key Features

  • Oil-free operation. KOBRA specifies the 240.1 S4 as an oil-free system with no lubrication or maintenance required. The C2 and C4 on the same chassis need an automatic oiler precisely because their cross-cut heads do not have this luxury.
  • 26 sheets a pass at 22 ft/min. Real departmental throughput on the larger 240.1 chassis, backed by a 4/5 HP motor rated for 24 hour continuous duty with no cool-down interval.
  • Automatic reverse system. The machine detects a jam and reverses the cutting head automatically, rather than waiting for someone to work out which switch to press.
  • Optical media and cards. Rated for paper, credit cards, chip cards, CDs/DVDs and floppy disks, so old media does not need a second machine.
  • 10.5 gallon cabinet on casters. A larger bin than the KOBRA 240 chassis, on wheels, with a safety stop that halts the head when the door is open or the bin reads full.
  • Energy Smart System. Standby engages eight seconds after the last sheet, with LED status indicators and electronic-eye start and stop.
  • Carbon hardened knives and metal gear drive. Knives unaffected by staples and clips, driven by a heavy duty chain drive with metal gears.

What's in the Box

Supplied assembled: cutting head, cabinet on casters and the 10.5 gallon waste bin, with power cord and manual. No oil is supplied because none is needed. Shredder bags are not listed among the packed contents; order liners separately if your waste handling requires bagged material.

Who Should Buy This — and Who Should Not

The 240.1 S4 suits a department that shreds a lot of ordinary paper and wants a machine nobody has to look after. Print overruns, superseded drafts, meeting packs, expired routine records. Oil-free plus a 24 hour duty motor plus automatic reverse is close to a zero-attention machine, and the caster-mounted 10.5 gallon bin means it can be wheeled to the paperwork instead of the other way round.

The limitation is security, and it is a real one. P-2 leaves 1/8 inch strips of readable text. That is acceptable for general office paper and not acceptable for personal data under most written policies. If you shred anything covered by a privacy obligation, buy the KOBRA 240.1 C4 at P-4 instead and accept 17 sheets a pass and an oiling reservoir.

Within the strip-cut range, the KOBRA 240.1 S5 uses a wider 1/4 inch cut and takes up to 31 sheets if you want more capacity at the same security level. If you want a smaller and lighter machine and can live with a 9.5 gallon bin, the KOBRA 240 SS4 gives the identical 1/8 inch cut and 26-sheet rating in a 33 lb cabinet for less money.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the 240.1 S4 and the KOBRA 240 SS4?

The cut is identical — 1/8 inch strip, P-2, up to 26 sheets at 22 ft/min. The chassis is not. The 240.1 S4 has a 10.5 gallon bin against 9.5, a 4/5 HP motor against 3/4 HP, an automatic reverse system, a caster mounted cabinet and a bigger footprint at 16 x 14.4 x 25 inch and 53 lb, against 14.5 x 13 x 22 inch and 33 lb. Choose the 240.1 for a shared departmental machine, the 240 for a desk-side one.

Does it really never need oil?

KOBRA describes the 240.1 S4 as an oil-free system requiring no lubrication or maintenance. Strip-cut heads generate far less friction than cross-cut heads, which is why this is possible here and not on the C2 or C4. Adding oil anyway will not damage the machine, but it is not required and there is no reservoir to fill.

Can I leave staples and paper clips in the documents?

Yes. KOBRA specifies carbon hardened cutting knives unaffected by staples and clips. Ordinary staples and paper clips can stay. Binder clips, bulldog clips and ring binder mechanisms must come out — they are hardened steel and will chip the cutting teeth. Laminated sheets should also be kept out.

How many people can share it?

The combination of 26 sheets a pass, a 10.5 gallon bin and a continuous duty motor supports a department of roughly fifteen to thirty people doing normal office shredding. The motor is not the limit — there is no duty cycle — the bin and the queue are. If you need to serve a whole building, look at a larger office-centre machine with a wheelie bin rather than a cabinet.

Does it shred CDs?

Yes. The S4 is rated for CDs, DVDs and floppy disks as well as credit and chip cards. Feed discs individually rather than inside a stack of paper. If your only reason for choosing this model was disc destruction, note the cheaper KOBRA 240 SS4 carries the same rating.

What happens when it jams?

The 240.1 chassis has an automatic reverse system that senses the overload and backs the paper out without operator intervention. If a jam persists, switch to reverse manually, remove the wad, and feed a smaller stack. On a strip-cut machine at 26 sheets, persistent jamming almost always means overfeeding or damp paper rather than a fault.
