Description

Take the strip-cut head from the Kobra +1 SS4, add a dedicated 125 mm media slot and a second bin for plastic waste, and you have the +2 SS4. It is the model to buy when the bulk of your paper is routine - 17-19 sheets a pass at DIN 66399 P-2 - but you also need to destroy access badges, expired cards and archive discs without mixing plastic fragments into the paper recycling.

Key Features

  • 24-hour continuous duty motor. Kobra rates this drive for continuous running with thermal protection rather than a fixed on/off duty cycle, so a long clear-out session does not force a cool-down break.
  • Carbon-hardened steel cutting knives. Kobra states the knives are unaffected by staples and paper clips, so you are not stopping to de-staple every file.
  • Energy Smart standby. The machine drops into a power-saving standby after roughly eight seconds of inactivity, with an illuminated indicator showing which state it is in.
  • Automatic start/stop, auto-reverse and safety stop. Photo-eyes start the rollers when paper enters; the cutters reverse on a jam and stop outright when the bin is removed or full.
  • Separate 125 mm media slot with its own 1.5-litre bin. Discs and cards are destroyed and collected apart from the paper, which keeps a single-stream paper recycling route clean.
  • 17-19 sheets a pass. The strip head asks little of the 250 W motor, so thick stacks go through in one go.
  • Bagless 10.2-gallon paper bin. Slides out without lifting the cutting head; the front window shows the level.

What's in the Box

Supplied assembled: cutting head, 10.2-gallon paper bin, 0.4-gallon plastics bin and power cord. No waste bags are included and none are needed - both bins empty directly. Keep the two bins separate at emptying time if you want the plastic shreds kept out of the paper recycling.

Who Should Buy This - and Who Should Not

The +2 SS4 fits a reception desk, a records office or a stockroom that gets through a lot of low-sensitivity paper and has an ongoing trickle of expired ID cards and CDs. The two-bin design is the reason to pay more than the single-throat +1 SS4.

What it is not is a compliance machine. P-2 permits 6 mm strips and this cuts 3.8 mm - readable fragments survive, and no US privacy framework treats that as adequate destruction of personal data. If your paper includes patient, payroll or customer records, buy the +3 CC4 (P-4, same two-bin layout) or the +2 CC2 (P-5, same cabinet). If you want raw speed above all, the +2 SS7 takes 25-27 sheets at P-1.

Running costs are effectively zero. Neither bin takes a liner, there is no oil cartridge to reorder, and the Energy Smart standby means the machine draws almost nothing between jobs. The only routine task is remembering to check the 1.5-litre plastics bin, which has no window and will not stop the machine when it fills.

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly does the +2 add over the +1 SS4?

A second throat and a second bin. The paper side is identical - same 230 mm opening, same 3.8 mm strip, same 17-19 sheet rating, same 38.5-litre bagless bin. The +2 adds a 125 mm slot for CDs, DVDs, Blu-ray discs and plastic cards, feeding a separate 1.5-litre plastics bin so the fragments never enter your paper waste stream. If you never destroy media, the +1 SS4 does the same job for less money.

Can I put paper into the CD slot to speed things up?

No. The media slot has a different cutting geometry intended for rigid plastic and it feeds the small 1.5-litre bin, which would fill almost immediately with paper. Paper goes in the 230 mm throat. Using the wrong slot will not damage the machine instantly but it will pack the plastics bin and can block the media path.

Is P-2 acceptable for shredding old customer invoices?

It depends what is on them. An invoice showing only a company name and an order number is fine at P-2. An invoice with an individual's home address, a partial card number or a bank detail is not - a 3.8 mm strip keeps those fields legible along the length of the strip. If any of your invoices carry personal or payment data, the +3 CC4 at P-4 is the minimum sensible level.

How many discs can the plastics bin hold?

Roughly 25-40 CDs or DVDs depending on how the fragments settle, since the bin is 1.5 litres. Credit cards and badges take much less space. There is no window on the plastics bin, so make checking it part of the routine - unlike the paper bin, it will not stop the machine when it is full.

Will US Legal paper fit, and how many sheets on US bond?

US Letter, A4 and US Legal all feed through the 9.2 in throat - the opening limits width, not length. Kobra rates the head at 17-19 sheets on 70 g/m2 paper and 15-17 on 80 g/m2. Standard US 20 lb bond is around 75 g/m2, so plan on the middle of that range. Folded sheets, card stock and glossy paper all count for more than their page count.

How loud is it and does it idle?

Kobra rates the +2 SS4 at 55 dB(A) under load, comparable to ordinary conversation and quieter than most office printers mid-job. Between jobs it makes no noise at all: the Energy Smart system drops the machine into a power-saving standby after roughly eight seconds of inactivity, with an illuminated indicator showing the state, and the photo-eyes wake it when paper enters the throat.

Does it stop automatically when the paper bin is full?

Yes. The safety stop system halts the cutting knives when the bin is removed and when the paper bin registers full, and the machine reverses automatically if a stack jams. Combined with the transparent front window that means you can leave it running between passes without watching it. The Energy Smart standby also drops it into low power after about eight seconds idle.
