Description

The HSM V-Press 860 eco is the least expensive way into HSM's largest vertical baler chassis, and the only thing it gives up is the door. It presses with the same 594 kN as the 860 plus, fills through the same 1,195 x 650 mm aperture, and turns out the same 480 kg bale — but its double doors are opened and closed by hand, where the plus pushes its upper door half down and opens it for you at the end of the cycle. If your operators bale two or three times a shift rather than continuously, that is a difference you will barely notice and a saving you will.

This is a mill-size vertical baler for cardboard, mixed paper and plastic film. It is manually loaded and manually tied, and it produces a 1,200 x 1,200 x 780 mm bale that a forklift moves and a recycler will buy at a full-bale rate. It is not a machine for a stockroom corner: it stands 2,985 mm tall and HSM specifies a minimum ceiling height of 3,000 mm, so check the roof before you check the floor.

  • Double doors with a swinging upper half — the simplest and most serviceable door arrangement in the 860 range.
  • 1,110 mm loading height, which is roughly waist height for most operators and low enough to tip a small cart into.
  • Handles mixed paper as well as OCC and film, which the plus B does not.
  • 594 kN of pressing force from a 4.8 kW motor. HSM prints this as "60 t" on its US pages; that is the force divided by gravity, not a weight.
  • HSM TCS (Torsion Control System) monitors the press ram for twist. A ram that starts to skew in the chamber is the usual cause of expensive frame damage on vertical balers.
  • Rapid stroke technology runs the ram fast through free air and slows it only when it meets resistance, which is where the 25 second idle cycle comes from.
  • Automatic start after door close, so the operator loads, shuts the door and walks away. No two-hand start button to hold.
  • Hand wheel door lock with counter-rotating thread — one turn locks or releases both sides.
  • Membrane keypad with text display reporting machine state and faults in words rather than blink codes.
  • Four-fold wire tying as standard. A polyester tape station is available as an option.

What's in the Box

HSM does not publish a scope-of-delivery list for the V-Press range, so we will only state what is structurally certain: the press arrives assembled and skidded, with its operating instructions. Baling wire is not included. The machine takes 2.8 x 3,700 mm pre-looped wire, HSM part number 6135 993 002. Polyester tape (WG 55, part 6514 993 000) can be used only if the optional tape station is fitted at the factory — it is not a field retrofit you can order with the first roll of tape.

The machine needs a three-phase 480 V / 60 Hz connection made by an electrician, and it needs to be rigged into place: at 4,189 lb it is not going to be walked across a warehouse on a pallet jack.

Who Should Buy This — and Who Should Not

Buy the 860 eco if your site generates enough cardboard or film to justify a 480 kg bale but bales in batches — a distribution centre that flattens boxes into a cage all day and bales at the end of a shift, a printer clearing trim waste, a supermarket back room. The manual door costs an operator a few seconds per cycle and nothing else.

Buy the 860 plus instead if the machine will be cycled more or less continuously by staff who also have other jobs. Its power-assisted upper door opens itself when the cycle ends, which removes the one moment in the cycle where an operator has to stand and wait. It is 2,030 lb heavier in the chassis and 1,579 mm deep rather than 1,363 mm, so it needs more floor.

Buy the 860 plus B instead if you are baling bulky film, big bags or awkward oversized cartons. Its aperture is 1,500 mm wide against this machine's 1,195 mm, and its bales run to 550 kg. Note that HSM lists the plus B for cardboard and film only, not mixed paper.

Do not buy any 860 if your throughput justifies continuous automatic baling. Once you are feeding from a conveyor rather than by hand, a channel baler such as the VK 2306 does the job without an operator standing at the door, and the 860's 25 second manual cycle becomes the bottleneck.

How big is the finished bale, and how do I move it?

The V-Press 860 eco makes a bale measuring 1,200 x 1,200 x 780 mm (47.24 x 47.24 x 30.71 in) weighing up to 480 kg / 1,058 lb, depending on what you put in it. That is a forklift job, not a pallet-truck job, and it is the standard mill-size bale that paper mills and film reprocessors buy at the best rate. Make sure you have a forklift rated for the weight and somewhere flat to stack bales before the truck comes.

Is baling wire included?

No. The machine ties four wires per bale and you buy the wire separately. HSM specifies pre-looped wire of 2.8 x 3,700 mm, part number 6135 993 002. If you would rather use polyester tape (WG 55 tape, part 6514 993 000), that requires the optional tape station to be fitted to the machine — it is a factory option, not something you can add by simply buying tape. Budget for wire as a running cost from day one.

What electrical supply does it need?

A three-phase 480 V / 60 Hz supply. The drive is rated 6.44 HP, which is 4.8 kW. HSM's European datasheet for the same machine lists 4 kW at 400 V / 50 Hz; that is the identical motor at a different line frequency, not a different specification. The connection has to be made by a qualified electrician, and it is worth confirming the exact breaker size with HSM or with us before the electrician quotes.

Will it fit in my building?

The press is 1,797 mm wide and 2,985 mm tall, and HSM asks for a minimum ceiling height of 3,000 mm — the ram needs headroom above the chamber. Depth is the one figure worth confirming on your order acknowledgement: HSM's US article sheet for 6148113 gives 1,363 mm (53.66 in), while HSM's European catalogue lists a V-Press 860 eco at 1,070 mm. The difference is almost certainly a door configuration, but check it if your aisle is tight.

Can it bale plastic film as well as cardboard?

Yes. HSM lists cardboard, mixed paper and plastic film for this model. Film is harder work than OCC because it springs back hard against the wires as the door opens, so expect lighter bales from film than from cardboard even though the press force is the same. If film is your main material rather than an occasional one, look at the 860 plus B, which HSM builds specifically for film and cardboard and which produces heavier bales through a wider aperture.

How many bales an hour can I expect?

HSM publishes a 25 second idle cycle time and a theoretical idle throughput of 12 m³/h (424 cft/h). In real use the limiting factor is how fast a person can feed the chamber, and HSM's own technical sheet for the 860 quotes an hourly output of one to two bales. Treat 25 seconds as the ram speed, not the production rate — loading, tying and ejecting take far longer than pressing does.

How loud is it?

HSM publishes an acoustic level of approximately 62.9 dB(A) for the V-Press 860. HSM does not state the measurement distance or whether that figure is taken under load, so treat it as an indication rather than a number to design a hearing-protection policy around. In practical terms it is a quiet machine for its size; the loudest event in the cycle is usually the door, not the pump.

What is the warranty?

HSM does not publish a standard warranty period for the V-Press range in the way it does for its document shredders, and we will not quote one we cannot verify. Warranty and any service agreement are confirmed on the order documents. If warranty length is a deciding factor between models, ask us to get it in writing from HSM before you place the order.
