Description

The V-Press 1160 eco is HSM's mill-size vertical baler: 594 kN of pressing force producing a bale 1200 mm square and 1100 mm high, weighing up to 550 kg. That bale is the point of the machine. At 550 kg you are producing a unit that paper mills and recyclers buy at a mill-grade price and collect on a standard trailer, rather than a small bale that gets handled as mixed waste.

It is also the reason this is a serious installation rather than a corner machine. The 1160 stands 2985 mm high, weighs 2300 kg empty, ties with four-fold wire, and needs a forklift to handle finished bales. Check your ceiling before anything else.

What's in the Box

The press itself, delivered on a truck and set in place by the installer. Baling wire is a consumable and is not supplied. Neither is the optional tape station, the three-phase electrical connection, or the forklift you will need to move 550 kg bales. HSM publishes no packing list for this machine.

Who Should Buy This — and Who Should Not

This is a machine for sites that generate cardboard by the tonne: distribution centres, large retail, manufacturers receiving components in bulk packaging, and waste-management operations consolidating dry recyclables. The economic case rests on the 550 kg bale — at that weight you are selling a mill-grade commodity and paying for far fewer collections, and both sides of that add up quickly at volume.

It is the wrong machine for a site with a low roof or a modest volume. At 2985 mm high it will not go into a standard commercial unit with a 3 m ceiling once you allow clearance, and it weighs 2300 kg before a bale is in it. If your ceiling is the constraint, the V-Press 825 plus stands 2370 mm — 615 mm lower — and still makes a 280 kg bale. If volume is the constraint, the V-Press 820 plus at 178 kN is a more proportionate spend.

Against its closest sibling, the V-Press 1160 plus, the eco presses identically: same 594 kN, same 550 kg bale, same 1195 × 650 mm aperture. On HSM's published data the plus is a deeper and heavier machine (2427 kg against 2300 kg). HSM does not publish a feature-by-feature breakdown of what the extra depth and mass provide, so if the difference matters to your decision, ask us to get it confirmed rather than assuming it is only badge engineering.

How much cardboard does a 550 kg bale represent?

Roughly the contents of two to three standard 1100 litre waste containers of flattened cardboard, depending on how well it is loaded and how much air is in it. The practical effect is on collections: sites that were paying for several container lifts a week typically drop to a periodic bale collection, and the bales are sold rather than disposed of. That change in the waste contract is usually the largest part of the payback.

What ceiling height do I need?

The machine is 2985 mm tall, so a nominal 3 m ceiling is not enough once you allow working clearance above it and access to load the aperture. Plan on 3.3 m or more. If your building will not take that, the V-Press 825 plus at 2370 mm is 615 mm lower and still presses at 250 kN, and the 820 plus at 2499 mm is another option. Height is the single most common reason this machine gets rejected on site survey.

Does it use wire or tape?

Wire as standard, tied four-fold. At 550 kg a cardboard bale exerts considerable spring-back and wire is what reliably holds it. HSM offers a tape station as an option if you would rather run polyester strapping, which is what the smaller 820 and 825 models use as standard. Wire is a consumable and is not supplied with the machine.

Can it bale plastic film as well as cardboard?

Yes. HSM rates the 1160 for cardboard, plastic film and mixed paper. Film bales at a lower weight per bale than cardboard because it compresses differently, and mixing materials in one bale reduces what a recycler will pay, so most sites run separate campaigns rather than a mixed stream. The machine itself does not need reconfiguring between materials.

What power supply does it need?

480 V three-phase at 60 Hz, driving a 4.8 kW motor. That is a hard-wired connection made by an electrician before delivery. HSM's equivalent European article is a 4 kW machine at 400 V / 50 Hz; the higher figure here is the same motor running at 60 Hz rather than a different specification. Confirm your supply during the site survey, not on the delivery day.

How do I get a finished bale out of it?

With a forklift or a heavy pallet truck. A 550 kg bale is not a manual handling job under any circumstances, and the bay needs enough clear floor in front of the machine for a truck to approach, lift and turn. If the only handling equipment on site is a hand pallet truck on a sloped yard, that is a genuine reason to look at a smaller press instead.
