Can the OMDD 130 shred paper?
No. HSM lists its shreddable materials as credit cards and CDs/DVDs, and the machine carries no P classification under DIN 66399 at all. The intake is 5.12 inches wide, narrower than a sheet of letter paper, and the cutting head is built for rigid media. Use a document shredder for paper and keep this machine for media.
What do O-5, T-6 and E-5 actually mean?
They are DIN 66399 classes for different media types. O covers optical media: O-5 requires particles of 10 square millimetres or less. T covers magnetic media: T-6 requires 10 square millimetres or less. E covers electronic data carriers such as chip cards and memory devices: E-5 requires 30 square millimetres or less. Higher numbers mean smaller particles and higher security within each class.
Will it destroy hard drives?
No, and it should not be attempted. HSM specifies credit cards and CDs/DVDs for this model. A hard drive contains hardened platters, a metal casing and magnets that will damage a cutting head designed for polycarbonate and PVC. HSM builds separate hard drive shredders for that job; ask us and we will point you at the right model rather than sell you this one.
Is it NSA approved?
We cannot confirm that it is, so we will not say that it is. NSA/CSS listings are model-specific and are published on the NSA Evaluated Products List for optical destruction devices. A DIN 66399 O-5 rating is a European classification and does not by itself confer NSA approval. If your requirement is specifically NSA compliance, ask us to check the current EPL entry before you order.
What power supply does it need?
110-120 V at 60 Hz, drawing 1,920 W. That is approximately 16 amps, which exceeds the continuous load a standard 15 amp office circuit should carry. Plan on a dedicated 20 amp circuit and a wall outlet. Do not run it through an extension lead or a shared power strip.
How often will the container need emptying?
HSM publishes the container volume as 13.5 gallons (51 litres) but does not publish a disc count for it. We will not guess at one. In practice, shredded polycarbonate is light and bulky, so on a sustained run at anywhere near the 2,000 discs per hour throughput you should expect to be emptying frequently and to build that into the workflow.
Can it run continuously at 2,000 discs per hour?
That figure is HSM's stated cutting capacity for CDs and DVDs at one item per pass. HSM does not publish a duty cycle or a permitted continuous run time for the OMDD 130, so we will not present 2,000 per hour as a guaranteed sustained rate over a full shift. It is a rate specification; treat container emptying and operator feeding as the practical limits.
