What does the second cutting stage actually achieve?
It reduces the particle from 20 x 40-50 mm to 0.39 x 1-1.18 in and raises the DIN 66399 rating from H-4 to H-5. In practical terms the fragments become small enough that intact NAND packages from a solid state drive are far less likely to survive, and platter fragments are correspondingly smaller. It costs you throughput - 280 drives per hour rather than 360 - and roughly 800 lb of machine weight.
Is this good enough for SSD destruction?
It is the better of the two HDS 230 options for SSDs, but be careful about absolute claims. H-5 does not guarantee that every NAND package is breached. Many organisations pair H-5 shredding with verified cryptographic erasure or degaussing where applicable, and document both. If a specific particle size is mandated by your regulator or customer, check it against the 0.39 x 1-1.18 in figure before you commit.
Why do HSM's US and European figures for the cut size differ?
HSM's US article data for 1777127 states 0.39 x 1-1.18 in, while the European data sheet for the equivalent 400 V machine (article 1777124) states 11.5 x 26 mm, which converts to about 0.45 x 1.02 in. Both fall within DIN 66399 H-5, so the security rating is unaffected either way. We quote the US figure because that is the article being sold here.
Does it need more space than the single-stage machine?
No. Both tray configurations measure 62.2 x 35.63 x 55.91 in (1580 x 905 x 1420 mm). What changes is weight: 2,420.67 lb against 1,615.99 lb. That is a floor-loading question rather than a floor-space question, and it is worth checking with your facilities team if the machine is going anywhere other than a ground-floor slab.
How often will the tray need emptying at 280 drives an hour?
Frequently. The pull-out container is 11.9 gallons (45 L), and twice-cut drive material is dense. Sustained shredding will fill it well inside an hour. If that stop-start rhythm does not suit your operation, the discharge conveyor version of this same machine feeds a container of your own choosing and removes the interruption entirely.
Is it NSA approved for classified hard drives?
No. HSM does not appear on the current NSA/CSS Evaluated Products List for Hard Disk Drive Sanitization Devices and Deformers, nor on the earlier destruction devices list. Some HSM listings have claimed blanket EPL coverage; the published lists do not support it. DIN H-5 is a strong commercial rating, but classified US government media must be destroyed on EPL-listed equipment under NSA/CSS Policy Manual 9-12.
