Description

This is the single-stage HSM StoreEx HDS 230 with the standard pull-out tray - the fastest and least expensive way into the HDS 230 chassis. One cutting pass at 0.78 x 1.5-2 in (20 x 40-50 mm) gives DIN 66399 H-4 and a rated 360 hard drives per hour, which is nearly double what the smaller HDS 150 manages. Choose this configuration when throughput and price matter more than particle size, and when the shredded material can go straight into a bin rather than onto a belt.

All four HDS 230 configurations share one chassis. The loading aperture measures 11.81 x 6.5 x 2.36 in (300 x 165 x 60 mm), which accepts hard drives and magnetic tape cartridges up to 3.5 in. Cutting rollers are solid hardened steel with an automatic reverse that clears jams without operator intervention, the collection container is a 11.9-gallon (45 L) pull-out bin, and supply is 208 V / 60 Hz. An emergency stop is fitted, and a storage table for staged data carriers sits on the infeed side. What varies is the number of cutting stages - one or two - and whether the machine discharges into the pull-out bin or onto a conveyor belt.

HSM does not publish a drive power rating for the US 208 V article, so no motor figure is shown. Third-party listings quote figures between 3 kW and 9.5 kW for this machine; we are not going to repeat any of them as fact. Ask HSM or your dealer for the nameplate rating before the electrical work is specified.

A note on NSA claims. Listings for HSM media shredders - including, until now, this one - have stated that HSM hard drive shredders are covered by the NSA/CSS Evaluated Products List. We checked the current NSA/CSS EPL for Hard Disk Drive Sanitization Devices and Deformers and the earlier EPL for Hard Disk Drive Destruction Devices. HSM does not appear on either. If you are destroying classified US government media you must select a device from the applicable NSA EPL and follow NSA/CSS Policy Manual 9-12. DIN 66399 H-ratings are a European commercial standard and are not an NSA authorisation.

What's in the Box

The machine arrives assembled with its cutting unit, filtration and collection container fitted. Because of the size, weight and special handling requirements, HSM ships the HDS 230 FOB origin regardless of standard vendor shipping policy - freight is quoted separately and requires a forklift or dock at delivery. Confirm floor loading, door and corridor clearances and the 208 V / 60 Hz supply before ordering. HSM does not publish a machine warranty term in the article data we can verify; get it in writing on the quotation.

Who Should Buy This - and Who Should Not

Buy it if you are an ITAD operation, data centre or large IT department retiring drives in the hundreds, you have 208 V available, and H-4 satisfies your destruction policy. The single-stage tray version gives the best drives-per-dollar and the smallest footprint in the range.

Do not buy it if your policy calls for H-5, or if solid state drives dominate your volume - a 20 x 40-50 mm particle can leave NAND packages intact. The dual-stage HDS 230 with tray, H-5 takes a second pass down to 0.39 x 1-1.18 in at the cost of throughput (280 drives per hour) and about 800 lb of extra machine. If you are feeding continuously and want the output to land in a gaylord or roll-off rather than a 45 L bin, the HDS 230 H-4 with discharge conveyor belt is the same cutting unit with a belt. And if you do not have 208 V service, the StoreEx HDS 150 runs on 120 V.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the tray version give up compared with the conveyor version?

Continuous running. The tray is an 11.9-gallon (45 L) pull-out bin, so on sustained work you stop to empty it. The conveyor version carries shredded material out to a container of your choosing and lets the machine run until that container is full. The cutting unit, security level, throughput and aperture are identical. The tray version is also 51 inches shorter and about 280 lb lighter, which matters in a tight room.

Is H-4 enough for SSDs?

For spinning hard drives yes; for SSDs it is a weak result. H-4 here means 20 x 40-50 mm particles, and modern NAND packages are considerably smaller than that, so an individual chip can come through undamaged. If SSDs are a routine part of your stream, either step up to the dual-stage H-5 machine or combine shredding with verified cryptographic erasure before destruction, and document both steps.

How fast is it really, drive for drive?

HSM rates it at 360 3.5-inch drives per hour and 1,500 2.5-inch drives per hour, with 7,500 CDs or DVDs and 500 magnetic tapes. Those are machine rates with an operator feeding continuously. In a real ITAD workflow with serial capture, weighing and certificate generation, expect the paperwork to set the pace rather than the shredder.

What power supply does it need?

It is a 208 V / 60 Hz machine. That is a dedicated circuit installed by an electrician, not a wall outlet. HSM does not publish a drive power or amperage figure for this article, so specify the electrical work only after your dealer confirms the nameplate rating in writing - guessing at this stage is how installations get delayed.

Is this shredder on the NSA Evaluated Products List?

No. We checked both the current NSA/CSS EPL for Hard Disk Drive Sanitization Devices and Deformers and the previous destruction devices list, and HSM appears on neither. Marketing copy that claims blanket EPL coverage for HSM hard drive shredders is not supported. DIN 66399 H-4 is a European commercial rating; it says nothing about NSA acceptance.

How loud is it in a shared room?

HSM quotes approximately 49 dB(A) at idle, which is the lowest figure of the four HDS 230 configurations - about the level of a quiet office. Under load, cutting a steel drive housing is noticeably louder than idle, and HSM does not publish a working figure. Treat 49 dB(A) as a background number, not as what you will hear while shredding.
