Does it really run on a normal 120 V outlet?
It runs on 120 V single phase at 50-60 Hz, which is what makes it unusual in this class. That does not mean any outlet will do - a machine of this size needs its own dedicated circuit sized by an electrician, and it is commonly installed on a 20 A line. What you avoid is the 208 V or three-phase service the larger HDS 230 requires, which is often the deciding factor for a leased office suite.
How many hard drives can it actually destroy in an hour?
HSM publishes 210 for 3.5-inch drives and 1,200 for 2.5-inch drives. The gap is real: laptop drives are smaller and lighter and pass through much faster. Those figures assume continuous manual feeding by an operator who is not also logging serial numbers. If you are recording asset tags as you go, plan on well under half the rated rate.
Is a 40 mm strip cut enough for solid state drives?
Not really, and we would rather say so. H-3 with a 40 mm strip is designed around the platters in spinning hard drives, which are destroyed by deformation and cutting at that scale. SSDs store data in small NAND packages that can survive a 40 mm fragment intact. If SSDs are a significant part of your volume, use a finer machine or combine shredding with cryptographic erasure before destruction.
Is the HDS 150 NSA approved?
No. We checked the current NSA/CSS Evaluated Products List for Hard Disk Drive Sanitization Devices and Deformers and the earlier destruction devices list; HSM does not appear on either. Some HSM listings have long claimed EPL coverage - that claim is not supported by the published lists. For classified US government media, buy from the applicable NSA EPL and follow NSA/CSS Policy Manual 9-12.
How often does the waste bin need emptying?
The bin holds 10.6 gallons (40 L), which sounds small until you handle it. Shredded drive material is dense metal and it gets heavy long before the bin looks full. At the rated 210 drives per hour you will be emptying more than once an hour in sustained use. Plan bin handling into the workflow, and have a second container ready so the machine is not idle.
Will it take a drive still in its caddy or sled?
The loading aperture is 290 x 165 x 60 mm (11.42 x 6.5 x 2.36 in) and accepts hard drives and tape cartridges up to 3.5 in, so a bare drive or one in a light plastic sled will go in. Heavy steel server caddies and rack ears should come off first - they add nothing to the destruction and they wear the cutters. HSM also lists CDs, DVDs, floppy disks, cards, staples and paper clips as approved.
