HSM shredstar X6pro 1/16 x 5/8 + sep. CD cutting unit - HSM1046

The HSM shredstar X6pro is a compact P-5 micro-cut shredder that reduces paper to 1/16 x 5/8 in (2 x 15 mm) particles, 6 sheets at a time. It is the highest security level in the shredstar line, packed into a desk-side body with a 5.3-gallon bin and a separate cutter for CDs, DVDs and cards. It is aimed at a single user whose policy calls for P-5, such as someone handling HR, payroll, legal or medical paperwork at home or at one desk.

Finer particles in the X10's body

The X6pro shares its 13.58 x 9.65 x 17.52 in housing, 160 W motor and 5.3-gallon bin with the P-4 shredstar X10. The difference is the head. The X10 cuts 135 mm² particles at 10 sheets; the X6pro cuts 30 mm² particles, which means many more cuts across every page, and so it takes 6. The reward for that slower pace is a fragment that rarely holds more than a character or two. Tiny particles also pack densely, so the bin is rated at about 255 sheets.

What P-5 does, and does not, cover

DIN 66399 allows a maximum of 30 mm² per particle at P-5, and the X6pro's 2 x 15 mm cut sits exactly at that mark. P-5 is commonly specified where a name sits next to account, salary or health details. It is still a commercial level rather than a government one: NSA/CSS 02-01 calls for 1 x 5 mm particles and a listed model, which no shredstar is. HSM sells the cut as particle cut; US retailers usually call it micro-cut.

Day-to-day use

The light barrier starts the cutters automatically, and automatic reverse ejects a stack that is too thick, which is easy to do with a 6-sheet limit. LEDs report power, overload, overheating and a full bin, and an inspection window shows the waste level. Staples and paper clips are approved. Discs and cards pass through the separate cutter into their own container, which is rated O-1 and T-2, well below the paper's P-5. HSM gives no continuous-duty rating, so treat it as a desk machine, not one for emptying archive boxes.

Choosing between the X6pro and its siblings

• shredstar X10: same body and bin, P-4 at 3/16 x 1 1/8 in, 10 sheets. Faster if P-4 is acceptable.
• shredstar X12pro: the same P-5 cut in a rolling office cabinet with a 550 W motor, 12 sheets per pass and a 6.9-gallon bin.
• shredstar X8: P-4 at 8 sheets in the shorter body, for lighter needs.

Who should buy the X6pro

It is the sensible choice for one person who must meet P-5 and shreds modest amounts each day. If several people share the requirement, the X12pro is the better tool; if P-4 is enough, the X10 gives you more sheets per pass in the same footprint.
