HSM shredstar X20 5/32 x 1 7/16 inch with separate CD cutting unit - HSM1051w

The HSM shredstar X20 is the fastest P-4 model in the shredstar family, cutting 18 sheets of 80 g/m² paper per pass into 5/32 x 1 7/16 in (4 x 37 mm) particles. A 395 W motor drives it, and the waste collects in a 6.9-gallon bin rated at about 325 sheets inside a cabinet on castors, with a separate cutter for CDs, DVDs and cards. It is built for a busy small office that needs P-4 security and does not want people queuing at the shredder.

Where the X20's extra speed comes from

The X20 uses the same rolling cabinet, 9.06 in throat and 6.9-gallon container as the X17, but fits the 395 W motor HSM also uses in the strip-cut S25. That extra power lifts the pass from 15 sheets to 18 without changing the particle. In practice most letters, short reports and stapled forms go through in one feed, so a shared machine clears its queue faster. Note that HSM rates it at 18 sheets, not 20, at 80 g/m²; plan around that figure.

P-4 protection and what you can feed it

Each 148 mm² particle falls under DIN 66399's 160 mm² limit for P-4, the usual requirement for client files, HR paperwork and financial records. The full rating is P-4, O-1, T-2, E-2 and F-1. Staples and paper clips may stay attached. Credit cards and discs go through the dedicated slot and cutter into their own container. The X20 is a commercial office shredder: it is not on the NSA list and is not suitable for classified material.

Running the X20 day to day

A light barrier starts the cutters, automatic reverse ejects an overfeed, and LEDs flag power, overload, overheating, a full bin and an open door. The bin stops the machine when it is full and has an inspection window. HSM publishes no continuous-duty rating for the shredstar line, so long clear-outs call for pauses whenever the overheat light appears. At 29.76 lb it is the heaviest of the P-4 office shredstars, but the castors make moving it easy.

• shredstar X17: same bin and cabinet, 15 sheets on 320 W. Save money if 15 sheets is enough.
• shredstar X12pro: P-5 particles of 2 x 15 mm on 550 W, 12 sheets per pass, same bin.
• shredstar S25: 1/4 in P-2 strips at 25 sheets with the same motor, only for non-sensitive paper.

Who the X20 is for

Pick the X20 when several people share a shredder for P-4 paperwork and the current one keeps them waiting. Choose the X12pro if your policy requires P-5. If the shredder would run most of the working day, HSM's SECURIO line is designed for that heavier duty.
