The HSM shredstar X20 is the highest-throughput P-4 machine in the shredstar range: 18 sheets of 80 g/m2 paper in a pass, driven by a 395 W motor — the same motor HSM fits to the strip-cut S25 — into a 6.9 gallon bin rated at roughly 325 sheets. Everything else about it, from the 9.06 inch throat to the 15.35 x 11.81 x 23.43 inch rolling cabinet, is shared with the rest of the office chassis. If you are equipping a busy small office and P-4 is your requirement, this is where the shredstar line tops out.

Who Should Buy This — and Who Should Not

Buy the X20 if four or five people share a shredder and the current one is holding them up. Eighteen sheets means most documents go through in a single pass without splitting, and the 325-sheet bin on castors keeps the emptying interval reasonable.

Do not buy it if you actually need P-5. The X20 is P-4; the shredstar X12pro in the same cabinet cuts 2 x 15 mm at P-5, with the same 6.9 gallon bin, at 12 sheets a pass and 550 W. That is the trade: a third less paper per pass in exchange for particles a quarter the size.

Do not buy it as a departmental workhorse for continuous shredding. shredstar is HSM's entry-level line and the company publishes no continuous-duty rating for it. If a shredder is running most of the day, or if several people queue at it, HSM's SECURIO range is built for that duty and is where you should be looking. Conversely, if 18 sheets is more than you need and P-2 is acceptable, the strip-cut S25 takes 25 sheets in the same cabinet for less money.
