The HSM shredstar X12 is the smallest machine in HSM's office shredstar chassis — a 15.35 x 11.81 x 23.43 inch floor-standing cabinet on castors with a 9.06 inch throat. It cuts P-4 particles at 5/32 x 1 7/16 inch, takes 12 sheets a pass on a 300 W motor, and empties into a 6.1 gallon bin rated at roughly 290 sheets. Who Should Buy This — and Who Should Not

Buy the X12 if you want a rolling, floor-standing P-4 shredder for a small team and you are working to a budget. Twelve sheets a pass and a 290-sheet bin suits two to four people who shred a few pages each per day.

Look carefully at the X14 before you commit. The shredstar X14 has the same 300 W motor, the same 4 x 37 mm P-4 cut, the same 6.1 gallon bin, the same 290-sheet rating, the same 27.56 lb weight and the same dimensions. The only published difference is the sheet rating: 13 against 12. If the price gap is meaningful, take the X12 and spend the difference elsewhere; if the two are close, the X14 is the better buy for the same footprint.

Do not buy it if you need P-5, or if the shredder will be shared by more than about four people. For P-5 in this chassis, the shredstar X12pro cuts 2 x 15 mm at 12 sheets. For higher throughput at P-4, the X17 takes 15 sheets into a 6.9 gallon bin and the X20 takes 18. Above that, the office chassis runs out of headroom and you should be looking at HSM's SECURIO range instead.
