How often should I oil the shredder?
Follow your machine's manual, because the interval varies by model and duty. HSM dealer documentation for cross-cut machines cites lubrication every fifteen to thirty minutes of operation, and many sites simply oil at every bin emptying, which achieves much the same thing. Under-oiling a cross-cut head is a warranty issue on most machines, so it is worth putting on a checklist rather than leaving to memory.
Is this the same oil as the single 12 oz bottle?
Yes. Part 3200000007 is six bottles of the same 12 fl oz HSM lubricant sold singly as 3200000006. Distributors also list this oil under HSM's own part numbers, with the 12 oz six-pack appearing as 316P. If you are cross-checking a quote, the volume and pack count are the fields to compare.
Can I use a generic shredder oil instead?
Technically most ISO VG 32 mineral shredder oils will lubricate the head. The reason to use HSM's is warranty: HSM's guidance is to use HSM-branded oil, and using something else gives a service engineer an easy answer if a cutting head is examined. What you must not do is substitute an aerosol lubricant or a household oil, which can degrade the head and the drive.
Is it safe to use around staff, and is there an SDS?
There is a safety data sheet. The product is classified as harmful if inhaled (acute inhalation category 4) with the signal word Warning, and it carries a California Proposition 65 notice. In normal use — a squeeze along the cutting head with the machine off — that is a low-exposure task, but keep the container closed, avoid misting the oil, and make the SDS available where the shredder is sited.
Will it work in a shredder with an automatic oiler?
Yes. HSM's oil is what the auto-oiler reservoir is intended to be refilled with; the automatic system simply doses it for you instead of you applying it by hand. Check your manual for the reservoir fill point and level, as the routine differs from manual oiling.
