Description

This is the SECURIO P44i 1873 with a second cutting head bolted in: a dedicated 4 x 7 mm unit for CDs, DVDs and cards that runs entirely separately from the paper cutters. The paper side is unchanged - 3.9 x 40 mm particle cut, DIN 66399 P-4, 43 to 45 sheets of 80 g/m² per pass. What you gain is that discs never touch the paper rollers, and HSM's ratings for optical and data carriers rise to O-4 and T-5 as a result.

Every P44i shares the same cabinet and drivetrain: a 15.75-inch (400 mm) intake that swallows letter, legal and A3 sheets without folding, a 54.2-gallon (205 L) pull-out collection cabinet, a 1,900 W IntelligentDrive motor, and a touch display that reports bin status and jams in plain language. Idle noise is quoted at roughly 55 dB(A). The cabinet measures 27.56 x 23.31 x 43.5 inches (700 x 592 x 1105 mm), so it clears a standard 36-inch doorway on its casters but needs a dedicated footprint rather than a corner of a copy room. What changes from article to article is the cutting head - and that is the only thing you actually need to decide.

Key Features

  • Separate 4 x 7 mm cutting unit for optical media - a second slot with its own cutters. Paper wear and disc wear stay independent.
  • Higher media ratings than the plain 1873 - E-4, O-4 and T-5 with the separate unit, against E-3, O-3 and T-4 without it.
  • Unchanged P-4 paper performance - 3.9 x 40 mm at 43-45 sheets. You are not paying for the disc head with paper throughput.
  • Waste separation - because the heads are separate, plastic and paper waste can be kept apart for recycling rather than blended into one unsortable bin.
  • Integrated automatic oiler and touch display - carried over from the standard 1873.
  • Lifetime cutting-roller warranty - the paper head is P-4 and therefore covered.

What's in the Box

The P44i ships as one assembled unit: shredder head mounted on its collection cabinet, power cord and operating manual. HSM classes the reusable collecting bag and the P44i cardboard collection box as consumables, which means they are ordered separately - no bags or boxes are included with the machine. Budget for a starter supply with the initial order so the cabinet is usable on day one. Freight is curbside on a pallet unless you arrange inside delivery; at over 230 lb this is not a two-person carry up a stairwell.

Who Should Buy This - and Who Should Not

Buy it if your department destroys optical media regularly - archived backups, distributed software, imaging discs, recorded interviews - alongside a normal load of regulated paperwork. Running discs through a paper head works but blunts it; a separate unit is the difference between "we can" and "we should".

Do not buy it if optical media is a once-a-quarter event. The plain SECURIO P44i 1873 is rated O-3 and will handle occasional discs for a lower price. And if the discs are the point - a shelf of backup tapes, a bin of old drives - then no document shredder is the right answer; the HSM StoreEx HDS 150 or HDS 230 are purpose-built for that and destroy hard drives, which this machine cannot. For higher paper security with an OMDD head, see the P-6 1875 plus OMDD cutting unit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do paper and discs go into the same slot?

No, and that is the point of this version. The 4 x 7 mm media cutting unit is a physically separate head with its own feed. Paper goes into the 400 mm main throat; CDs, DVDs and cards go into the media unit. Because the cutters never mix, disc plastic does not accelerate wear on the paper rollers and you can keep the two waste streams separate for recycling.

Can it destroy hard drives or SSDs?

No. The separate unit is a 4 x 7 mm cutter designed for optical media and cards. Hard drives and solid state drives are outside its rating and will damage it. For drives you need a purpose-built media shredder - the HSM StoreEx HDS 150 is rated H-3 and the HDS 230 reaches H-4 or H-5 depending on the cutting head. Do not attempt drives in any document shredder.

Is the paper security level any different from the standard 1873?

No. Both are DIN 66399 P-4 with a 3.9 x 40 mm particle and both take 43-45 sheets at 80 g/m2. What changes is the media ratings: with the separate unit HSM publishes E-4, O-4 and T-5 instead of E-3, O-3 and T-4. If you only shred paper, the extra unit buys you nothing and the standard 1873 is the sensible purchase.

How much bigger and heavier is it?

Same footprint. The cabinet is still 27.56 x 23.31 x 43.5 inches (700 x 592 x 1105 mm) and the bin is still 54.2 gallons. Weight rises from 231.49 lb to 244.71 lb - about 13 lb - because of the second cutting unit. It arrives on a pallet either way and rolls on casters once positioned.

What is the throughput on discs?

HSM does not publish a discs-per-hour figure for the separate 4 x 7 mm cutting unit on the P44i, so we are not going to quote one. It is designed for steady manual feeding of one disc at a time rather than batch loading. If you need a rated hourly throughput for optical media, the StoreEx HDS 150 is specified at 4,200 CDs/DVDs per hour and the HDS 230 at 6,000 to 7,500.

Does the CD unit affect the warranty?

The lifetime cutting-roller warranty HSM applies to its P-2 to P-5 document shredders covers this machine, since the paper head is P-4. HSM does not publish separate lifetime terms for the 4 x 7 mm media unit, so treat that as covered by the standard machine warranty only. Confirm the machine warranty period in writing with your dealer before purchase.
