Description

If you buy one P44i without wanting to think hard about it, buy this one. Article 1873 cuts 3.9 x 40 mm particles - 156 mm², comfortably inside the 160 mm² ceiling for DIN 66399 P-4 - while still taking 43 to 45 sheets of 80 g/m² paper per pass. That combination covers personnel files, patient paperwork, invoices, contracts and customer records at a speed a busy department will tolerate, which is the compromise most organisations actually need.

Every P44i shares the same cabinet and drivetrain: a 15.75-inch (400 mm) intake that swallows letter, legal and A3 sheets without folding, a 54.2-gallon (205 L) pull-out collection cabinet, a 1,900 W IntelligentDrive motor, and a touch display that reports bin status and jams in plain language. Idle noise is quoted at roughly 55 dB(A). The cabinet measures 27.56 x 23.31 x 43.5 inches (700 x 592 x 1105 mm), so it clears a standard 36-inch doorway on its casters but needs a dedicated footprint rather than a corner of a copy room. What changes from article to article is the cutting head - and that is the only thing you actually need to decide.

Key Features

  • DIN 66399 P-4 particle cut - 3.9 x 40 mm, the level most written destruction policies specify for personal and financial data.
  • 43-45 sheets per pass at 80 g/m² - roughly three to four times what a typical office cross-cut machine manages, so the shredder is not the thing people wait for.
  • Integrated automatic oiler - the cutting head is lubricated by the machine on its own schedule. Particle-cut heads need oil; forgetting to apply it is the usual cause of premature failure, and this removes the decision from the user.
  • EcoSmart standby draws 0.1 W - a machine left switched on all year costs almost nothing when idle.
  • Rated E-3, F-1, O-3 and T-4 alongside P-4 - film, optical media and other data carriers are all covered by HSM's own rating rather than by assumption.
  • Lifetime cutting-roller warranty - P-4 sits inside HSM's P-2 to P-5 coverage.

What's in the Box

The P44i ships as one assembled unit: shredder head mounted on its collection cabinet, power cord and operating manual. HSM classes the reusable collecting bag and the P44i cardboard collection box as consumables, which means they are ordered separately - no bags or boxes are included with the machine. Budget for a starter supply with the initial order so the cabinet is usable on day one. Freight is curbside on a pallet unless you arrange inside delivery; at over 230 lb this is not a two-person carry up a stairwell.

Who Should Buy This - and Who Should Not

Buy it if a floor of 30 to 80 people needs to destroy regulated paperwork every day without queueing. P-4 satisfies the great majority of corporate destruction policies, and 43-45 sheets per pass means a full in-tray goes in as one handful. The automatic oiler makes it a genuinely low-attention machine, which matters when nobody owns it.

Do not buy it if you handle classified, export-controlled or trade-secret material where P-5 or P-6 is specified. Step up to the SECURIO P44i 1875, which reaches P-6 at 0.78 x 11 mm - accepting that sheet capacity falls to 17-19 and the lifetime roller warranty no longer applies. If you also need to destroy CDs and DVDs properly rather than incidentally, the 1873 with the separate 4 x 7 mm CD cutting unit is the same paper machine with a second, dedicated head. And if the paper is not sensitive at all, the P-2 1871 is faster and cheaper.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 3.9 x 40 mm really P-4?

Yes. DIN 66399 P-4 allows a maximum particle area of 160 mm2. A 3.9 x 40 mm particle is 156 mm2, so it qualifies with a small margin. This is worth checking on any shredder listing, because a 4.5 x 30 mm cut is 135 mm2 and also P-4, while several cuts marketed as "high security cross cut" are actually P-3. HSM publishes E-3, F-1, O-3, P-4 and T-4 for this article.

Does the automatic oiler need refilling, and how often?

The P44i has an integrated automatic oiler that lubricates the cutting head without operator involvement. It does draw from a reservoir that is topped up periodically with HSM shredder oil. HSM does not publish a refill interval or reservoir volume for the P44i, so we will not invent one - the machine signals on the touch display when it needs attention. Use shredder oil only; vegetable and aerosol oils gum the head.

Can I shred CDs and DVDs in it?

You can - HSM rates the paper head O-3 and lists optical media as approved - but you will be running discs through the same cutters that do your paper, which accelerates wear and produces a mixed waste stream you then have to separate for recycling. If optical media is a routine part of the job rather than an occasional one, buy the version of this machine fitted with the separate 4 x 7 mm CD cutting unit so paper and discs never share a head.

How often will we be emptying the bin?

The cabinet holds 54.2 gallons (205 L) and HSM does not publish a sheet-count for this head. Cross-cut waste packs denser than the strip cut from the 1870 and 1871, so it holds noticeably more paper by weight. A department putting a few thousand sheets a week through it will typically empty once a week. The machine signals bin-full and stops rather than jamming itself.

Will it take a stapled and clipped file straight from the cabinet?

Yes. Staples, paper clips and credit cards are all approved materials, and the rollers are solid steel. Do not feed ring binders, metal binder combs, bulldog clips or laminated pouches. Manila folders are fine but count as several sheets each against the 43-45 rating, so drop the stack size when a batch is folder-heavy.

Is this shredder NSA approved?

No. The NSA/CSS Evaluated Products List for paper shredders covers devices meeting NSA/CSS Specification 02-01, which requires a maximum particle of 1 mm x 5 mm and inclusion on the published list. This machine cuts 3.9 x 40 mm, so it is not eligible and HSM does not claim otherwise. P-4 is a commercial and regulatory standard, not a classified-material standard.

What is the difference between this and the P44i 1875?

Cutting head only. The 1873 is P-4 at 3.9 x 40 mm and takes 43-45 sheets; the 1875 is P-6 at 0.78 x 11 mm and takes 17-19. Same cabinet, same 1,900 W drive, same 400 mm intake, same 54.2-gallon bin. Going to the 1875 costs you well over half your throughput and puts the machine outside HSM's lifetime cutting-roller warranty, which covers P-2 to P-5 only. Take that step only if a policy requires it.
