Frequently Asked Questions
Is this the NSA approved model?
No. The P44i does not appear on the NSA/CSS Evaluated Products List for paper shredders dated July 2025. Its 1 x 5 mm paper cut matches the maximum particle dimensions in NSA/CSS Specification 02-01, but the specification requires both the particle size and the model's presence on the EPL. Within HSM's range it is the SECURIO P40i in L6 (1 x 5 mm) OMDD Combi form that appears on that list. If listing is a contractual requirement, buy the P40i configuration.
What is the difference between the OMDD unit and a CD unit?
Particle size and class. This machine's OMDD unit cuts to 2 x 2 mm and achieves O-6 for optical media and T-6 for data carriers. The 4 x 7 mm CD units fitted to the P-4 and P-5 models achieve O-4 and T-5. If a policy names optical media destruction at a high class, or the discs held sensitive material, the OMDD unit is what that language usually means.
Can paper and media be destroyed at the same time?
They are separate cutting units with separate waste containers on one chassis. Paper goes into the 400 mm throat and reaches the 205 litre bin; discs and cards go into the media slot and reach their own container. The design intent is that a user cannot accidentally put a disc through a P-7 paper head, which would damage it.
Does it accept staples and paper clips?
Assume not. HSM does not list staples or office clips among the materials for the 1 x 5 mm paper head, unlike the P-2, P-4 and P-5 versions of this chassis. Documents should be prepared by hand before shredding. That is normal at P-7 and should be planned into whoever handles secure destruction.
How does it compare with the P40i 1 x 5 mm OMDD version?
Identical security classes, different scale. This P44i takes 11 sheets against 9, has a 400 mm throat against 330 mm, a 205 litre bin against 145 litres, and weighs 111 kg against 78. The one thing the P40i version has that this does not is a corresponding entry on the NSA Evaluated Products List. Volume argues for the P44i; a contractual NSA listing argues for the P40i.
Is the lifetime cutting-roller warranty included?
No. HSM's lifetime warranty on the solid steel cutting rollers applies at security levels P-2 to P-5. This is a P-7 machine and carries the 3-year SECURIO machine warranty only. Given how hard a 1 x 5 mm cutting unit works, treat roller life as a real line in your total cost of ownership rather than assuming it is covered indefinitely.
What consumables will we need to reorder?
A liner for the 205 litre paper container, either the HSM reusable collecting bag or the P44i cardboard disposal box, and HSM cutting block special oil to refill the automatic oiler. The OMDD unit's waste container is emptied directly. None of these are supplied with the machine, so include the first order with the shredder.
