Frequently Asked Questions
What does metal detection actually protect against?
HSM describes it as protecting the cutting unit: if metal parts such as staples are inserted, the machine stops so they can be removed before operation continues. On a 1 x 5 mm P-7 head, which HSM does not rate for staples or paper clips, that is meaningful insurance rather than a convenience feature. It is an interlock, not a filter, so it stops the machine rather than separating the metal out.
Does this mean I can shred stapled documents?
No, and it is important not to read it that way. HSM lists paper only for the P-7 cutting head on this article, and the detector's job is to halt the machine when metal appears. Documents should still be prepared. The detector protects you from what gets missed, not from a policy of not preparing paperwork at all.
How is it different from article 1874123M?
Metal detection is the functional difference. Both are P-7 at 1 x 5 mm with 11 sheets per pass, both carry the separate 2 x 2 mm OMDD unit at O-6 and T-6, and both use the 400 mm throat, 205 litre bin and 1900 W drive. HSM publishes a different weight for the two articles and we have raised that with the manufacturer rather than reconcile the figures ourselves.
Is it NSA approved?
No. The SECURIO P44i does not appear on the NSA/CSS Evaluated Products List for paper shredders dated July 2025. The 1 x 5 mm cut matches the maximum particle in NSA/CSS Specification 02-01, but that specification also requires the model to be listed. The HSM entry on that list is the SECURIO P40i L6 (1 x 5 mm) OMDD Combi. Confirm the current EPL with your security officer before relying on any claim of approval.
What can the OMDD unit destroy?
HSM lists CDs and DVDs and credit and loyalty cards for the 2 x 2 mm media unit on this article, giving O-6 for optical media and T-6 for data carriers. They go into a dedicated waste container rather than the paper bin. Do not assume solid-state media such as USB sticks or SSDs are covered; specify those separately if you need them destroyed.
What warranty and maintenance should we budget for?
A 3-year HSM SECURIO machine warranty. The lifetime cutting-roller warranty covers P-2 to P-5 and does not apply at P-7. Routine maintenance is refilling the automatic oiler with HSM cutting block special oil, emptying the 205 litre paper container and the separate media container, and clearing the intake when the metal detector trips. Assume roller wear is a real cost on a 1 x 5 mm unit.
