Frequently Asked Questions
Is this machine NSA approved?
No. It cuts to 1 x 5 mm, which matches the maximum particle dimensions in NSA/CSS Specification 02-01, but approval also requires the specific model to appear on the NSA Evaluated Products List, and the SECURIO P44i does not appear on the July 2025 edition. The HSM machine that does appear is the SECURIO P40i in its L6 (1 x 5 mm) OMDD Combi configuration. Anyone telling you a P-7 rating by itself means NSA approval is wrong.
Can it shred anything other than paper?
HSM lists paper only for this article, and the security classes quoted are F-3 and P-7 with no optical or data-carrier class. Do not feed credit cards, CDs, DVDs or USB sticks into it. If you need media destruction on the same machine, the P44i 1 x 5 mm with the separate 2 x 2 mm OMDD unit adds a dedicated media head at O-6 and T-6.
Do staples have to come out first?
Assume yes. Staples and office clips are not among the materials HSM lists for this article, unlike the P-2, P-4 and P-5 versions of the same chassis. A 1 x 5 mm cutting unit has very fine geometry and metal is a real hazard to it. Preparation time is a normal part of high-security shredding and should be built into whoever's job this is.
Why is capacity only 11 sheets?
Because of how much cutting a P-7 particle requires. Each sheet is reduced to 5 mm2 fragments rather than the 28.5 mm2 of the P-5 version, which is far more cuts and far more load on the drive. HSM quotes 11 sheets at 80 g/m2 for this article. Note that HSM's range brochure quotes capacities at 70 g/m2 and reads roughly 15 percent higher, so figures from different sources will not always match.
How does it compare with the P40i 1 x 5 mm?
Same cut, same class, larger machine. This P44i takes 11 sheets against 9, has a 400 mm throat against 330 mm and a 205 litre bin against 145 litres, and weighs 105 kg against 78. The P40i version is the one that carries an OMDD media unit and appears on the NSA list. Choose the P44i for volume and paper width; choose the P40i configuration if the NSA listing or media destruction is what matters.
What warranty does it carry?
The 3-year HSM SECURIO machine warranty. HSM's lifetime warranty on the solid steel cutting rollers covers security levels P-2 to P-5 only, so a P-7 machine falls outside it. That is a deliberate structure across the SECURIO range rather than something specific to this article, but it is worth knowing before you compare total cost against a P-5 model.
How much space and what handling does it need?
The machine measures 700 x 592 x 1105 mm and weighs 105 kg. Allow clearance in front for feeding and at least the depth of the container for emptying. Delivery and positioning need two people and a planned route; this is not a unit that gets moved on a whim once installed.
