Description

This is the standard P-4 SECURIO P40i with a second, physically separate cutting head for optical media and cards. Paper goes through the 4.5 x 30 mm rollers into the 145 litre container; CDs, DVDs, credit and loyalty cards and floppy disks go through a dedicated 4 x 7 mm unit into their own small waste bin. Keeping the two streams apart is the entire reason this version exists. It lifts the optical-media class from O-3 to O-4 and the data-carrier class from T-4 to T-5, and it means a shredding certificate can distinguish paper waste from media waste without anyone sorting through a mixed bin.

Key Features

  • Separate 4 x 7 mm media cutting unit. Discs and cards are destroyed by their own head with its own waste container, not pushed through the paper rollers. Optical class rises to O-4 and data carriers to T-5.
  • Two waste streams, two containers. Shredded media does not contaminate the paper bin, so paper waste stays recyclable and media waste can be disposed of under a separate procedure.
  • P-4 paper cut at 34 to 36 sheets. The paper side is unchanged from the standard HSM1883: 4.5 x 30 mm particles, roughly 135 mm2, well inside the P-4 limit.
  • 330 mm intake for the paper head. Letter, legal, tabloid, A4 and A3 short edge, no folding.
  • IntelligentDrive with three operating modes. Throughput, noise or energy bias, selected on the machine rather than fixed at the factory.
  • Integrated automatic oiler. The paper cutting rollers are lubricated automatically; you refill rather than remember.
  • Lifetime cutting-roller warranty. P-4 falls inside HSM's lifetime roller cover, with a 3-year machine warranty on top.

Sheet capacities are HSM's per-model figures at 80 g/m2 A4. HSM's range brochure quotes capacity at 70 g/m2, which reads roughly 15 percent higher, so figures quoted elsewhere may not match.

What's in the Box

The machine arrives with both cutting units fitted: the paper head over the 145 litre container and the separate 4 x 7 mm media unit with its own waste container. The automatic oiler is factory-installed. Collection bags and cardboard disposal boxes for the main container are not included and are ordered separately, as is HSM cutting block special oil.

Who Should Buy This - and Who Should Not

Buy it if you destroy optical media or payment cards regularly and need to show it was done to a defined class, or if you simply want media fragments kept out of a paper stream that gets recycled. It costs meaningfully more than the plain HSM1883 and the paper performance is identical, so the media head has to be worth something to you.

Do not buy it if you shred a handful of discs a year. The standard SECURIO P40i 4.5 x 30 mm (HSM1883) already accepts CDs through the paper throat at class O-3 and costs less. And if the discs hold classified or genuinely high-value data, O-4 at 4 x 7 mm is not the right answer either: the P40i 1 x 5 mm with the 2 x 2 mm OMDD unit reaches O-6 and P-7 and is the configuration that appears on the NSA Evaluated Products List.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the CD unit and the OMDD unit?

Particle size and class. This machine's separate media head cuts to 4 x 7 mm and earns O-4 for optical media and T-5 for data carriers. The OMDD unit fitted to the 1 x 5 mm P40i cuts to 2 x 2 mm and earns O-6 and T-6. OMDD is what you buy when a policy names optical media destruction explicitly or when the discs held sensitive data; the 4 x 7 mm unit is the sensible middle ground for routine commercial media.

Does the media unit run at the same time as the paper head?

They are separate cutting units on one machine with separate waste containers. Feed paper into the main throat and media into the media slot. The point of the design is that a user does not have to think about it: discs never enter the paper rollers, and paper waste in the 145 litre bin stays free of plastic and metallised film.

Is the paper capacity reduced by the second cutting unit?

No. The paper head is the same 4.5 x 30 mm unit as the standard HSM1883, and HSM quotes 34 to 36 sheets at 80 g/m2 for both. The extra 6 kg of machine weight is the media unit and its container, not a change to the paper drive.

Will it destroy credit cards with embedded chips?

Yes. HSM lists credit and loyalty cards among the materials for the separate media unit, and 4 x 7 mm fragments break the chip and the magnetic stripe. Feed cards one at a time into the media slot rather than the paper throat.

Can I retrofit this media unit to a P40i I already own?

Treat that as a no unless HSM confirms otherwise for your specific article. The separate cutting unit versions are built as distinct articles with their own order numbers and their own waste container, and they weigh 6 kg more. If you already own a plain P40i and need media destruction, the practical routes are a standalone media shredder or replacing the machine.

Is the shredded media recyclable with the paper?

That is exactly what this configuration is designed to avoid. Optical media and card fragments go into their own container so the 145 litre paper bin stays a clean paper stream. Handle media waste according to your local e-waste route; most paper recyclers will reject a load contaminated with polycarbonate and metallised film.
