Description

Most departments that shred personal data end up on a P-4 machine, and within HSM's P40i chassis this 4.5 x 30 mm version is that machine. Each sheet is reduced to particles of about 135 mm2, comfortably inside the 160 mm2 ceiling DIN 66399 sets for P-4, and it still accepts 34 to 36 sheets of 80 g/m2 paper at a time. That combination is why it outsells every other P40i variant: it is the point where the security rating stops being an argument with your compliance officer and the throughput is still high enough that nobody avoids the machine.

Key Features

  • P-4 cross cut at departmental speed. 34 to 36 sheets per pass is unusually high for a P-4 machine of this footprint. Compliance and convenience rarely coexist this well.
  • Handles mixed office waste. Staples, paper clips, credit and EC cards, CDs, DVDs and floppy disks all go through the paper head, so users do not have to sort waste before shredding.
  • 330 mm intake. Letter, legal, tabloid, A4 and A3 all feed short edge without folding.
  • IntelligentDrive, three operating modes. You can tune the machine towards throughput, low noise or low energy consumption rather than accepting one fixed behaviour.
  • Automatic paper-jam prevention. The control system detects an over-thick stack as it enters and reacts before the rollers stall, instead of leaving a user to reverse a jam by hand.
  • Integrated automatic oiler. Roller lubrication is handled by the machine; you refill it rather than schedule it.
  • 145 litre container. 38.3 gallons of capacity means far fewer interruptions than the wastebasket-sized bins on desk-side shredders.
  • Lifetime cutting-roller warranty. P-4 sits inside HSM's lifetime roller cover, alongside the 3-year machine warranty.

Sheet capacities are HSM's per-model figures at 80 g/m2 A4. HSM's range brochure quotes capacity at 70 g/m2, which reads roughly 15 percent higher, so figures quoted elsewhere may not match.

What's in the Box

Supplied as a complete floor-standing machine with the 145 litre container and the factory-fitted automatic oiler. Collection bags and cardboard disposal boxes are not supplied with the shredder; the reusable collecting bag and the P36i/P40i cardboard box are ordered as consumables, as is the HSM cutting block special oil used to top up the oiler.

Who Should Buy This - and Who Should Not

Buy it if you shred customer files, HR paperwork, invoices, patient correspondence or anything else with names attached, and you want one machine the whole floor can use without a sorting rule. P-4 satisfies most written destruction policies and 34 to 36 sheets keeps queues short.

Do not buy it if your policy specifies P-5 or higher, or if the material is commercially sensitive enough that 4.5 x 30 mm particles feel generous. The SECURIO P44i 1.9 x 15 mm (HSM1872) gives you P-5 on a larger chassis with a 400 mm throat, and the P40i 0.78 x 11 mm (HSM1885) gives you P-6 in this same footprint, at the cost of dropping to 13 to 15 sheets. If optical media destruction needs its own defensible class, the 4.5 x 30 mm version with the separate 4 x 7 mm CD cutting unit is the same machine with a second head bolted on.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is P-4 enough for HIPAA, FERPA or GLBA paperwork?

For paper records it is the level most written destruction policies land on, and P-4 is widely accepted for personal data. None of those statutes names a DIN class directly; they require destruction such that the information cannot practicably be read or reconstructed. P-4 particles of roughly 135 mm2 meet that test in normal commercial judgement. If your own policy or a client contract specifies P-5 or finer, this machine will not satisfy it and you should move to the P44i 1.9 x 15 mm.

How many people can share this before it becomes a bottleneck?

It depends on how much each of them shreds, but the design intent is a department rather than a desk. A 330 mm throat, 34 to 36 sheets per pass and a 145 litre bin mean the limiting factor is usually walking distance, not the machine. Where it does bottleneck is a single large purge: continuous heavy feeding of a few reams is what this chassis is built for, but scheduling a purge outside busy hours is still sensible.

Can it shred credit cards, CDs and DVDs?

Yes, through the same throat as paper. HSM rates this article O-3 for optical media and T-4 for data carriers. The discs come out in cross-cut fragments rather than the small particles a dedicated media head produces. If you destroy optical media routinely, or need a higher optical class on paper, the version with the separate 4 x 7 mm CD cutting unit keeps media waste in its own container and lifts the optical class to O-4.

Do I need to remove staples and paper clips first?

No. HSM lists both among the accepted materials, and the cutting rollers are solid steel, induction hardened. Skipping the de-stapling step is usually the single largest time saving in a shredding routine. Remove bulldog clips, ring binder mechanisms and plastic wallets, and do not feed laminated sheets.

What is the difference between this and the P40i 1.9 x 15 mm?

Cut size, security class and capacity. The 1.9 x 15 mm article is P-5 with 19 to 21 sheets per pass; this one is P-4 with 34 to 36. Chassis, throat, bin, motor, footprint and warranty are identical. You are choosing between roughly 80 percent more throughput and one full security class.

How noisy is it in an open-plan office?

HSM quotes approximately 55 dB(A) at idle. That is a quiet-office figure and it rises under load, as it does on any shredder with a 1300 W drive. In practice a machine of this class is fine in a copy room or work area and noticeable if you put it next to someone's desk.

Does the bin take a bag, and is one included?

The 145 litre container can be lined with an HSM reusable collecting bag or used with the P36i/P40i cardboard disposal box. Neither is supplied with the shredder. Decide before delivery which consumable you want to standardise on, because reordering the wrong format for this chassis is the most common ordering error on these machines.
