Description

The SECURIO P40i in 5.8 mm strip cut is the volume workhorse of the P40i range: it swallows 56 to 58 sheets of 80 g/m2 paper in a single pass, more than any other P40i configuration, and it is the only one rated DIN 66399 P-2. That is the trade this machine asks you to make. You are buying throughput and running cost, not confidentiality. If the paper leaving your department is internal correspondence, drafts, print overruns and superseded manuals, this is the cheapest way into HSM's departmental chassis. If it carries names, account numbers or medical detail, buy a different P40i.

Key Features

  • 56-58 sheets in one pass. Strip cut removes far less material than a particle cut, so the same 1300 W drive handles roughly a 60 percent thicker stack than the P-4 version. Staff stop splitting reams into small handfuls, which is where most shredding time actually goes.
  • 330 mm intake. Letter, legal, A4 and A3 fed short edge all clear the throat without folding. Folding is the single biggest cause of jams in shared machines.
  • IntelligentDrive with three operating modes. The drive electronics let you bias the machine towards speed, quietness or energy use rather than running one fixed profile.
  • Integrated automatic oiler. The cutting rollers are oiled by the machine. There is no manual oiling schedule to forget, which matters on a strip-cut unit that will see heavy duty.
  • 4.3-inch touch display. Multi-language menu with plain status messages instead of a row of coloured LEDs you have to look up.
  • EcoSmart standby. Standby draw is 0.1 W, so a machine left switched on overnight and at weekends costs effectively nothing.
  • Lifetime cutting-roller warranty. The induction-hardened solid steel rollers carry HSM's lifetime warranty at this security level, on top of the 3-year machine warranty.

Sheet capacities are HSM's per-model figures at 80 g/m2 A4. HSM's range brochure quotes capacity at 70 g/m2, which reads roughly 15 percent higher, so figures quoted elsewhere may not match.

What's in the Box

The shredder ships as a floor-standing unit with the 145 litre collection container and the integrated automatic oiler already fitted. Collection bags and cardboard disposal boxes are consumables and are not included; order the reusable collecting bag or the P36i/P40i cardboard box separately. Cutting block special oil for refilling the oiler is also a separate order.

Who Should Buy This - and Who Should Not

Buy it if your department destroys large quantities of low-sensitivity paper and the bottleneck is how long someone stands at the machine. At 56 to 58 sheets a pass it is roughly twice as fast to load as the 4.5 x 30 mm version.

Do not buy it if the material is covered by HIPAA, GLBA, FERPA or a state breach-notification statute. P-2 produces strips wide enough that reconstruction is a realistic exercise, and most privacy programmes will not accept it for personal data. The SECURIO P40i 4.5 x 30 mm (HSM1883, P-4) is the usual substitute and still manages 34 to 36 sheets; the P44i 1.9 x 15 mm (HSM1872, P-5) is the step up if you want a rating that survives an audit without argument.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is DIN 66399 P-2 good enough for documents containing personal data?

Generally no. P-2 allows particles up to 800 mm2, which on this machine means full-width 5.8 mm strips. Strips of that width preserve whole lines of text and can be reassembled with effort. Most privacy and records-retention policies written against HIPAA, GLBA or state breach laws call for P-4 or finer for personal data. Use this machine for internal drafts, print overruns, obsolete manuals and marketing waste, and route anything with names, account numbers or health information to a P-4, P-5 or higher machine.

Can it shred staples and paper clips?

Yes. HSM lists staples and office clips among the materials this model accepts, and the solid steel cutting rollers are induction-hardened for it. You do not need to strip documents before shredding, which is normally the slowest part of the job. Bulldog clips, ring binders, laminated sheets and hanging-file hardware are a different matter and should be removed first.

Will legal and tabloid paper fit?

Yes. The intake is 330 mm wide. US legal (8.5 x 14 in) and tabloid (11 x 17 in) both enter short edge first with room to spare, as do A4 and A3. Nothing needs folding, which is the main thing that causes jams on shared departmental machines.

Does it shred CDs and DVDs?

HSM lists CD/DVD and floppy disks among the accepted materials for this article, and the machine carries an O-2 optical-media class. That is a low class: the discs are reduced to strips, not particles. If destroying optical media to a defensible standard is part of the job, choose a model with the separate OMDD or CD cutting unit rather than feeding discs through the paper head.

How often will the 145 litre bin need emptying?

That depends entirely on your volume, and we will not invent a figure. The container holds 145 litres (38.3 US gallons), which is large for a departmental machine, and strip-cut waste is bulkier per sheet than particle-cut waste, so it fills faster than the finer P40i variants at the same page count. Sites running continuously usually settle on a fixed daily or twice-weekly empty rather than waiting for the machine to stop.

Is this shredder NSA approved?

No. The NSA/CSS Evaluated Products List for paper shredders covers high-security machines producing particles no larger than 1 mm x 5 mm. A P-2 strip-cut machine is not in that category and this model does not appear on the list. If you need an NSA-listed machine, look at the SECURIO P40i in the 1 x 5 mm OMDD Combi configuration instead.

What does the warranty actually cover?

HSM gives a 3-year warranty on SECURIO document shredders and a lifetime warranty on the solid steel cutting rollers at security levels P-2 to P-5. This machine is P-2, so it falls inside the lifetime roller cover. Wear parts and consumables such as collection bags, cardboard boxes and cutting block oil are not covered.

Does it need manual oiling?

No. An automatic oiler is built into the machine and lubricates the cutting rollers during operation. You refill the oiler with HSM cutting block special oil rather than spraying or wiping the rollers by hand. Skipping refills on a high-throughput strip-cut machine is the fastest route to reduced capacity and jamming.
