The HSM SECURIO P40i 1/4 inch strip cut (article 1881121) is a floor-standing departmental shredder that slices paper into 5.8 mm strips at DIN 66399 security level P-2 and takes 56-58 sheets of 80 g/m² paper per feed. It is built for departments that need to get rid of large amounts of low-sensitivity paper quickly, not for records that carry personal or financial data.

What a 5.8 mm strip buys you, and what it costs

A strip head only cuts lengthwise, so it removes far less material per sheet than a particle head. That is why the same P40i chassis that manages 34-36 sheets in its P-4 form can take 56-58 sheets here. For a mailroom, print room or records office clearing out drafts, overruns and superseded manuals, the time saved at the feed opening is the real benefit.

The cost is security. DIN 66399 allows P-2 particles up to 800 mm², and a full-length 5.8 mm strip still carries readable lines of text. HSM's full rating for this article is E-2, O-2, P-2 and T-2, which is a basic level across paper, optical media and data carriers. Treat it as a tidy way to dispose of internal paperwork rather than a privacy control.

Day-to-day running of the 1881

The 13 in opening takes letter, legal and A4 without folding, and A3 fed short edge. Staples, paper clips and credit or EC cards can go in with the paper, and HSM also lists CDs, DVDs and floppy disks for this head, although they come out as coarse strips. The induction-hardened solid steel rollers are oiled by the machine itself; your only job is to refill the reservoir with HSM cutting block special oil.

A 4.3-inch touch display shows status messages in several languages, and the IntelligentDrive lets you favor speed, lower noise or lower energy use. When idle, the machine drops into EcoSmart standby at 0.1 W. The 145 liter container is generous, but strip waste is bulky, so it fills faster per sheet than the cross-cut versions. Line it with an HSM reusable collecting bag or the P36i/P40i cardboard disposal box; neither is included.

Is the 1881 the right P40i for you?

It suits a department whose shredding is mostly volume: internal correspondence, misprints, old catalogs and manuals, where the bottleneck is how long someone stands at the machine. Look elsewhere if the paper names customers, patients or employees, or carries account numbers. Privacy rules and most written destruction policies expect P-4 or finer, and the HSM1883 on this same chassis delivers that.
