Frequently Asked Questions
What does the OMDD unit actually destroy, and to what size?
It cuts optical media and cards to 2 x 2 mm particles into a dedicated waste container. HSM lists CDs and DVDs, credit and loyalty cards, and floppy disks for this unit. The resulting classes on this article are O-6 for optical media and T-6 for data carriers, which are the top classes DIN 66399 defines for those categories.
Is this NSA approved for classified media?
No. Meeting NSA/CSS 02-01 requires both a maximum 1 mm x 5 mm particle and the specific model being listed on the NSA Evaluated Products List. This article's paper cut is 0.78 x 11 mm, which is longer than 5 mm, and it does not appear on the EPL. In the P40i family the 1 x 5 mm OMDD Combi configuration is the one that appears on the July 2025 list. Confirm the current EPL with your security officer before buying for classified destruction.
How is this different from the plain 0.78 x 11 mm P40i?
The media unit, and only the media unit. The paper head, throat, bin, motor, footprint, noise and P-6 rating are identical. The plain article does not list CDs or DVDs as accepted materials at all. This one adds a second head, a second waste container, an O-6 and T-6 class, and about 6 kg of machine weight.
Can I feed discs into the paper throat instead?
No, and there is no reason to. The media unit exists so that plastic and metallised film never enter the paper rollers. Mixing them contaminates the paper waste stream, which is why most paper recyclers reject shredder waste that has had discs put through it.
How many sheets does it take at once?
13 to 15 sheets of 80 g/m2 paper, the same as the plain P-6 article. HSM quotes capacity at 80 g/m2 on its per-model data sheets; the range brochure quotes at 70 g/m2 and reads roughly 15 percent higher, so make sure you are comparing like with like when checking against another dealer's figure.
Does the lifetime cutting-roller warranty apply here?
No. HSM's lifetime warranty on the solid steel cutting rollers runs from P-2 to P-5. This is a P-6 machine, so it carries the 3-year SECURIO machine warranty without the lifetime roller element. If long-term roller cover matters more to you than the security class, the P-4 and P-5 members of this family are backed differently.
What consumables does it need?
A liner for the 145 litre paper container, either the HSM reusable collecting bag or the P36i/P40i cardboard disposal box, and HSM cutting block special oil to refill the automatic oiler. The media unit's waste container is emptied directly. None of these consumables ship with the machine, so order the first batch with it.
