Description

A common mistake with this machine is to file it as P-5. It is not. At 0.78 x 11 mm the particle area is about 8.6 mm2, under the 10 mm2 ceiling for P-6, and the 0.78 mm width is inside the 1 mm limit that class also imposes. This is a genuine P-6 micro-cut shredder in a departmental chassis, and it is the configuration to specify when a policy or a client contract asks for P-6 in writing. The price of that rating is capacity: 13 to 15 sheets a pass against 34 to 36 on the P-4 version of the same machine.

Key Features

  • True P-6 micro cut. 0.78 x 11 mm particles, roughly 8.6 mm2, satisfying both the area and the 1 mm maximum-width condition DIN 66399 sets for P-6.
  • Departmental chassis, not a desk-side unit. 330 mm throat, 145 litre container and a 1300 W drive, so a high-security rating does not force you onto a small machine.
  • Handles staples and paper clips. Even at P-6 the solid steel rollers take stapled and clipped documents, so users are not asked to prepare paperwork by hand.
  • IntelligentDrive with three operating modes. Useful on a P-6 machine, where the difference between a throughput bias and a quiet bias is noticeable.
  • Automatic paper-jam prevention. The system recognises an over-thick stack on entry. On a 13 to 15 sheet machine users will over-feed, and this is what stops that becoming a service call.
  • Integrated automatic oiler. Micro-cut rollers are far more sensitive to lubrication than strip-cut rollers. Automating it removes the most commonly skipped maintenance task.
  • 4.3-inch touch display and EcoSmart standby. Multi-language operation with 0.1 W standby draw.

Sheet capacities are HSM's per-model figures at 80 g/m2 A4. HSM's range brochure quotes capacity at 70 g/m2, which reads roughly 15 percent higher, so figures quoted elsewhere may not match.

What's in the Box

Delivered as a floor-standing machine with the 145 litre container and factory-fitted automatic oiler. Collection bags and cardboard disposal boxes are not included. Order the reusable collecting bag or the P36i/P40i cardboard box, plus HSM cutting block special oil for oiler refills, as separate items.

Who Should Buy This - and Who Should Not

Buy it if a written requirement names P-6, or you handle research data, legal discovery, pre-announcement financial material or personnel investigations where P-4 would be hard to defend. It gives you that class without dropping to a small-office machine.

Do not buy it if your volume is high and your actual requirement is P-4 or P-5. Going from 34 to 36 sheets down to 13 to 15 changes how people behave: a queue forms, and the shredder starts getting avoided. The SECURIO P40i 4.5 x 30 mm (HSM1883) or the P44i 1.9 x 15 mm (HSM1872, P-5) are the honest alternatives. Two further things to know before ordering: HSM's lifetime cutting-roller warranty stops at P-5, so a P-6 machine carries the 3-year machine warranty only; and this article does not include a media cutting unit, so CDs and DVDs are not listed as accepted materials. If you need both P-6 paper and media destruction, choose the version with the separate 2 x 2 mm OMDD unit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 0.78 x 11 mm P-5 or P-6?

P-6. This trips people up because 0.78 x 11 mm looks longer than a typical P-6 particle. Work the arithmetic: 0.78 x 11 is 8.58 mm2, which is inside the 10 mm2 maximum for P-6 and well under the 30 mm2 allowed for P-5. DIN 66399 also caps P-6 strip width at 1 mm, and 0.78 mm clears that. HSM's own data sheet for article 1885121 states E-5 | F-3 | P-6 | T-6.

Can this machine shred CDs and DVDs?

Not as supplied. HSM lists paper, staples, paper clips and credit or EC cards for this article, and no optical-media class is quoted for it. If you need optical media destroyed on the same machine, the P40i 0.78 x 11 mm with the separate 2 x 2 mm OMDD cutting unit adds O-6 and its own media waste container. Do not improvise by feeding discs through a P-6 paper head.

Why is the capacity only 13 to 15 sheets when the P-4 version does 34 to 36?

Because a P-6 cut removes vastly more material. Each sheet is reduced to roughly 8.6 mm2 particles rather than 135 mm2 ones, which is many more cuts per sheet and much more work for the same 1300 W drive. Every manufacturer's range shows this pattern. If your paperwork volume is high, the security class you choose determines your throughput far more than the model you choose.

Does the lifetime cutting-roller warranty apply?

No, and this is worth knowing before you order. HSM's lifetime warranty on the solid steel cutting rollers covers security levels P-2 to P-5. A P-6 machine sits outside it and carries the standard 3-year SECURIO machine warranty. That is not a defect in this model, it is how HSM structures cover across the range, but it does mean the P-4 and P-5 siblings are backed differently.

Is this shredder NSA approved?

No. NSA/CSS Specification 02-01 requires a maximum particle of 1 mm x 5 mm and the specific model to be listed on the NSA Evaluated Products List. At 0.78 x 11 mm this machine exceeds the 5 mm length limit, and it does not appear on the list. Within the P40i family it is the 1 x 5 mm OMDD Combi configuration that appears on the July 2025 EPL, not this one.

Does it still take stapled documents at this cut size?

Yes. HSM lists staples and office clips among the accepted materials for article 1885121. That is genuinely useful at P-6, because many high-security shredders in this class require paper to be prepared by hand first. Remove bulldog clips, binder mechanisms and plastic wallets.

How loud is it and how big is it?

HSM quotes approximately 55 dB(A) at idle, and the machine measures 580 x 550 x 1020 mm and weighs 72 kg. Plan for a copy room or dedicated corner rather than a desk. At 72 kg it is not a machine that gets moved around casually once positioned.
