Description

This is the highest-security machine in the P40i range and the only one in it with a credible claim to government work. Paper is reduced to 1 x 5 mm particles, exactly the maximum dimensions NSA/CSS Specification 02-01 permits, giving DIN 66399 P-7, and a separate 2 x 2 mm OMDD unit destroys optical media and cards at O-6 into its own container. HSM's SECURIO P40i in its L6 (1 x 5 mm) OMDD Combi form appears on the NSA/CSS Evaluated Products List for paper shredders dated July 2025. Verify the current edition of that list and the exact model designation with your security officer before you buy for classified destruction, because EPL listings are revised and a dimension match on its own is not approval.

Key Features

  • 1 x 5 mm particle cut, DIN 66399 P-7. 5 mm2 per particle with a 1 mm width, at the limit of the strictest paper class the standard defines. There is no class above P-7.
  • Separate 2 x 2 mm OMDD cutting unit. Optical media, credit and loyalty cards and floppy disks destroyed to O-6 and T-6 in a dedicated waste container, away from the paper stream.
  • Departmental chassis at the top security class. 330 mm throat, 145 litre bin and a 1300 W IntelligentDrive. Most P-7 machines are considerably smaller.
  • Integrated automatic oiler. At 1 x 5 mm the cutting rollers do an enormous amount of work per sheet. Automatic lubrication is not a luxury on this configuration, it is what keeps it running.
  • Automatic paper-jam prevention. With a nine-sheet limit users will over-feed. The control system detects an over-thick stack on entry rather than after the rollers stall.
  • Two waste streams. Paper waste in the 145 litre container stays a clean paper stream; media fragments go to their own bin.
  • 4.3-inch touch display and EcoSmart standby. Multi-language operation, 0.1 W standby.

Sheet capacities are HSM's per-model figures at 80 g/m2 A4. HSM's range brochure quotes capacity at 70 g/m2, which reads roughly 15 percent higher, so figures quoted elsewhere may not match.

What's in the Box

Delivered with both cutting units fitted, the 145 litre paper container, the separate OMDD waste container and the factory-installed automatic oiler. Collection bags and cardboard disposal boxes are not included; order the reusable collecting bag or the P36i/P40i cardboard box and HSM cutting block special oil alongside the machine.

Who Should Buy This - and Who Should Not

Buy it if you are destroying classified, export-controlled or otherwise top-tier material and need P-7 paper plus O-6 media from one unit, with a chassis big enough for a whole office rather than one desk. Within the P40i family this is the article that appears on the NSA list.

Do not buy it if your requirement is commercial confidentiality rather than national security. Nine sheets per pass is a hard operational limit; the P-6 version of the same machine does 13 to 15, and the P-4 version does 34 to 36. Buying P-7 for ordinary customer records will slow your department down without making anyone materially safer. Also note that HSM's lifetime cutting-roller warranty covers P-2 to P-5 only, so this machine carries the 3-year machine warranty alone, and HSM does not list staples or paper clips among the accepted materials for the P-7 paper head, so documents need preparing by hand.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this shredder NSA approved?

The SECURIO P40i in its L6 (1 x 5 mm) OMDD Combi configuration appears on the NSA/CSS Evaluated Products List for paper shredders dated July 2025, and this article is that configuration. Two caveats matter. The EPL is reissued periodically and listings change, and approval attaches to the exact model designation, not to a particle size. Check the current list and confirm the designation with your security officer or contracting officer before relying on it. A P-7 rating alone never constitutes NSA approval.

Do I have to remove staples and paper clips?

Yes, assume so. HSM lists paper as the material for the 1 x 5 mm paper head on this article and does not list staples or office clips, unlike the P-2, P-4, P-5 and P-6 versions of the same chassis. A 1 x 5 mm cutting unit has very fine teeth and metal is a genuine risk to it. Budget for the preparation time; on high-security shredding it is normal.

Why only nine sheets when the P-4 model takes 34 to 36?

Because the machine is doing roughly 27 times as much cutting per sheet. A P-4 particle is around 135 mm2; a P-7 particle is 5 mm2. The same 1300 W drive cannot push a thick stack through that many cutting edges. This is inherent to the security class rather than a limitation of the P40i, and every manufacturer's P-7 range shows the same figures.

What does the OMDD unit destroy and to what class?

It reduces optical media and cards to 2 x 2 mm particles into a separate waste container, giving this article O-6 for optical media and T-6 for data carriers. HSM lists CDs and DVDs, credit and loyalty cards and floppy disks. Feeding discs through the paper head instead is not an option and would damage a P-7 cutting unit.

How does it compare to the P44i 1 x 5 mm with OMDD?

Same security classes, bigger machine. The P44i version cuts to the same 1 x 5 mm at P-7 with the same 2 x 2 mm OMDD unit, but takes 11 sheets rather than 9, has a 400 mm throat instead of 330 mm and a 205 litre bin instead of 145 litres. Choose the P44i if volume or paper width drives the decision. Choose this P40i if footprint matters, or if the NSA listing does, because the EPL entry we can verify is for the P40i.

Does the lifetime cutting-roller warranty apply?

No. HSM's lifetime warranty on the solid steel cutting rollers covers security levels P-2 to P-5. At P-7 this machine carries the 3-year SECURIO machine warranty only. Given how hard a 1 x 5 mm cutting unit works, factor roller life into your total cost rather than assuming lifetime cover.

Can it run continuously through a large purge?

It is a continuous-duty departmental machine with a 1300 W IntelligentDrive and a 145 litre bin, so it is not limited to short bursts the way a desk-side unit is. The practical limit on a purge is the nine-sheet feed and the preparation work of removing staples. Plan a large P-7 purge as a scheduled task with someone assigned to it, not as something people fit in between meetings.
