Frequently Asked Questions
Is this machine on the NSA Evaluated Products List?
We cannot confirm that mapping and will not claim it. The NSA/CSS EPL for Paper Shredders, January 2026 edition, lists "Securio P40i (L6) Combi" under HSM of America. This article is the P40i L6 with metal detection and a separate OMDD unit, which is plausibly that entry, but the EPL names a configuration and we have not seen HSM's article number against it. If your procurement requires an EPL-listed shredder, ask HSM of America to confirm article 1884121N in writing, or buy the P36i L6 OMDD Combo (1854123S), which matches its EPL entry by name.
What does the metal detection actually do?
HSM designates this as the metal-detection article and positions the feature as protection for the cutting head. HSM does not publish the detection threshold, the minimum object size or the precise stop behaviour in the per-model datasheet, so we are not going to describe them. It does not change the security class or the sheet capacity. Ask us before ordering if you need the technical detail and we will get it from HSM of America.
Can I feed stapled documents because it has metal detection?
No. HSM lists paper only as the rated material for the P-7 cutting unit on this article. Detection is a backstop for the fastening someone missed, not permission to stop de-stapling. Treat the preparation step as mandatory and the detection as insurance.
What can the OMDD unit destroy?
CDs, DVDs, credit and loyalty cards and floppy disks, reduced to 2 x 2 mm particles in a dedicated waste container separate from the paper bin. That is a finer result than the 4 x 7 mm media units on the P-4 and P-5 machines in this family. It is not a hard drive destroyer — drives, SSDs and tape cartridges need purpose-built equipment.
Why is nine sheets per pass so much lower than the P-5 P40i?
Because a 1 x 5 mm particle is 5 mm² against 28.5 mm² for the P-5 machine, so the head does roughly six times the cutting work per sheet. Nine sheets at 80 g/m² is HSM's own figure. If that throughput will not support your workload, the honest answer is that P-7 is the wrong class for it, not that you need a bigger P-7 machine.
What warranty applies?
Three years on the machine. HSM's five-year machine warranty and its lifetime warranty on the solid steel cutting rollers apply to SECURIO C, B and P series shredders in security levels P-2 to P-5 only, and a P-7 machine sits outside that band. Given the price of this configuration, it is worth asking about an extended service agreement at the point of order.
How does it compare with the P36i L6 OMDD Combo?
Both are 1 x 5 mm P-7 machines with a 2 x 2 mm OMDD unit in the same 145-litre cabinet. The P36i version (1854123S) uses a 1,000 W motor at 8 sheets per pass and is the configuration named on the January 2026 NSA EPL; this P40i uses 1,300 W at 9 sheets per pass and adds metal detection. Choose on whether the EPL listing or the detection hardware matters more to you.
