Description

One by five millimetres is the finest paper cut ISO/IEC 21964 recognises: 5 mm² per particle, security level P-7. This P40i does it at nine sheets a pass from a 1,300 W motor, and it does nothing else — HSM lists paper only for this article, with no staples, no clips and no media. That single-purpose focus is the point of a P-7 machine, and it is the discipline it demands of whoever feeds it.

Key Features

  • P-7 at 1 x 5 mm — 5 mm² per particle, the top paper class in ISO/IEC 21964 and DIN 66399.
  • Integrated automatic oiler. On a head this fine, lubrication is what stands between you and a gradual collapse in sheet capacity.
  • 145-litre bin holding roughly 2,667 sheets of shredded material — P-7 waste is close to dust and packs very densely.
  • 1,300 W motor rated by HSM for continuous operation, with no published duty-cycle limit.
  • 330 mm throat, so classified originals do not have to be folded or trimmed before feeding.
  • Automatic start/stop, paper-jam prevention and a safety element across the intake.
  • EcoSmart standby at 0.1 W; approximately 55 dB(A) at idle.
  • Reusable collection insert rather than disposable sacks, which also means no bag change in the middle of a secure destruction session.
  • 580 x 550 mm footprint on castors, small enough to sit inside a secure room rather than in a shared corridor.

What's in the Box

The shredder arrives assembled on its wheeled cabinet with the reusable collection insert already fitted in the 145-litre bin, plus the mains lead and operating manual. Disposable plastic sacks are not included — the P40i bin is built around a reusable corrugated insert, available as a replacement under part HSM1850BOX, which also fits the P36i and the 940 series.

Who Should Buy This — and Who Should Not

This is for a secure area with a narrow, well-defined job: destroying paper that is classified, export-controlled or covered by a contract that names P-7. Nine sheets a pass is not a limitation in that setting, because the volume is small and the standard is absolute.

Do not buy it as a general office shredder. It cannot take staples or paper clips, so every document has to be prepared first; it cannot take cards or discs at all; and HSM's five-year machine warranty and lifetime cutting-roller cover stop at P-5, so this carries three years. If you need P-7 plus optical media destruction, article 1884121N adds metal detection and a 2 x 2 mm OMDD unit. If you need an NSA/CSS EPL listing specifically, the P36i L6 OMDD Combo (1854123S) is the configuration named on the January 2026 list. And if P-5 satisfies your policy, the P40i 1.9 x 15 mm (1882121) more than doubles the throughput and keeps the longer warranty.

One practical point specific to P-7 machines: the waste is extremely fine, so treat emptying as part of the secure process. Empty the bin in the same controlled area where you shred, wear a dust mask, and do not decant the waste into an open sack in a corridor. The machine weighs 72 kg, arrives on a pallet and needs two people at the delivery point, though it rolls freely on castors once in position.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this machine NSA approved?

Not on the basis of anything we can verify. NSA/CSS 02-01 requires both a residue no larger than 1 mm x 5 mm — which this cut meets — and the specific model appearing on the NSA/CSS Evaluated Products List. The January 2026 EPL lists "Securio P40i (L6) Combi" for the P40i, not a plain 1 x 5 mm P40i. If your requirement is contractual, confirm with HSM of America whether article 1884121 is covered by that entry before ordering; a P-7 rating on its own is not an NSA listing.

Can it shred staples and paper clips?

No. HSM lists paper only as the shreddable material for this article, unlike the P-2 to P-6 machines in the same family which explicitly include staples and paper clips. This is not a cautious disclaimer — a 1 x 5 mm cutting head has extremely fine teeth and metal chips them. Documents must be de-stapled before feeding. If you cannot rely on that discipline, article 1884121N adds metal detection as a backstop.

Why only nine sheets per pass?

Because each sheet is being reduced to roughly 12,000 particles in a single transit. Nine sheets at 80 g/m² is HSM's published figure and it is typical for the class; every P-7 shredder trades throughput for particle size. Feed thin, even stacks rather than pushing the limit, and the head will hold its capacity.

How often will the bin need emptying?

Less often than the throughput suggests. The 145-litre bin holds about 2,667 sheets of shredded material at this cut size, the highest figure in the P36i/P40i range, because P-7 particles settle almost like powder. At nine sheets a pass most secure areas empty it monthly. Wear a dust mask when you do — the waste is fine enough to become airborne.

What is the duty cycle before it needs to cool down?

HSM publishes no duty-cycle limit or cool-down period for the P40i and describes the motor as rated for reliable continuous operation. In practice the operator sets the pace, because P-7 feeding is a deliberate, small-batch activity rather than something you do with a full ream in hand.

Does it come with a shorter warranty than the cheaper P40i models?

Yes. HSM gives a five-year machine warranty and a lifetime warranty on the solid steel cutting rollers to SECURIO C, B and P series shredders in security levels P-2 to P-5, and three years to all other SECURIO shredders. P-7 falls outside that band. It is worth pricing five years of cover into any comparison against the P-5 version.

Can I put CDs or credit cards through it?

No. HSM lists paper only for this article. Optical media and payment cards need either the version with the separate OMDD unit (article 1884121N, which takes them to 2 x 2 mm) or a machine with a 4 x 7 mm media unit such as the P40i 1882121C. Forcing a disc through a 1 x 5 mm paper head will damage the cutting rollers.
