Description

Two destruction paths in one cabinet: paper through a 1.9 x 15 mm micro-cut head at P-5, and optical and magnetic media through a separate cutting unit that reduces CDs, DVDs, credit and loyalty cards and floppy disks to 4 x 7 mm particles in their own container. It is the P40i 1882121 with the media problem solved, and it is the highest-security P40i that still holds HSM's five-year warranty.

Key Features

  • Separate 4 x 7 mm media cutting unit with a dedicated waste container, so plastic and aluminium fragments never enter the paper stream.
  • P-5 paper destruction at 1.9 x 15 mm — 28.5 mm² per particle, inside the 30 mm² class ceiling.
  • Five-year machine warranty and lifetime cutting-roller cover, which HSM grants only to P-2 through P-5 shredders.
  • 19–21 sheets per pass at 80 g/m² from the 1,300 W motor.
  • Integrated automatic oiler on the paper head maintains cutting capacity without a manual routine.
  • 145-litre paper bin holding about 1,845 sheets of shredded material.
  • 330 mm throat; EcoSmart standby at 0.1 W; approximately 55 dB(A) at idle.

What's in the Box

The document shredder arrives assembled on its wheeled cabinet with the reusable collection insert fitted in the 145-litre bin, mains lead and manual. The separate media cutting unit is a free-standing unit with its own waste container. Disposable plastic sacks are not supplied; the replacement reusable insert for the main bin is part HSM1850BOX.

Who Should Buy This — and Who Should Not

This is the machine for a site with a single secure destruction point and a mixed inventory: patient files and imaging discs, client files and backup DVDs, HR records and expired access cards. Buying one cabinet that handles both, with the media stream physically separated, is cheaper and easier to audit than running two machines.

Skip the media unit if discs come up twice a year — article 1882121 is the identical shredder, 6 kg lighter and less expensive. Look elsewhere entirely if your paper needs to be finer than P-5: the media unit does not raise the paper class, and for P-7 you want the P40i 1 x 5 mm (1884121) or, with an NSA/CSS EPL listing, the P36i L6 OMDD Combo (1854123S). And if the discs are the sensitive part rather than the paper, note that 4 x 7 mm is O-4 destruction, not the 2 x 2 mm O-6 the OMDD units on the P-6 and P-7 machines produce.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the CD unit here and the OMDD unit on the high-security models?

Particle size and class. This media unit produces 4 x 7 mm particles, rated O-4 for optical media. The OMDD units fitted to the P-6 and P-7 machines in this family (articles 1855121M, 1855121N, 1884121N, 1854123S) produce 2 x 2 mm particles at O-6. If your requirement names an O-level for discs, check it against those figures before ordering.

Does the media unit share the paper bin?

No, and that is deliberate. It has its own small waste container. Keeping shredded polycarbonate and aluminium out of the 145-litre paper bin means the paper waste stays clean enough to recycle, and it also stops hard fragments working their way back toward the paper rollers.

Can I feed several discs at once?

Feed them one at a time. The unit is built for single-disc destruction and stacking them is the quickest way to jam it. The same applies to credit and loyalty cards. It is a short job either way — a disc takes a couple of seconds.

Is P-5 with a 4 x 7 mm media unit enough for GDPR-type obligations?

For paper containing personal data, P-5 exceeds the P-4 benchmark most privacy programmes use, so yes in the ordinary case. For discs, 4 x 7 mm particles are not recoverable by any practical means. What it does not do is satisfy a specification that explicitly names P-6, P-7 or NSA/CSS 02-01 — those are different requirements and this machine does not meet them.

How much heavier is it than the plain 1882121?

78 kg against 72 kg. Both roll on castors once positioned, but at 78 kg it needs two people to move over a threshold or into a lift, and it is worth flagging to whoever accepts the delivery so they bring the right help.

Will it destroy a hard drive?

No. Neither the paper head nor the 4 x 7 mm media unit is built for a 2.5 in or 3.5 in drive, an SSD or a tape cartridge. Attempting one will damage the machine. Hard drives need a dedicated hard drive shredder or a degausser, and the NSA maintains separate Evaluated Products Lists for those categories.
